Description

Campfires were the watering hole for the outdoorsmen for as long as we have pursued the outdoors. Whether hunting or fishing, outdoorsmen would gather around a fire to share wisdom, experiences, food, and shelter. The legend and lore of American Icons like Danielle Boone, Mr. Fox, and Will Primos were born around campfires. In the modern era legendary camps like Kings Ranch, Shumulla, and Cottonmouth provided readers with a steady stream of stories written by outdoor writers who experienced legendary adventures. We believe that the outdoors community is at its best when the spirit of Hunt Camp thrives and we aim to restore that in a world that feels largely divided and Hunt Camp lost to the times.

The Southern Collective is composed of consummate outdoorsmen who’s roots stretch across the Deep South and believe in Hunt Camp. We are bringing it back by hosting hunting camps across the South, creating relatable content to the southern outdoorsman, and by creating a Digital Hunt Camp for those times when we can’t be in the great outdoors.

You are the Southern Collective. Welcome to the fire.

This week we're talking with author & content creator Hunter Farrior of Spring Legion. Hunter has authored books like "Ballad Of A Turkey Hunter" and "Any Given Spring Morning", capturing what he believes to be a "Higher standard" of turkey hunting. In this episode, Walter Lee and Travis Thompson discuss the need for community in the outdoor space and the creation of Florida Fridays. They explore the unique challenges of hunting in Florida and how the skills honed in the state can translate to other states. They emphasize the role of apathy in conservation and the need for collective action and representation. It emphasizes the importance of strategic conservation efforts and the need for sportsmen and women to align behind organizations that fight for the preservation of the state. It concludes with a discussion on the importance of the right to fish and hunt and the upcoming ballot initiative in Florida. Takeaways Florida is a unique paradise for outdoorsmen, with abundant hunting and fishing opportunities throughout the year. The skills honed in Florida can translate to other states, but the reverse is often not true due to the different environment and challenges. The hunting and fishing industry should focus on creating a community and fostering mentorship to ensure the long-term sustainability of the sport. Apathy and a focus on the kill rather than the experience can hinder conservation efforts and the growth of hunting and fishing. Increased engagement, representation, and funding are necessary to address the challenges and preserve the sportsman paradise in Florida. A vocal minority can have a significant impact on driving change. There is a disconnect between land managers and hunters, with some land managers not fully understanding or participating in hunting and fishing activities. Increasing access and opportunity for hunting and fishing can have positive ripple effects on wildlife management and conservation. Telling a compelling conservation story is crucial for engaging and connecting with people. Public-private partnerships can provide opportunities for increased access to hunting and fishing. Connecting people to the way of life in Florida and the importance of hunting and fishing is crucial for conservation efforts. Unmanaged growth and urban sprawl pose significant challenges to conservation efforts. Advocacy and funding are crucial in conservation efforts.
