“The personality of the photographer, his approach, is really more important than his technical genius” - Lee Miller Richard Kalvar. London - 2015 Happy New year to you all. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are all bloated from wine and cheese. Just like me. There are some new things on the horizon for Outerfocus, and I hope this year will be even better than last year. It was a good one, considering it was our first. A big thank you to everyone that has made donations to the podcast and to everyone who purchased the fundraising calendar. Your support is duly noted, and your hard earned cash is being invested back into the podcast so we can make it bigger and better.Talking of bigger and better, this week we are blessed with the presence of the one and only, Richard Kalvar: member of Magnum since the mid seventies and all round good egg. It was photographers like Richard that helped me to see the artistry in photography, that made me understand that photography was as expressive a medium as any other, and that you didn’t have to take it all too seriously. This not only changed my perception of what photography was, but fundamentally changed me as a human being. Hopefully for the better. Richard tells us about his move to Paris in the 60’s for an acting job, his travels around Europe and how he became a photographer. This is the photograph that he mentioned, the one where he realised he was actually onto something. Richard Kalvar. Paris - 1966 If you haven’t already, go check out his book, Earthlings. It’s a master class in observation and humour. Richard also has a Photofile book being released soon.Photographer of note this week is, Lee Miller: Model, Fashion Photographer, Photojournalist, War Correspondent, Portrait Photographer, Surrealist and all round Bad Ass. At the moment Paris in LA with, David Carol & Ashly Stohl, for their joint exhibition - Family & FriendsWe’re spending a lot less time on our historical focus but we did touch on Man Ray and his photographic work, involving techniques like solarisation and photograms (which he humbly called “rayographs”). “None. They should just go out and photograph and stop talking about it. That’s the only way they are going to find themselves. They can’t do it in their heads – they have to go out and do it in the camera and get it on film” - Berenice Abbott - when asked is she had any gems of wisdom for the photographer today, Professional Photographer's Survival Guide by Charles E. RotkinOur guest this week is London-based photographer, Matt Stuart. Best known as a “street photographer,” (or “photographer” which is the preferred term), Matt told us how his former life as a skater and working in a call centre prepared him for a career in photography. We didn’t spend much time discussing Berenice Abbott, - or Walker Evans, or Helen Levitt or Robert Frank - but take a look at her work which spanned portraiture of avant-garde artists, the modernising spaces of New York City, to representations of scientific concepts. “Look at the things around you, the immediate world around you. If you are alive, it will mean something to you, and if you care enough about photography, and if you know how to use it, you will want to photograph that meaningness. If you let other people’s vision get between the world and your own, you will achieve that extremely common and worthless thing, a pictorial photograph.” – Paul StrandOur guest this week is Portuguese wedding photographer, Pedro Vilela. We discuss his short-lived photojournalism career, his move to weddings, and how street photography is the best training for his approach to shooting weddings.Pedro joins us on our look back at the history of photography which focuses on Paul Strand. Strand's work spanned many genres, including film, and a majority of the twentieth century. From social documentary to abstract cityscapes, Strand influenced the acceptance of photography as more than just a tool for representation of objective reality. Pedro's linkshttps://www.pedrovilela.pthttps://www.instagram.com/pedrovilelaphoto/https://www.instagram.com/pedrovilelabsides/Ian’s LinksWebsiteInstagramIan Weldon - Photography EducationBradley’s Links:WebsiteFacebookInstagramTwitterMusic - James William Nicholson Thank you for listening, see you in two weeks!Ian & Bradley
This week we open up the floor to your questions, which we haphazardly, and long windedly, try to answer. And to be fair, this is only our opinion based on the experience we have. Some of you might agree, some of you might not. That’s the point. It’s just conversation and posing ideas - there is no right or wrong, it’s all open to interpretation……..We only get through about 4 or 5, but plan to do some more episodes like this in the future so please keep sending them - info@outerfocuspodcast.com or message us through the facebook group. We don’t want this podcast to be a standard, run-of-the-mill, what’s expected podcast. The point is to learn, and grow, and have fun. Maybe we’ll do a drunk episode!A couple more things:1. You can now support the podcast! “I don't think there's any such thing as teaching people photography, other than influencing them a little. People have to be their own learners. They have to have a certain talent”  - Imogen CunninghamHello! It’s Outerfocus podcast time again and this week we’re joined by the non-bearded, Fadi BouKaram.Fadi is Lebanese photographer who, at the moment, is road tripping across the US visiting all towns called Lebanon. For a second time. An issue with his truck brakes allowed him to be around to talk to us about his trip, his beginnings in photography and his OCD. Outerfocus podcast is a safe place. We also introduce, Imogen Cunningham: Member of the f64 group and a prolific photographer for over 70 years. “Don’t be repressed in your work, dare to experiment, consider any urge, if in a new direction all the better.” – Edward WestonWelcome to the Outerfocus Podcast!Episode 27. I can’t quite believe we’ve been jabbering away for so long. Are you not sick of us yet? This milestone episode (every episode is a milestone, for like, a metaphorical mile or something) we are joined by World Champion skate boarder, Ed Templeton. Ed is a pro skateboarder, photographer, designer, painter, skateboard company (Toy Machine) owner and all round nice guy. Among many other things. We were delighted that he gave us his time and chatted for a good two hours, and we could have gone way longer. The conversation started going as soon as the record button went down, so I’ve pretty much left this episode uncut. I’ve chopped a couple of bits that I didn’t think were relevant, due to time and file size constraints, but this is how it went down. We also mention Edward Weston. Oh, and Ansel Adams. Ed’s LinksWebsiteToy Machine WikipediaInstagram - @ed.templeton & @wires_crossed Wires CrossedPodcast Links:https://www.outerfocuspodcast.cominfo@outerfocuspodcast.comIan’s LinksWebsiteInstagramIan Weldon - Photography EducationBradley’s Links:WebsiteFacebookInstagramTwitterMusic - James William Nicholson Thank you for listening, see you in two weeks!Ian & Bradley

’When I first became interested in photography I thought it was the whole cheese, my idea was to have it recognised as one of the fine arts. Most photographers seem to operate with a pane of glass between themselves and their subjects. They just can’t get inside and know the subject.” – Edward SteichenWelcome to the Outerfocus Podcast! And we’re back with a bang! This week we are joined by David Carol. A photographer, lecturer, writer, curator and publisher.  We talk with David about how he got started in photography, right from owning his first camera at the age of 18 and his first job at The Image Bank, to more recently being retired and publishing photography books with his publishing company, Peanut Press. History of photography this week (very) briefly touches on Edward Steichen. To be fair, we’ll probably go into more detail about Steichen next week as trying to stay on one subject was a bit like trying to herd wild cats. A plethora of things were discussed this week, including: processing film, cameras, Rolex watches and David’s top five influential photographers, among many other things. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed having this conversation. Links:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_SteichenICPGuest Links: https://www.davidcarol.comhttps://peanutpressbooks.comHost Links:https://www.outerfocuspodcast.cominfo@outerfocuspodcast.comBradley Hansonhttps://www.bradleyhanson.comhttps://www.facebook.com/bradleyhansonphotographyhttps://www.instagram.com/bradleyhansonphotography/https://twitter.com/bradleyhansonIan Weldonhttp://ianweldon.comhttps://www.instagram.com/not_wedding_photography/https://www.facebook.com/Ian-Weldon-Photography-124854627581367/Books:Lee Friedlander - Photographs<------click book for purchase infoThe Family of Man<------click book for purchase info Music - James William Nicholson Thank you for listening, see you next Wednesday!Ian & Bradley
"There is still a misunderstanding on the subject of the straight print, as opposed to the modified print. Some champions of pure photography, as it is called, will even deny that a modified print is a photograph at all. For my part, I believe that if the X deposit forming an image is built up by the action of light, under the shadow of another image, transparent, and also due to light action, the result must be a photograph, whatever modifications the photographer has thought proper to introduce amongst the relative proportions of the deposit" - Robert DemachyWelcome to the Outerfocus podcast! This week we are joined by Argentinian photographer, Facundo Santana.  Although Facu shoots weddings he is also a great street photographer, and we discuss why shooting the street can better inform wedding photography.  English isn't Facu's first language and he has been learning by watching movies, reading books, and listening to the Outerfocus podcast (haha he's learning English from me! Some weird Geordie/Argentinian hybrid going on there)That said, he did a great job as it's difficult enough to learn a new language, let alone express ideas and concepts. Facu has agreed to write a guest post for the Outerfocus website to try and explain a little better his ideas around the benefit or practicing street photography. History this week is, Robert Demachy, and we talk about his processes, approach to the medium and his involvement with Stieglitz's Photo Secession. We also discuss his frustration with the conservative views of other photographers of the day and how that same issue is alive and well even to this day. Correction: I mention Julia Margaret Cameron as a photographer who went the ideals of Stieglitz and the Photo Secession. My apologies. It was, of course, Gertrude Käsebier.Facundo Santana Linkshttp://www.facundosantana.com/https://www.instagram.com/facusantana/?hl=enHost Links:https://www.outerfocuspodcast.cominfo@outerfocuspodcast.comhttps://www.instagram.com/f8kym/Bradley Hansonhttps://www.bradleyhanson.comhttps://www.facebook.com/bradleyhansonphotographyhttps://www.instagram.com/bradleyhansonphotography/https://twitter.com/bradleyhansonIan Weldonhttp://ianweldon.comhttps://www.instagram.com/not_wedding_photography/https://www.facebook.com/Ian-Weldon-Photography-124854627581367/Books:Magnum - Contact Sheets<---------Click Book for Purchase infoMusic - James William Nicholson - https://www.facebook.com/jamesnicholsonmusic/Thank you for listening, see you next Wednesday!Ian & Bradley

We hear more about Kym’s journey, including why she prefers being a second shooter at weddings, as well as the podcast she co-hosts named Vinyl Junkies. We also go a little off track with some interesting discussion on music! Taking a look back at history we focus on Eadweard Muybridge this week. We discuss how this English photographer known particular for his motion photography of humans and animals, who was once a book seller, endured a handful of life changing events including serious injury and a murder charge. We look deeper into these events and explore their relevance to the work and processes he is still renowned for today. Links:http://www.f8studio.comhttp://vinyljunkies.cohttps://www.instagram.com/f8kym/http://susankaegrant.com/flash.htmlHost Links:https://www.outerfocuspodcast.cominfo@outerfocuspodcast.comhttps://www.instagram.com/f8kym/ Bradley Hansonhttps://www.bradleyhanson.comhttps://www.facebook.com/bradleyhansonphotographyhttps://www.instagram.com/bradleyhansonphotography/https://twitter.com/bradleyhanson Ian Weldonhttp://ianweldon.comhttps://www.instagram.com/not_wedding_photography/https://www.facebook.com/Ian-Weldon-Photography-124854627581367/ Books:Diane Arbus, Revelations<------Click book for purchase infoMusic - James William Nicholson Thank you for listening, see you next Wednesday!Ian & Bradley
