On this month's Whatcha Heard, we show some love for Norwegian jazz with the pyschedelic jazz rock of Elephant9 and the electronic-infused jazz of Jaga Jazzist. Also shoutout to trios and duos of all varietals: tune in for a new track from Texas trio Khraungbin, London janglers World News, our favorite downtempo duo Tosca, and of course the seminal dream pop duo Beach House. And plenty more great tracks on this month's monthly mixtape. We chat about the short-lived and underrated indie band Majesty Crush. With lead singer David Stroughter's neurotic vocal delivery and a sound that didn't fit neatly within the lines of the 90s rock soundscape, Majesty Crush defied categorization in their brief but spectacular career. Their music is being celebrated in the release of Butterflies Don't Go Away, a compilation record featuring all tracks from their Love 15 debut record as well as their handful of EPs that followed. Join as we dive into one of the most underrated shoegaze acts of the 90s. We pay attention to an often ignored genre on this beloved podcast of ours: electronic music. Sure we sneak it in from time to time, but it rarely gets the love it deserves. For this month's mixtape, we've got 3 tracks that fall under the IDM / house umbrella of electronic music, as well as some 80s new wave and even a Down With The Sickness cover played in the style of Nirvana! Tracklist Kings of Leon - Mustang Mac Glocky - Down With The Sickness (Disturbed Cover in the style of Nirvana) Wray - Limelight The 1981 - Mona Lisa Talk Talk - Tomorrow Started Microlot - Watercolour Nabihah Iqbal - Gentle Heart Bella Boo - Orange Soft Crystals - Afterthought Stay Inside - My Fault Strumbrush - TV This episode is part of the Pantheon Podcast Network. Eager to ditch the nu-metal label, Deftones headed into the studio with a goal to separate themselves from the pack on their second album Around the Fur. This ambition saw the group embrace their non-metal influences, leaning on the cerebral and ethereal qualities of bands like Depeche Mode. This combined with Chino Moreno's unusual vocals gave Around the Fur it's signature loud-soft dynamic, perhaps earning the band it's reputation as "the metal band it's okay for non-metal fans to like." Tracklist Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It) Deftones - Lhabia Deftones - Mascara Deftones - Dai the Flu Deftones - Damone Deftones - Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast Network. Look, we'll be the first ones to admit it: we listen to a lot of shoegaze and dream pop on this podcast. And you'll get plenty of that on this episode. But you'll also get children's songs written by a beloved 90s alt-rocker, an aggressive blues-harmonica, and some epic 70s jazz-fusion from a group of musicians that used to pal around with Miles Davis. Only on No Filler will you experience that level of musical whiplash! Tune in for our monthly mixtape episode for January. To kick off the year, we return to our deep-dive episode format with a look at Dinosaur Jr.'s second record, the massively influential fuzz of You're Living All Over Me. The signature ear-bleeding guitar sound and slacker vocal delivery J Mascis perfected on this record went on to influential countless grunge acts and indie bands in the 90s and 2000s. This record was way ahead of its time and a truly seminal record that hinted at was right around the corner just years before grunge would take the underground mainstream. It's Halloween night, which means it's time to get spooked. On tonight's bonus episode, I'm joined by horror fanatic and Austin-based musician Adrian Sebastian Haynes to chat all things Italian horror. We're diving into the films of iconic director Dario Argento, and if you're a horror nerd like us you know that means one thing: tonight we're listening to Goblin. This legendary prog-rock group partnered with Argento on many of his iconic films dating back to the 1977 classic Suspiria. Grab a flashlight and a good pair of headphones as we dive into some classic Italian horror. Tracklist (all songs by Goblin unless noted) Suspiria Theme (Suspiria 1977) Mad Puppet (Profondo Rosso 1975) Black Forest (Suspiria 1977) Danza (Wampyr 1976) Crows - Claudio Simonetti (Opera 1987) Threat (The Devil and the Universe Remix, Demons 1985) This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast Network. This episode originally aired October 31st, 2021. We get it: if you have to hear Monster Mash one more time, your boombox will be the only thing getting graveyard smashed. If you're in need for some new tunes for your costume party tonight, we've got you covered. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats takes psychedelic rock and doom metal and mashes it with The Manson Family, Universal Monsters, and all the other horror film essentials on your October watch list. And of course, singer K.R. Starrs is an absolute vocal doppelgänger for John Lennon. What more could you ask for? Turn the lights down low, light some candles, and tune in for our bonus Halloween episode. This episode originally aired October 31st, 2020. John Carpenter is often referred to as the master of horror. His iconic Halloween franchise defined the slasher film formula for decades to come. But for fans of synthwave music (and the use of synth in cinema), we have Carpenter to thank for that as well. His extremely effective use of synths to build atmosphere and heighten tension in his films went on to influence countless synthwave artists and film composers. On this Halloween bonus episode of No Filler, we listen to a couple tracks from his 1982 score for Halloween III, and talk about his legacy in both film and music. Tracklist: "The Fog Theme" "Chariots of Pumpkins" (Halloween III) "Local Boy, No Way" (Halloween III) "The Upside Down" (Stranger Things) "Halloween Theme" This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. This episode originally aired October 31st, 2019. On this, the Eve of Hallow's, we're heading to the graveyard with shovels in hand. We bring along a Walkman and Quentin's CD copy of "We Dig With Finger's Crossed" to help set the ambiance for the evening. One of The Undoing of David Wright's only full-length albums, this little known gem from 2005 tells the story of William Burke & William Hare, the infamous 19th century grave robbers of Edinburgh, Scotland. The UoDW was an extremely short-lived post-modern electro-punk band hailing from Denton, Texas circa early 2000s. While attending college at The University of North Texas, these guys made a name for themselves for their Rocky Horror Picture Show-esque vibes, often donning makeup and wearing clothes fashioned out of trash bags.
