We’ve chatted about sources of inspiration in the past, but never before have we got this specific about what really inspires (and doesn’t inspire) each of us. Tune in as we talk through how challenging it can be to stay in your lane and find success outside of your industry!
We’ve covered worth in previous episodes but as freelance businesses owners it resurfaces again and again. You move through a slower time where you’re more likely to bend your pricing and worth and then things pick back up again and you have to remind yourself of your pricing, your time and most importantly how to re-learn and hold your worth in your business. On this episode we will both dive into each of our experiences with doing so.
In this episode we dive into what it has been like to each start and run our businesses as women. We tackle the typical pitfalls we’ve fell into, what we’ve done to overcome those challenges and how we have found strength and confidence through the process. We shout out a couple different resources who have helped us on our personal journeys by sharing their stories. Amy had the pleasure of watching a presentation by Nick North and Hailey’s obsession with Brené Brown runs deep - this is the book she was referencing.
Whether you hire a manager, assistant or agent there are potential benefits and downfalls to outsourcing when it comes to workflow. On this episode we talk through each of our experiences when it comes to workflow when others are involved, our tips on finding the perfect person for your business (spoiler: this person looks different for us all) and the realities of when and if things go south. If you missed our first episode on workflow, listen here to catch episode 8 (we referenced it incorrectly in the episode as episode 4 - sorry about that!) packed with our favorite apps and systems for managing your business without outside help.
Major changes are happening for both of us and it feels a little crazy! Get the scoop on what Amy learned from this year's Family Narrative conference, how she plans to apply it to her business and how she's moving through the transition. And, learn what changes are starting to take form for Hailey, her business and what it means for the future of Household!
We’ve all been in the uncomfortable position of having the opportunity to do something in our career that’s just outside our skillset or the comfort zone of our skillset. It can be overwhelming and exciting, but we’ve learned that despite your hesitations, a lot of the time it’s important to fake it till you make it. Folks generally don’t offer you these opportunities unless they believe you’re capable and if you don’t try you’ll never know. On this episode we break down the times it’s important to take the leap, how to make sure you’re not completely in over your head and how we’ve made it work in our own experiences!
Today, on Building Household with Hailey & Amy, we’re celebrating our 30th episode by sharing the lessons we’ve learned since starting each of our businesses. These have helped shape how we run things, how we manage work-from-home life, how we create work-life balance and so much more. We believe these are lessons every freelancer should know and since we don’t keep secrets here, we wanted to share them all with you guys!
On this episode we both get real real about the growing pains we’re each experiencing at the moment. Listen as we share how we’re working our way through them and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Honestly, this conversation was therapeutic for us both and made us realize that all roads with growing pains have got to lead to a whole bunch of g-r-o-w-t-h and that we will be just fine despite our deepest doubts and insecurities.
On this episode we’re sitting down with Mariah, the founder and photographer, behind Mariah Cropley Photography. We chat about everything from how she started her businesses to how she first connected with Amy (her mentor) and everything in between. It’s easy to get caught up in your own bubble and how businesses works for you exactly where you are so it was nice to learn how different things are for Mariah in Maine. She’s also done so much to reinvest back into her business which we believe is a valuable lesson for any freelancer to learn! Find Mariah’s work at : http://www.mariahcropleyphotography.com/
Tune in as we ramble our way through each of our New Year’s resolutions and the ways we want to shape and change our businesses this year. Plus, catch our very special guest… Owen Drew! ;)
We’ve all dealt with clients who just don’t “get it”. In the midst of the busiest time of the year, we are realizing now more than ever the importance of getting clear with our clients about the way we work. Discussing why we need to be proactive when it comes to potential pitfalls in our sessions and projects and how doing so helps to create sustainable businesses we’re proud of and an overall better client experience.
Given the political climate it seems that now more than ever people are speaking up about what matters on social media. On this episode we chat through each of our stances on making things personal and political with our businesses online and in real life. We are clearly speaking from our own experiences and while this episode is very opinion based, we believe that whether it’s big or small there’s an opportunity to create more authenticity online and with your working relationships when you speak up about what matters to you personally.
Forget the money, forget the numbers and think back to why you originally started your business. It’s so easy to misplace our passion when we are caught up in hustling but today we’re getting real honest about each of our creative realities and how we reignite our creative sparks!
In a culture where more is more it can feel nearly impossible to pause, take stock of what’s important and take a slower route than you originally planned when it comes to your business. Today we are sitting down with Shannon Althin, the co-founder of Natti Natti, about re-prioritizing to make room for intentional creativity that supports a life you love. We dive into Shannon’s backstory, balance, what she’s learned this past year after having no choice but to slow down and what’s in store for Natti Natti this fall. Find out more about Natti Natti here: https://natti-natti.com/.
On today's episode we're catching you guys up on life these last few weeks, how overwhelming our workloads and lives have been, and how we have learned to navigate the pitfalls of overcommitting as creatives. As much as there are benefits to being yes women, we're learning that we certainly can't do it all!
On this episode Amy is spilling all her photography basics for anyone who is interested in improving their photography either on their phone or camera. Listen in as we run through what you need to know about lighting, aperture, shutter-speed, composition + some general tips on editing and how to get the best shot! As a bonus we also share what makes us deem a photo “Instagram worthy” and our process for being intentional with social media and each of our brands. Last week we sat down and answered a series of questions to help each of us identify our dream clients. It brought such clarity to us on the why behind our businesses and gave us a new perspective when it comes to putting content and services into the world that we had to share. Seeing through our dream clients lens makes things much more simple and we are getting into the nitty gritty on all of it on this episode (+ we recorded it live)!
On this episode we share some of the realities of being a freelancer and how quitting your day job isn’t always the answer. We are both beyond grateful for our businesses, but working for yourself isn’t always as easy as it seems. We chat about what we miss about working for someone else, why it might be the right choice for you and your life to keep a traditional job and ultimately why we continue to run these businesses of ours!
After a necessary week off to nurture our friendship we are back at it and we’re talking all about our working relationship. We get questions from you guys all the time about how our dynamic works and today we’re breaking down everything from payment to trade to communication to finding the balance between a healthy friendship and a working relationship. We’re not experts, but we like to think we’ve established a pretty great set up!
After last week’s devastating news about Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade each taking their lives, we felt like it was really important to take the time to sit down and discuss social media, mental health and how we can all attempt to keep things in perspective. We chat a lot about each of our whys’, staying authentic, finding happiness outside of material success and the ways in which we can make social media a positive place and encourage each other to seek help when it’s needed. Please call the suicide prevention lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 for free and confidential support if you’re in distress, are seeking prevention or crisis resources for you or your loved ones.
