She Can Make - Episode 3 Show Notes   Welcome to She Can Make - A podcast making Canadian content, one stitch at a time. We’re your hosts, Kate and Lindsey. Today’s segments include: In the workroom Alterations Skills Lab A Review or Two Crafting with Kids And from the Mail Bag In the Workroom: Some of Kate’s knitting and spinning has been put on hold this week to get in some much-needed cycling time. Kate is getting ready for the Kawartha Lakes Classic Cycling Tour.  She is plugging along on the Jayla shawl by Tammy Gore that she talked about last time, and is about ⅓ of the way through the first panel, very vanilla garter stitch initially, which is helping her fit knitting in when she's tired or distracted. She has also booked the hotel and classes for her visit with her mom to the Woodstock Fleece Festival in October. They're going to take an natural indigo dying class. Lindsey is still not fully unpacked, but has decided that it’s time to get sewing.  She’s working on a favourite shirt pattern to get her started.  McCalls M7191. She has decided to try one with back yoke and flowing lace. Alterations: Kate discusses the complications of dealing with husky hair when knitting and spinning.  She offers a couple of solutions, and hints that Lindsey’s sewing skills might be able to help her out. Lindsey discusses how her sewing room set up isn’t going as planned.  She discusses what went wrong and why, and talks about how she’s actually happier with the outcome so far. Skills Lab: Kate gives a great explanation of the differences between woolen and worsted yarns, including why they are different and the best ways to use them. A Review or Two:   Lindsey reviews Crochet Magazine: Autumn 2017 issue, available until October 2nd, 2017 from Chapters / Indigo for $8.  Crafting with Kids: The adventures with Miss O continue.  Lindsey discusses the pros and cons of the felting machine (Sew Cool), and what she felt Miss O learned, and did not learn from the experience.     From the Mail Bag: Does anyone ever buy anything from Joann’s / Michael’s at full price? She Can Make Episode 2 - Show Notes Welcome to She Can Make - A podcast making Canadian content, one stitch at a time. Today’s segments include: In the workroom Alterations  Live from the Skills Lab  A Review  Crafting with Kids From the male bag In the Workroom Lindsey is working on a storage bag for her garlic and onions fresh from the farm using Loops & Thread Jeany Denim. The girls will get a pattern put together when Lindsey finishes her project. Kate is doing a lot of spinning, as her Tour de Fleece mojo arrived about two weeks too late. She's spun about 15 oz of fiber in the last week and put some serious miles on the treadle. Alterations Lindsey alters a banana bread recipe to make it a little healthier.  Kate rips back a Taine shawl by Melanie Berg she had been working on in favour of the Jayla shawl by Tammy Gore. She is using Shelridge Yarn for both the shawl she ripped out and the shawl she is working on now.  Kate mentions Yarn Over Sleep Over, which is knitting camp for grown-ups. You should totally go.  Live from the Skills Lab Kate talks about how to make the most of a Ravelry search and refers to a Ravelry Blog post from August 3, 2017.  A Review or Two The girls compare and contrast their very different sets of interchangeable circular needles. Lindsey's are the Needle Master Interchangeable Needle System by Boye and Kate has Addi Click Turbo Interchangeable Circular Needles. They have very strong opinions about both sets, and the results are a little surprising.  Crafting with Kids Lindsey is helping Miss O with a simple skirt to help get her started on her Janome Derby machine. They have negotiated the design, and are waiting for the right moment to get started. Lindsey talks about expected challenges when sewing with a kid as young as Miss O. From the Mail Bag A new segment in which craft-adjacent partners and friends can submit their questions about why exactly crafty things are the way they are.  This week's question is about pinking shears.
She Can Make Episode 1 - Show Notes Welcome to She Can Make - A podcast making Canadian content, one stitch at a time. Today’s segments include: -Introductions to Kate & Lindsey -How we ended up podcasting -in the workroom -Alterations  -Live from the Skills Lab  -A Review  -Crafting with Kids About Kate: Kate is a 30-something year old knitter and spinner, originally hailing from Fenelon Falls, Ontario, now settled in Oshawa and celebrating her first year of home ownership. By day she's your friendly neighbourhood insurance broker, and most evenings Kate can be found behind my spinning wheel, drop spindle or knitting up a storm. She pretends to be a cyclist and spends a lot of time hanging out with her husky, Miss Finnegans.  About Lindsey:  Lindsey is married with a 3.5 year old daughter.  She is originally from small town, and have recently moved back after 15 years in Toronto. Most of her craft time is spent sewing or knitting, but she also enjoys crochet, scrapbooking, colouring, and cooking and baking.  When not crafting or chasing Miss O, she loves roller derby and board gaming. So, How Did We End Up Podcasting? Kate texted Lindsey in the middle of the day about a month ago and asked her what she thought about putting together a podcast. Lindsey was in the middle of a move and unpacking.  She thought Kate was completely crazy, but the more Kate bugged her about it and the more she gave it some thought, the more she thought it sounded like fun. In the Workroom: We’ve spent a few weeks working out the kinks and the whats and hows of how to put a podcast together and get it out to listeners, so fingers crossed this all goes smoothly, but we hope that you’ll be patient with us while we work out the kinks. Outside of podcast prep, Kate has found out recently that there are some new babies coming in late fall in her family. She has spent a lot of time knitting tiny baby sweaters. Recently She finished the Pomander Baby Cardigan by Whistling Girl Knits, the bouncing baby bonnet from Homespun Handknits.  These were both knit out of Fleece Artist Cottage Sock in the Moss colourway, which is a tonal lime and frog green. They don’t know what flavour of babies the families are expecting, so Kate is trying to keep things neutral, especially because both babies will be first babies to their respective families, so neutral knits have a better chance of being shared sibling to sibling. She's hoping to start the Alaskan Baby Pullover by Ainur Berkimbayeva as part of her August Knit Along. Lindsey has mostly been unpacking after the move and has had much less crafting time than she had hoped.  Alterations: Moving as a crafter presents some unique challenges because there are too many boxes, including 33 boxes of board games. The movers weren't happy about this. The girls have strict moving policies about craft supplies, you don't touch their stuff. Craft boxes are first packed and last unpacked which puts crafting on hold. Lindsey would never unpack and would just furiously sew new clothes, but since that just isn't reasonable, she is madly unpacking and starting to think of new projects finally When working on the Pomander baby cardigan, Kate had a hard time with the pattern. The way pattern was laid out and written made it hard to process the information. Kate found that the conversational style of the pattern really doesn’t work for her brain, and more than once she missed a major step. One of them was bad enough that she had to ask her mom to rescue her. She had knit the body and had come to the place where you were casting on additional stitches for the sleeves, and she just cast them on and continued on her merry way, and then realized when she had knit the yoke and done the trim, that there was one small problem … She didn't have live stitches to pick up for the sleeves. She couldn’t think about how to fix this without creating an obvious seam, and so she went back and checked the pattern, sure enough, a few lines away from the actual cast on instructions it says “provisional”   Funny how one word can changes so much.  Because the cable starts directly after the cast-on row, Kate just wasn’t confident enough in her ability to not lose 20 stitches for each sleeve, so she gave it to her mom and let her spend an entire Saturday night snipping and unpicking the cast on edge and picking up the live stitches as she went. Once that was done it was smooth sailing, but it almost landed the sweater in time out! Live from the Skills Lab Lindsey talks about colouring as a test run for colour design when she is working on sewing or knitting projects. She likes to colour to test out colour schemes before sewing, knitting or working on a project. This lets you really love or hate colours or decide ideal colour ratio, swap colours in and out. She often uses stickers.  It helps her limit waste and she can take the coloured sticker when she goes fabric shopping. Kate heard about a great app you could try while she was listening to the Knitmore Girls Podcast, called ProCreate. It lets you create a basic outline of what you want to create and make that 1 layer, then create a new layer on top to do your colouring or design work, and when you erase it it leaves the first layer alone. A Review or Two Lindsey reviewed Bobbin Mates by Unique Creativ and found that they were a small but smart tool that removes a pain point from her sewing projects. She probably won't switch entirely from her bobbin box today, but as she buys new threads she hopes to replace them one by one.  Crafting with Kids At 9 months old Miss O would stand and dance at the sewing machine, and by the time she could talk and toddle around she had costume and clothing requests and more recently she wanted to sew. Lindsey got her a basic kids “sewing” machine on sale after Christmas one year. It didn’t actually sew, but felted the pieces together. She was able to use it by herself and found it was a great introduction to sewing independently.  She has recently bought a Janome Derby sewing machine to start O off with a great quality kid's sized machine. Kate and Lindsey are both terribly jealous of how cool this machine is.  If you have questions, comments or feedback you can join our ravelry, instagram or facebook at She Can Make Podcast or email us at shecanmakepodcast@gmail.com Thanks for listening and talk to you next week!
