Welcome to BATMANLAND, a frank, honest discussion of the 1960s Batman TV show. This week we look at an episode that looks at the subject of feminism through what can only politely be referred to as a 1968 lens and fails badly at it. Dan and Nick try to get a handle on what the show thought it was doing. They then go on to discuss a much better episode showing the return of (and final appearance of) The Penguin.
As we close in on the final episodes of Batman, we are also saying goodbye to some of our favourite characters - like with this week as we see the final episode to feature Catwoman. Eartha Kitt as Catwoman has been fascinating from a 2018 perspective as we see how the treatment of the Catwoman character has changed with the recasting of the role with the African American actress. 1968 wasn't as progressive as we might have liked to have seen, here at BATMANLAND. Also this week, the return of Milton Berle as Louie The Lilac.
Look kids, BATMANLAND is all about context and working through the complicated cultural mire that was the 1966 Batman TV show. The show was weird - for example this week we are seeing an episode that was written to be the 2nd episode of a 3-part storyline, but reconstructed to work as an individual episode. So, Dan and Nick try to explain how they did this... and along the way get distracted by talking about The Odd Couple, Simon & Garfunkel, and more. They also discuss part one of a Joker/Catwoman team-up and try to bring some sense to it all.
It's another purr-fect outing for Batman and Robin this week with the two wrapping up in merry old Londonium fighting the mother from Mary Poppins before returning to Gotham for Eartha Kitt's debut as Catwoman. On BATMANLAND, Dan and Nick do their gosh-darn best analytical work in breaking down this week's thrilling chapters in the ongoing story of a wealthy billionaire who enjoys the feeling of wearing tights.
Cor blimey, Governor! Batman and Robin have left Gotham for merry olde England, or more specifically, the city of Londinium. They're a reverse British Invasion where they discover just how different life is across the pond - people drive on the other side of the road and they're all obsessed with fog. This week on BATMANLAND, Dan and Nick explore this brave new world the Caped Crusaders find them in. Little does he realise who he has really kidnapped. And Batman & Robin? She barely even needs them in this episode because she's THAT GOOD!
The villainous scourge of ducted heating Mister Freeze is back in Gotham with help from renowned ice skating 'legend' Glacia Glaze. He issues an ultimatum that he will begin freezing the entire country if his demands are not met. The cad. Discussing these episodes are Dan and Nick, joined by comic book reviewer Chris Neill.
When the Joker launches art classes, Batman and Robin find themselves entering the seedy world of modern art. On BATMANLAND, Dan and guest co-host Andrew Mercado explore the episode at depth, discussing Cesar Romero's moustache, inspirations for the 1989 Batman film, and disappointing Batman casting.
Gotham's most fearsome villain The Black Widow strikes, robbing the city's banks in alphabetical order. Catwoman turns her life around. Out on parole, she enrols at Gotham University and riles up the students. Just a few days into her undergrad degree and she's staging protest rally's and staging pranks from a sorority house. On BATMANLAND this week, Dan, Nick, and Haidee don their togas to discuss this animal house.
