In a remote location north of the Bay Area we didnt so much escape reality as re-create it. The landscape — the fog, the tall trees, the fields dotted with craters and other land art — was a canvas that we played with projecting onto. For two weeks (the length of our residency) we got to live inside of our own imaginations. (Whose imagination are we living in normally? What are we subtly taught to fear? To worship?) In our utopic visions art and queers and femmes have power. Our utopia is creative and collaborative and fun. On the sun porch, we listened to BUFU — our interviews with Kat, Jazmine, Tsige, and Sonia last summer — and heard more signs of utopic scheming & also signs of emergence, the theory of political organizing popularized by the writer and activist adrienne maree brown. Actually, it was BUFU who first told us about Emergent Strategy, when we were just starting to make our own forays into collective organizing and programming. adrienne says imagination is a battle. WHITE DRAG

WHITE DRAG

2017-11-1618:43

Spring 2017: NK went to a panel at the California African-American Museum in Los Angeles. The dancer Taisha Pagget was in conversation with the curator Erin Christovale, and Taisha told Erin how her ballet training had institutionalized the natural rhythm out of her. Which made NK think about her own experiences in a graduate writing program — how her writing developed a double consciousness, and how she started going to parties in a cheap blonde wig and hot pink lipstick, a costume which she eventually called WHITE DRAG. This is her experience of literary passing. Original writing by Nicole Kelly. Produced by Elyssa Dudley. Bitchface is written, hosted, recorded, and produced by Nicole Kelly & Phoebe Unter.
"Make love. Anything can be sex. The body is rich and varied in its parts and sensations. So many ecstasies have yet to be felt. Get away from the genital organisation of ‘sexuality.’" The rules: everything is negotiable domination is care ask for what you want get a yes be honest This is how we learned to get uncomfortably close. VULNERABILITY is part 3 of a three part series on our search for solidarity and intimacy. Tate Ashley is a Cuddle Domme based in LA & NYC. "Libidinal flows cut through the social world.” Desire, sensuality, romance, sex — they dont exist in a vacuum, somehow free from the politics that dictate our public lives. "Desire flows and circulates amongst places of employment, intellectual debates, political organizing, artistic circles, playgrounds, and cemeteries.” Post-couple form, we began to look elsewhere for connection. In this episode we’re guided by our burning questions: Can touching your friends be sensual, without being sexual? Can friendships be fluid — romantic one day, and not the next? What is the boundary between friendship and romance? Is there a boundary at all? INTIMACY is part 2 of a three part series on our search for solidarity and intimacy. Against the Couple Form # 1: LOVE "The couple functions as the threshold, the admission fee, the golden key that allows a woman to participate in the social world. The couple grants a woman personhood and social visibility. She obtains a title, a temporality, a space through the couple. Marriage enshrines this logic…” In this episode, fluid friends Taylor & Alys explain why their most important relationship is the one they have with each other. LOVE is part 1 of a three part series on our search for solidarity and intimacy. This episode includes excerpts from “Against the Couple Form” by Clemence X. The Female Gaze

The Female Gaze

2016-12-0129:54

MALE FANTASIES, MALE FANTASIES is everything run by male fantasies? If you believe Margaret Atwood the male gaze is inescapable. If a man isn’t looking at you (but tbh when is he not?) then you are your own voyeur, always seeing yourself as male culture (“entertainment”) has taught you to -- whether you know it or not. “Protagonism is propaganda that protects and perpetuates privilege,” Jill Soloway announced at TIFF this fall. Gina Young put it another way: “The people with all the power control the stories that get told.” And the stories they’re telling are often narratives that reduce women to objects and false dichotomies, narratives that are designed to teach us how to behave, how to be in service of a male agenda, how to be. This episode is about taking control of the ways we’re seen -- the ways we’re looked at, in what context, on whose terms, and for what purposes. This episode is about two women and two ideas in conversation: What would media look like if we told our own stories? And how could those stories give us permission to really be ourselves? THE FEMALE GAZE is how we see the world, ourselves, & each other. In this episode WE DISSECT DIRECTOR JILL SOLOWAY’S MASTER CLASS: Jill Soloway perfectly articulates our rage, suggestions for what cis-males should do in the feminist utopia, and why Zack Morris is the epitome of white dude fragility. WE VISIT GINA YOUNG’S FEMINIST ACTING CLASS: The tragedies of Hollywood typecasting, queer casting calls and feminist sororities, and how to maintain your sanity when your body is a commodity. This episode features music by DEATH VALLEY GIRLS and INTI WAWA. Hosting by NICOLE KELLY & PHOEBE ÜNTER. Produced by Phoebe and mastered by audiobruja ELYSSA DUDLEY. 1. "A man on the road is solitary," the writer Vanessa Veselka said. "A woman on the road is just alone." Veselka thumbed rides for three years as a teenager & never once saw another girl hitching. We've got wanderlust too, and we don't need company. But like Veselka, we could think of a lot of stories about men on the road alone and not so many tales about women traveling solo. (If there's one thing this patriarchal society hates, it's a woman with agency doing whatever the F she wants.) So we hitchhiked to Vegas in protest of that tradition. WE OUT HERE. Produced by Elyssa Dudley.
obviously we love a costume party cause it's cool to be someone else for a minute. plus wearing a disguise is liberating & fun. but there are times when the masks we wear aren't necessarily by choice. when we aren't seen, or aren't allowed to be authentic, inhabiting your second self can feel more like a burden. this episode is about both of those experiences -- the alter egos we choose and the ones imposed upon us. Music Credits: “Favorite Secrets” by Waylon Thorton “Sgt Frog” by Blank & Kytt “Rock” by Blank & Kytt “The Time To Run (Finale)” by Dexter Britain “catch a wave” by Duke Hugh “Another Version of You” by Chris Zabriskie “Ball Drop” by Ryan Little “Biscuits” by Lambent “Passive Aggressive Feminism” by Jazz Bras Dot Com Produced by Elyssa Dudley.
Feminism has always had a cyclical momentum, both in the broader movement and in our personal lives. And so this episode is about how we revolt, and also how we revolve, how we change and transform, the ways we rotate and orbit around the same feelings, or how we get over it, evolve, & move on. This episode features ++ writer & illustrator Yumi Sakugawa reading “7 Rituals From the Feminist Utopia: Prebirth to Postdeath,” from The Feminist Utopia Project ++ Kelsey Nolan reading her essay about breaking up & moving on in a piece called “His & Hers” ++ "Sad Sax Song" by Leah Menzer, the realest break up song of 2016 ++ AND MORE! Produced and scored by Elyssa Dudley.
