The Lord Jesus Christ is a man of prayer. He was committed to prayer during His lifein the flesh. Scripture attests to the fact that He is still interceding for His church tilldate. Talking about Christ’ prayer life, S. D. Gordon said: “The man Christ Jesus prayed;prayed much; needed to pray; loved to pray.”In his bid to teach his disciples “to pray,” Christ provided them with the prayer model inLk. 11:1ff.A good understanding of the principles taught in this passage would no doubt helpeveryone who desires to grow in his/her prayer life.Meanwhile, apart from learning the principles of prayer from this model prayer, wecan also deduce principal reasons why we should pray. Some of the reasons are:1. To Strengthen our Relationship with our Heavenly Father - V.9.God is the Creator of all mankind. He is however not the Father of all humanbeings.God is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is also the Father to all who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord andSaviour - Jn. 1:12; 2 Tim. 2:19.The word “Father” means source. Ancestor and inventor.Prayer gives us the opportunity of daily and constantly connecting with ourSource. This explains why you experience spiritual dryness when you are not consistentwith your prayer life.2. For the Establishment of God’s Kingdom - V.10.Satan the thief is regarded in scripture as the god of this world. Till date, he holdssway over people’s lives and communities. For us to dislodge him out of people’slives and communities, we must be committed to concerted prayers. You can bring down the kingdom of God in your compound, street, office, school, village, nation by your prayer.Bringing down the kingdom of God is another critical reason why we must be menand women of prayer.3. To Operate in the will of God - V.10.Being at the center of God’s will is sweet and fulfilling.Prayer is essential to knowing and doing the will of God.Many of our young people are going through time of crisis today in the choice oflife partner, career, etc just because of prayerlessness. Prayer will help youdiscern God’s will for your life and also help you submit to that will.4. To Receive our Daily Provisions - V.11The Almighty God is our El-Shaddai. He is more than enough. As a responsible and reliable Father, He is committed to providing for our needson a daily basis. Prayer gives us the access to receiving His daily provision for ourlives.5. To Receive Forgiveness for our Sins - V.12.Man’s greatest problem is sin. Jesus came to save us from our sins. He paid the full pricefor our sins past, present and the future. While Christians don’t sin deliberately, we dofall into it once in a while. God has made provision through prayer for us to receive Hisforgiveness through confession and repentance.6. To Offer Forgiveness to those who have Offended us - V.12, 14-15.The condition for us to receive forgiveness of our sins is that we all must forgivethose who have offended us. Failure to do so would make the heavens to beclosed to us. It also means we are sitting in the place of God - Gen. 50:19.God expects us to forgive people who have offended us regardless of the gravity oftheir sins. Prayer offers us the opportunity of forgiving all who have hurt us. Lk.11:24-25.7. To Shield us from Temptation - V.13; Matt. 26:41-41.Believers are faced with temptations everyday. Part of Satan’s daily schedule is toset traps for God’s people - Jn. 10:10b. Living a prayerful life helps to shield usfrom the many temptations that come our way on a daily basis - Lk.22:31-32, 39.8. To Secure Victory over the evil one - V.8.Christ has made us over-comers through His finished work on the cross - 1Jn.5:4;Rev. 12:11. We are truly m

Discipleship Conference 2019Day 2, Session 1Driven By God's Agenda
Sermon preached on the 28th Of January 2024
One of the visions that our forefathers in IBC had from our church’s earliest beginning was a congregation that would be Jesus’ light bearers and light givers. This is reflected in some of our old bulletins that show a hand holding a torch, with a caption at the top of the cover page that reads: “The LIGHT of the world is JESUS, Come to the LIGHT at IKOYI BAPTIST CHURCH.” We, however, neither have a record of how they came about this revelation nor the particular scripture that can be referred to as their bearing. The recent past and present generation took this matter further by adopting a logo with light. It is now a standard practice that all IBC daughter churches bear names that have light as either a prefix or suffix. While we celebrate the efforts, labors and the grace of God on our forefathers, necessity is however laid on the present generation of IBC Pastors and members to complete what they started. This include: knowing God’s mind as regards the scripture that conveys God’s purpose for our local church; re-writing or re-phrasing the present purpose statement; adopting a Membership Orientation Program Booklet/Covenant; re-shuffling and re-arranging the existing Purpose Driven Ministries’ portfolios for greater effectiveness; and any other thing that the Lord would lead us to do in this season. The foregoing requires that we all be open to the Holy Spirit and make positive contributions to this process. It is my earnest prayer that the Lord would help us to get it right and thereby lay a solid foundation for a glorious future for our local church. A. Read the following passages and mention what is common to them-  Isa. 60:1-3;  Matt. 5:14-15; Jn. 8:12; 12:35; Eph.5:8; 1 Jn. 1:5. B. What do you observe from the following passages? - 1 Jn. 1:5; Jn.8:12; 9:5;     Matt. 5:14. C. What do light and darkness symbolize in scripture?  D. What do you understand by the “image of God” from Gen. 1:26-27. E. Mention the characteristics of light from the following passages? Matt. 5:14-    16;  Jn. 1:5; 5:35; Eph.5:13; 2 Pet. 1:19; Isa. 60:3: 1 Jn. 1:5; F. What is the immediate context to Matt.5:14-15? G. What are we meant to be and to do from Matt. 5:14-15? H. Evaluate the current IBC Purpose Statement in the light of Matt. 5:14-15. Do      you agree we need to  redraft this Purpose Statement? Why? I.  Assignment: To see a group that will give us a Purpose Statement that is     Biblical, short and memorizable without compromising on the five purposes of     the church. The desire to become a Purpose Driven Church is no doubt a laudable but challenging one. It requires diligence reading and study of God’s word, prayerful dependence, setting aside personal interests for the interest of Christ, collective understanding and ownership, and a high level of humility. May the Lord help us to pay the required price and fulfill God’s expectation over us as a local church.

WHEN THE CHURCH PRAYS

WHEN THE CHURCH PRAYS

2024-03-1701:27:17

Prayer remains one of the highly potent weapons Christ has given to the church to advance His purpose on earth.  Prayer makes the church strong, formidable and impregnable. There is no wisdom, no insight or knowledge that can succeed against a praying church. It is only a prayer-less church that is a weak, beggarly and at the mercy of the enemy.  It is my prayer that the house of IBC shall truly be a house of prayer, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.Click Here To Read More
It is important to underscore that the advancement the Lord is promising us has a destination. It is not without a focus. It is not directionless. It is a purposeful advancement.Click Here to Read More
Prayer remains an indispensable means to walking with God. The main business of the House of God - the church - is prayer. A local church that fails to be a House of Prayer will end up being a den of thieves. There is no in-between. You just have to be one.One of the ways by which Satan is killing local churches today is through prayerlessness. This church, (our local church- IBC) by all means and by the grace of God must be a House of Prayer. Anything short of that is not acceptable with the owner of the House. Click Here to Read More
