Before Minus One got all the love and admiration it so rightfully deserved, there was another Godzilla movie not so long ago that really stomped its way into the hearts of millions. A film with some pretty great locations, art direction, and set dressing, which is honestly amazing considering all the scenery chewing going on in this movie. But a myriad of strange decisions like brainwashing the two best characters of the franchise into mindless zombies, casting a white dude to portray the Japanese God of Thunder, and tossing out "flawless victory’s” with total abandon make this a very sloppy movie at best and an absolute disaster at worst. Oh yeah, we're doing it. And honestly, it took way too long for us to finally discuss this one, let alone anime in general. Grave of the Fireflies was only the third Studio Ghibli movie when it debuted in 1988, but it was just as powerful and evocative then as it still is today. So much so that a lot of people can only bring themselves to watch it once - but not us. A beautiful tragedy enveloped by incredible imagery, fantastic performances, and a deft hand in direction, Fireflies is well deserving of its perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. Like many others, Gareth Evans's The Raid was a gateway for us into the incredible world of Indonesian action films. For what used to feel like a bygone era, these movies simultaneously conjure up nostalgia for '70s and '80s kung fu films while also transcending the genre entirely, and Timo Tjahjanto's The Night Comes for Us pushes what we thought those movies could be to the absolute extreme. There's never been a Palme d'Or given to not only the director but also the two leads of a film before 2013's Blue is the Warmest Colour, but there's rarely been a movie with as much power behind it like this one. Over the past decade, several articles detailing a mired production and testimonies of the troubling circumstances surrounding Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux's experiences making the movie seemed to have cast this one into a dark light, but there's so much good in this film that deserves to be celebrated - and we're here to do just that.
