Illness has always been a part of human history, and mermaid legends have long played a part in offering protection from disease or foretold plagues and catastrophes.  Professor Sarah Peverley returns to share stories of how mermaid cures have helped people through past epidemics. In the 19th century, people drew the Japanese Amabie mermaids as protection against disease, and that practice has been resurrected on social media during #coronavirus. From legends about the healing properties of mermaid bones to mermaids who prescribe mugwort for tuberculosis, mermaids continue to offer hope in uncertain times.  Important Links Mermaids Through The Ages: http://www.cinderly.com/posts/s2-e2-mermaids-history-sarah-peverley/ Amabie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amabie Amabie hashtag on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/amabie/ Mermaid Map In Oxford: https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/18100860631005684/  Find Sarah Peverley at sarahpeverley.com Get your Mermaid Merch!  Get 15% off on official Mermaid Podcast merchandise. It’s the 30th anniversary of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. With several adaptations in the works, it’s a great time to talk about the history of The Little Mermaid. Sacha Coward is mermaid folklorist and freelance museum professional who has worked at local, national, and international museums and galleries..and also designs escape  rooms! Host Laura von Holt asked Sacha to tell her everything he knows about The Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Andersen, queer history, mermaids around the world and what mermaids mean today. They also managed to touch on RuPaul’s Drag Race and the Twilight movies. Warning: There’s a teensy bit of strong language.  You can follow Sacha Coward on Twitter at @sacha_coward.
