Sabrina is joined today by Dr. Ramani, a clinical psychologist, who describes narcissism as a maladaptive personality style rooted in low empathy, appearance focus, and a need for admiration, with insecurity and shame at its core. Children of narcissistic parents often experience guilt, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Sabrina speaks to her personal experiences with a narcissistic parent. Dr. Ramani dives into the nuanced topic of knowing when to walk away as an adult child which involves setting boundaries, understanding the individual’s journey, and prioritizing therapy. Co-parenting with a narcissist presents immense challenges, requiring prioritization of children's well-being and seeking professional support. Overall, the impact of narcissistic behavior on familial relationships and psychological well-being necessitates understanding, boundary setting, and therapeutic intervention. Sabrina talks with guest Anna Przy about the mental health journey that led to her current ventures. Addressing mental health needs can be a complex process, and the journey is not always straightforward, which can make it unappealing to some. In their conversation, Sabrina and Anna discuss the transition from treating mental wellness as a taboo subject to being open to receiving help and sharing the wisdom behind accepting help. Both emphasize how shame around seeking help causes breakdown before realizing "I'm not okay." Anna shares how finding love and marriage not long after pursuing her mental health journey changed her perception of living life for herself, but also loving living her life with her husband. Accepting the possibility of growing apart from people during your mental health journey is crucial. It is a testament to becoming secure after healing. Prioritizing mental health enables setting boundaries to overcome setbacks like imposter syndrome, anxiety, and burnout from the expectation of constant productivity. How do you know you are ready for a relationship? Sabrina explores that difficult question because so much gets lost in the weeds for people. Being ready means accepting rejection in dating, but that's ok because you aren't for everyone. Once you delve into the layers that make you, you, it will be clear what you want and need in a partner. You can recognize that living a fulfilling life is with your partner and independent of your partner. The healing will pave the way to entering a secure relationship because of your self-security. Sabrina explores the ins and outs of the healing journey with Masha, which revolves around nervous system regulation and self-trust development. Nervous system dysregulation goes hand in hand with how we view ourselves and our perception of reality. How can we validate our feelings despite dysregulation and our distorted perception of reality and decide on the best decision? Masha delves into how “trusting yourself” starts with trusting your emotions, holding space for processing your emotions, and then paving the way to decide. The decision may not be the best down the road (is there ever a definite and immediate way to know?), but as long as it honors what you were feeling at the moment and you accept the consequences down the road. Sabrina sits down with Mark Groves and his partner, Kylie McBeath, for a conversation on their dating journey, which leads them from breaking up to finding each other again years later. When they first parted ways, they were confronted with the logic behind why it had to end and what they each had to work on. After their closing ceremony, a collective decision to end the relationship with a series of questions and reflections, they each worked on addressing their codependencies and why their relationship was not serving them as individuals. Healing involved figuring out what Kylie began with sourcing from men or a relationship with Mark. They both reflect on the series of tools such as somatic therapy, financial competence, and creating a safe space for feeling a range of emotions as individuals and liberation that brought them back to one another. On this weeks episode of Do the Work podcast, Sabrina opens up about her personal journey in the dating world, transitioning from repeatedly choosing toxic relationships to healthy ones. The first step is to recognize our own toxic behaviors, such as ignoring red flags. Ultimately, a healthy relationship requires two emotionally available and secure individuals. By practicing radical self-acceptance, we remain true to ourselves and are honest about our desires and what we bring to the relationship. Sabrina's current relationship has taught her that cultivating healthy communication and reflecting on past mistakes is crucial for contributing to a secure and healthy relationship. *TRIGGER WARNING! We do discuss eating disorders in this episode. On this weeks episode of Do the Work podcast, Sabrina is joined by her big sister Jaimie Bailey for a heart-to-heart talk on trauma and its manifestation in her relationship with food. Jaimie is a holistic nutritionist passionate about wellness and a healthy relationship with food and diet and she has her own indoor cycling studio in San Diego called Grindhouse Cycle.  Jaimie talks about how trauma initially manifested itself with her and her fixation on tiny details about herself. Her older brother's addictions began to influence her choices and her addiction to the high. Her household environment was hostile and lacked joy, so her feeling of joy was tied to substances. It also led to the avoidant attachment style because of coping alone and the lack of trust in others to protect her.  Jaimie shares her experiences with body shape changes in high school and while living in New York. She lost weight through healthy lifestyle changes, but her home environment led to her experiencing body dysmorphia. Jaimie realizes that her relationship with food has been influenced by her need to be numb and avoid addressing her unresolved inner child issues.  Her now partner, Ashton, supported her during her relapses of indulging in food over the years. Her discovery of a holistic nutrition program introduced a new way of looking at food as a source of anxiety. Jaimie reflects on how working with her clients is like turning pain into purpose, yet she sometimes feels like an imposter because of shame. The susceptibility to relapse is there; she had to figure out how to make peace with it all daily.  However, at the end of the day, her radical acceptance of her addictions helps her to be fully present for her clients. Her current approach to food is to consider all the factors that affect her relationship with it and whether each meal will provide her with the necessary energy. The first step in dealing with a problem like binge eating is understanding why it is happening. Once you have this understanding, you can decide to rise above it and prevent it from happening again.   Check out Grindhouse cycle in Encinitas CA and take Jaimies class HERE!
