Like for real? Well it's true. I've mentioned it a few times, but on this epsiode, I share a bit more about what I am doing in my Doctor of Ministry program along with my academic journey. It is application season here in the US and I also share my thoughts on college and how to choose. As someone who has a ton of college debt, I am a big fan of going where the money is. Additionally, I am a fan of applying to HBCUs, epscially now more than ever. With SCOUTS striking down affrimative action, we have to be stratgeic with our academic plans. What's happening between Israel and Palestine is a lot. This "conflict" (i.e. apartheid and terrorism) has historical roots that expand beyond recent news. Social media has blown the story up in ways that appear to be one-sided. Some are feeling lost in the sauce on the subject and are searching for the right words to say. Beloved, it's ok if you don't have the words. In this episode, I make an attempt to share some context to what is happening and what we can do when we don't know what to do or say. For the practical parts of this conversation, tune into the audio. Now, to understand "how we even got here," it is important to note that the following statements are a rough overview. The Palestinian-Israeli "conflict" is a long-standing political and territorial dispute between Israelis and Palestinians, primarily over the area known today as Israel and the Palestinian territories (West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem). The roots of the conflict are deep and involve historical, political, and religious factors. Here's a bit of historical background to bring folks up to speed:Ancient History: The region, historically known as Canaan, then later as Judea and Israel, has been inhabited by various groups over millennia. The ancient Israelites established the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah there. Over time, the area witnessed multiple invasions and rulers, including the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and many more.Islamic Rule: In the 7th century AD, Muslim Arab armies conquered the region, and it became part of various Islamic caliphates for over a millennium.Ottoman Rule: By the early 16th century, the Ottoman Empire took control, which lasted until World War I.British Mandate: After World War I, the League of Nations granted Britain the mandate to govern the region. During this period, the Zionist movement, which sought a homeland for Jews in response to centuries of persecution in Europe and Russia, gained momentum. This led to significant Jewish immigration to Palestine as an attempt to return to their homeland post-holocaust.Key Events:UN Partition Plan (1947): Following increased tensions and violence between Jewish and Arab communities and the end of the British Mandate, the United Nations proposed a plan to partition Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem as an international city. The Jewish leaders accepted the plan, but the Arab leaders did not because they already lived in the land.Formation of Israel (1948): In 1948, the State of Israel was declared. Neighboring Arab countries intervened in disappointment, leading to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Israel retained its declared borders and expanded its territory. This war resulted in a significant number of Palestinian Arabs either fleeing or being expelled from their homes, an event Palestinians refer to as the Nakba ("catastrophe"). Over 700,000 Palestinians were displaced and lost their homes and resources.Six-Day War (1967): Tensions led to another war, during which Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights, and Sinai Peninsula. Israel later returned the Sinai to Egypt but kept the other areas. The continuing Israeli occupation of these territories is seen by Palestinians as a denial of their right to self-determination and statehood. The presence of the Israeli military in these areas and the associated security measures are major points of contention. So, what's the current situation? The core issues of "the conflict" today include the borders of Israel and Palestine, Palestinians' rights, Jerusalem's status, and security concerns. Over the decades, multiple attempts at peace, including the Oslo Accords and Camp David Summit, have been made but with limited success. Today, Israel exists as a recognized state, while Palestinians primarily live in the West Bank, governed by the Palestinian Authority, and in the Gaza Strip, governed by Hamas. The status of East Jerusalem, which both Israelis and Palestinians see as their capital, remains one of the most contentious points. The situation is further complicated by violence and displacement of people. Palestinians seek recognition and representation on the global stage. The lack of an opportunity for a unified Palestinian state and the challenges Palestinian representatives face in international forums are sources of frustration. Palestine doesn't have a full seat at the table in the same way that Israel does. Both parties have resulted in horrific acts of violence (with a significantly tipped scale) that stem from oppression and generational trauma. What we see now in 2023 is just the tip of the iceberg to a deep-seated issue of imperialism, colonialism, and apartheid. Again, this is my best attempt to explain with compassion and care. I recognize that many people don't know where to begin on this subject and I hope I aided in that process. As always, I thank you for listening. Father's Day, much like Mother's Day, is complicated. In this episode, I extend love to those who find themselves in a less cheerful space on Father's Day. At the same time, I celebrate the Dads. Dads are different from Fathers being that one does not have to be connected biologically to be someone's Dad. Being a Dad is a choice made on love and commitment with presence. With the help of a few Dads in the biblical text, we are celebrating the Day of Dads!To listen to the episode my Dad, you can hear it here: Behind the Music with Mr. PatAs always, I thank you for listening. In this episode, I am talking about Pride month! In my time as a pastor, people would ask me about my stance on homosexuality. As a remember of the alphabet mafia, my stance is one that affirms my identity with a theological perspective that I share on this episode.Did you know that pride began as a protest? It is an uprising against police violence and is an act of resistance to the empire. Pride was founded out of the efforts of Queer and Trans Black and Brown women and gender non-conforming persons. This is also shared on this epside. And finally, we go there in regards to rainbow capitalism and rainbow washing. It is time that these big corporations start putting their money where there mouth is rather than presenting that they care about the LGBTQIA community. As always, I thank you for listening. Mental health has often been stigmatized and criminalized within the Western world. It is time that we have an honest conversation about mental health. This is not something that we can over-spiritualize or think that we can pray away. Everyone, at some point, needs to get on the couch and talk to a therapist. Don’t Forget to Pray: Discerning The Call and Whatnot Welcome to Porshanality Podcast! A curiously sermonic podcast playground for adulting over 30. I’m an entrepreneur, coach, ordained minister, spiritual advisor, writer, and so much more. Join me weekly on Wednesdays as we grow and live together in community.Discernment is the ability to make well-informed and perceptive decisions. It involves the capacity to distinguish between right and wrong, or truth and deceit, by carefully analyzing the underlying nuances. Discernment is often closely associated with judgment, wisdom, insight, or the ability to perceive that which isn't immediately apparent. In a spiritual context, discernment is seen as the process of understanding and making decisions in line with one's spiritual or religious beliefs. It involves sensing or understanding matters at a deeper, often spiritual or metaphysical, level. Spiritual discernment is often linked to intuition, inner guidance, and aligning oneself with higher spiritual truths. It helps individuals make choices that align with their spiritual journey and overall purpose. For me, one of the tools in the discernment process is prayer. Whatever you are discerning, remember to pray. This was the wisdom that I shared with a group of young adults who are discerning their next steps regarding what God is calling them to and who God is calling them to be. Or perhaps, what God is calling them towards, and what God is calling them away form. As always, I thank you for listening. I don't know who needs to hear this, but celebrate anyhow. Truly. Life will keep lifing and we need to make the moments that light our souls on fire. We need to make space for the things that bring us joy. If it's a birthday, graduation, wedding, celebrate. There is enough turmoil in the world that will discourage us from wanting to celebrate. Let's be honest and keep it real. As much as it is a celebratory day, it is also complex. On Mother's Day 2022, I had the opportunity to preach on Mother's Day and I want to offer that sermon to you. It is the story of Peter raising Tabitha from the dead. IN times like these, we can all use a little resurrection power. May you be blessed, encouraged, and seen on this day. I’m an entrepreneur, coach, ordained minister, spiritual advisor, writer, and so much more. Join me weekly on Wednesdays as we grow and live together in the community. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but your ancestors are not demonic. In fact, Jesus is an ancestor. We are seeing a rise of white supremacy cosplaying in Blackface in Black churches and preaching anti-Black messages. This has to end. We must engage Black spirituality and Black religion with critical thinking. This episode addresses the notion that sound theology should be accessible to people everywhere. Liberation theology has not always been accessible to the broader public because of the “seminary paywall.” However, it is the responsibility of the seminary-trained preacher to preach the truth full and free for the people. Growing up in Bridgeport, CT, I had access to liberation theology at my church when it wasn’t popular to preach. When it came to my spiritual formation, I was encouraged to read and to become a student before I could lead. We need more preachers and proclaimers reading and engaging in sound study. Here are a few authors who have a catalog of works that I recommend as required reading for constructing Black Spirituality: Anything and everything written by James H. Cone, Emilie Townes, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Howard Thurman, Alice Walker, Delores S. Williams, Renita J. Weems, Kaite Geneva Cannon, and Malidoma Patrice Some. The Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. This includes Black people, Brown People, Asain People, Indigenous People, Queer People, Trans people, Jewish People, Muslim People, and more. In light of Earth Day, in this episode, I want to talk about environmental racism. Environmental racism refers to the disproportionate exposure of communities of color and low-income communities to environmental hazards and pollution and the lack of access to environmental resources and benefits. It is a form of systemic discrimination when these communities are subjected to higher levels of environmental risk and a lower quality of life due to discriminatory land use policies, zoning practices, and corporate decisions. Environmental racism can manifest in various ways, including but not limited to:Siting of polluting industries: Toxic waste facilities, landfills, and factories that produce air, water, and soil pollution are often disproportionately located in communities of color and low-income areas. This results in higher exposure to hazardous pollutants for residents of these communities.Lack of access to green spaces: Marginalized communities often have limited access to parks, green spaces, and recreational areas, negatively impacting their physical and mental health.Food deserts: Low-income neighborhoods and communities of color may lack access to fresh, healthy food options, leading to higher rates of diet-related illnesses.Poor air and water quality: These communities often experience higher air and water pollution levels, leading to increased health risks and a lower quality of life.Climate change impacts: Vulnerable populations are often more susceptible to the impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather events, heat waves, and flooding, due to inadequate infrastructure and limited resources.Exclusion from decision-making: Marginalized communities are often excluded from environmental decision-making processes, leading to a lack of representation and advocacy for their needs and concerns. Those impacted by environmental racism typically include people of color, Indigenous peoples, and low-income communities. However, it is important to recognize that the impacts of environmental racism can be intersectional, affecting various marginalized groups differently based on factors such as race, socioeconomic status, gender, and ability. By addressing environmental racism and advocating for environmental justice, we can work towards a more equitable and sustainable future for all communities. As always, I thank you for listening. Begin Again: My Truth About Failure and Whatnot Welcome to Porshanality Podcast! A curiously sermonic podcast playground for adulting over 30. Because let’s keep it real, life will keep life with swift transitions, but together we can honor the moments we are in and keep on living. I am your host, Porsha Williams Gates. I’m an entrepreneur, coach, ordained minister, spiritual advisor, writer, and so much more. Join me weekly on Wednesdays as we grow and live together in community. Today, I want to talk about failure. What is failure and what does it mean to fail? In order to understand failure, one must understand success. With the chaos of Netflix’s Live Special for Love Is Blind and with the buzz around the recent numbers of Chloe Bailey’s debut album, we have a case study for understanding what failure means and how we can respond to perceptions of failure. By the end of this episode, listeners will understand:Progress, not perfectionExperimenting is the key when trying, testing, and figuring things out publicly. It takes courage to put yourself out there publiclyIt’s ok to grieve what didn’t work out. Give yourself permission to grieve and mount what didn't meet your expectations. When the future is wrapped in our idea of success and life hands us something else, it hurts.Take the experience and see what you learned from the process. Is it worth trying again? Should you table the idea? Can it be refined?Try again and incorporate an element of play and joy for the fun of it. Loosen the expectations. What is at the core of the foundation? Return to the why of why you started.Rest in the wisdom that you tried the thing. Attempting is half the battle. Perhaps it’s time to redefine what success looks like.As always, we thank you for listening. Please rate, comment, and subscribe. Join me weekly on Wednesdays as we grow and live together in the community.Today’s episode, it’s time to talk about that time Jesus said, “**** This,” and Whatnot. Ok, he didn’t actually use profanity, but he was totally over the idea of sacrificing himself on the cross. It’s Holy Week; if we are honest, we should admit that Jesus was not ready to die. What we learn from his final moments in the Garden of Gethsemane are lessons for us all. We witness a Jesus who is equally as human as he is divine, full of compassion, radical honesty, and vulnerability. While he was frustrated with his disciples for falling asleep, we do see Jesus having an intimate moment with God the Creator. What can we learn from Jesus at this moment? It’s to be human and to accept yourself as a human being with emotions and feelings—this and more on the podcast. As always, we thank you for listening. Please rate, comment, and subscribe. Today’s episode, it’s time to talk about America’s problem with the boarder crisis and with guns. The treatment of asylum seekers who are detained at the US boarder is an issue. And how is it that we are still seeing mass shootings in schools in 2023. America has a problem and it must end with us. We need to stand up and take action. We need to raise awareness. There are several ways to raise awareness about senseless gun violence in America, some of which are:Social Media Campaigns: Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube provide a powerful platform to raise awareness about gun violence. Using hashtags such as #EndGunViolence, #GunControlNow, and #NeverAgain can help to amplify your message and reach a broader audience.Organize and Participate in Protests: Organizing and participating in peaceful protests can help to bring attention to the issue of gun violence. Protests can range from large-scale marches to smaller demonstrations, such as sit-ins or rallies.Support Gun Control Organizations: There are several organizations dedicated to ending gun violence in America, such as Moms Demand Action, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Brady Campaign. Donating to these organizations or volunteering your time can help to support their efforts and raise awareness.Write to Your Elected Officials: Writing to your elected officials, such as your senators and representatives, can help to voice your concerns about gun violence and urge them to take action. You can also participate in phone or email campaigns organized by gun control organizations to pressure lawmakers to enact gun control laws.Educate Others: Educating others about the facts and statistics of gun violence in America can help to raise awareness and dispel myths about gun ownership. This can include sharing articles, infographics, or videos that explain the issue in a clear and concise manner. As always, we thank you for listening. Please rate, comment, and subscribe.
