In a creative journey through the steps of evaporation, condensation and precipitation Pastor Tim Brown will take us on a journey through Psalm 29 and highlight the parallels between the forming of a Mediterranean stormcloud and the dumping of water and the steps that faithful preachers go through in studying, meditating and preaching.   Tim Brown had a life changing encounter with Jesus Christ on January 3rd, 1972. After that, he went to Bible College where he gained a degree and a bride. He has been in many forms of ministry since February of 1973. He has been a youth pastor, an assistant pastor, and a senior pastor. He planted the church, Calvary Chapel Fremont in Fremont, California, in January of 1997, and has been the Senior Pastor there, ever since. What is a Vision Statement and why does it matter? Is there a point in having a "Vision Sunday" at the beginning of the year, or is the congregation better served by "dripping vision" throughout the 52 Sundays of the calendar year? Is having a church vision even Biblical? Mike asks these questions and more to the more-than-capable Luke Simmons in a fun and informative conversation about the difference between church vision and church mission, and so many other topics having to do with leading healthy churches.  Luke Simmons is the founding and Lead Pastor of Ironwood Church, a growing church in the Phoenix metro area. He’s been in full-time pastoral ministry since 2004 and has the scars to prove it. As a catalytic leader, he’s been curating resources and coaching leaders for over a decade. Because Luke loves to learn and enjoys sharing what he’s learned with other pastors, he founded Faithful and Fruitful to help pastors experience a lifetime of joyful, God-honoring ministry. Through resources, tools, and coaching experiences, he helps pastors build their confidence to lead for the long-haul in a changed and changing world. Faithful and Fruitful is a biblical vision of ministry and a lot of fun. As an experienced church planter, Luke also leads the Redeemer City to City Church Planting Incubator for the Surge Network in Phoenix, where he helps planters begin their churches with theological vision, effective systems, and sustainable personal habits. Luke has a communications degree from the University of Illinois, where he played third base for the Fighting Illini, as well as an M.A. in Missional Theology from Covenant Theological Seminary. Heath Hardesty from Valley Community Church in Pleasanton, California explores the concept of "symphonic preaching" with Mike, and the value of emphasizing connections between the Old and New Testaments and their relevance today to all of life. Heath sees the wonder of the world around us, and the beauty and treasure of the Bible's story. Heath also talks about how he dealt with preaching a sermon so bad, that he ruined someone's Christmas, and his commitment to consistent growth and improvement as a preacher.  Heath Hardesty is an author and the lead pastor of Valley Community Church in the heart of Pleasanton, in the East Bay region of California.    Heath grew up in a blue-collar home and was a plumber’s apprentice and service plumber in Colorado for several years before becoming a pastor in the technicolor land of Apple, Google, Pixar, Meta, Tesla, Twitter(X), and Netflix. He is married to Marla, his wife of 18 years, and has three kids: Silas, Hadley, and Olivia.    He holds an undergraduate in Literature and Religious Studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master’s in Biblical Leadership (MABL) from Western Seminary, and a Master’s in Biblical and Theological Studies (MABTS) also from Western Seminary. Wesley Towne speaks about the 4 steps that he takes in his sermon preparation process to go from the passage to his own heart and then to people of his particular context and culture.  Wesley lives in Davis, CA with his wife and chihuahua Lucy. He has planted two churches, both in university cities, and is thankful for the opportunity to pastor and invest into the next generation. He is currently the Lead Pastor of Bayside Davis. Wesley is also the founder of Better Days, an organization seeking to bring hope, awareness and education to all things mental health + suffering. Better Days helps people, churches and leaders understand the intersection between mental health + suffering, and following Jesus. In his down time he writes and podcasts on mental health and suffering, runs, reads and enjoys plant based eating.  https://www.betterdaysfmly.co Additionally, Wesley serves as the pastor of Bayside Davis. With previous experience directing a Bible College and teaching at Christian colleges and universities, he founded a church named Ekklesia in Eugene, OR in 2008. Under his leadership, Ekklesia experienced significant growth from a small gathering in a living room to a congregation of two thousand people across two campuses within five years. In 2013, Outreach Magazine recognized him as the youngest megachurch pastor in America.  Educationally, Wesley holds a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees. Above all, he is deeply committed to following Jesus, expressing love for others, and believes his purpose on earth is to offer encouragement and instill hope in individuals navigating through complex and challenging moments in life. Are the Psalms individual isolated poems that have no connection to one another, or are they a unified, edited story that we are supposed to notice? Wyatt Graham answers these questions and more in this conversation about how to think deeply about the Psalms, and what sort of connections should we expect to see from one chapter to the next.  Currently, he serves as the executive director of the Gospel Coalition Canada. He has spoken in a variety of ecclesial and academic settings and regularly writes a column called DeTrinitate for TGC Canada on the intersection of life and theology. He is married to Leanne, and they have one daughter and one son. Follow him on Twitter (@wagraham) and Instagram (@wyattagraham). Robertson, The Flow of the Psalms The best introduction to reading the Psalms as a book. Great place to start. Rydelnik and Blum (eds.) The Moody Handbook of Messianic Prophecy The Psalms essays are top-notch and closest to my view from anything I've read. Jim Hamilton's Psalms Vol 1 and Vol 2 (EBTC, forthcoming) Though Hamilton is heavy on typology, his is the best commentary that reads the Psalms as a book. Reardon, Christ in the Psalms He reads Jesus in every Psalm in the tradition of the Fathers. Quite devotional though and he doesn't defend his approach enough to convince the skeptical. On that note, Irenaeus' On the Apostolic Preaching, Augustine's Psalms commentaries, and Athanasius' To Marcellinus on the Interpretation of the Psalms are all incredible and show that what I'm saying about Jesus in the Psalms is far from new (even if I don't quite "get" everything they're seeing!) Mitchell, The Message of the Psalter The most impacting book on my interpretation of the Psalms. Incredibly provocative and unique. Dense though. Bates, The Birth of the Trinity Prosopological exegesis as practiced by the Fathers was the missing piece for me. Very dense though. Also the significance of meticulously organized sermon outlines and effective delivery techniques is discussed. Guzik emphasizes the importance of structuring sermons coherently to enhance clarity and resonance with the audience. In essence, this enlightening conversation with David Guzik offers invaluable guidance and wisdom for preachers seeking to enrich their sermon preparation, refine their delivery, and remain true to their authentic voice in conveying God's truth.  “For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10, ESV) Church History Related Episodes of Expositors Collective:  Armando Garcia - Learning from Church History https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/learning-from-church-history-with-armando-garcia  Ian Clary - Learning from the Puritans https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/learning-from-the-puritans-with-dr-ian-clary Ian Clary + Shane Angland : Learning from Augustine https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/learning-from-pastor-augustine-with-shane-angland-ian-clary Gerald Bray on John Chrysostom: https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/pastoral-preaching-brevity-and-john-chrysostom-gerald-bray  Resources Mentioned:  John Koessler episode:  https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/preaching-that-is-prayerful-and-priestly-john-koessler Chris Brown episode (Every passage has a story either in it or behind it)  https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/every-passage-has-a-story-either-in-it-or-behind-it-with-chris-brown Christ Brown interview (You have permission to be yourself) https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/you-have-permission-to-be-yourself-with-chris-brown  Jared Moore (the guy who told young Mike that he was trying to impress the congregation) https://twitter.com/jaredhmoore Ancient Christian Commentary series: https://www.ivpress.com/ancient-christian-commentary-on-scripture Connect: For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com  The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. Many people consider Jesus to be a great teacher and preacher, but few actually realise just how incredible and multilayered His teachings actually were. In this episode of Expositors Collective, Mike speaks with Dr. Peter J. Williams, the principal of Tyndale House in Cambridge, and the chair of the International Greek New Testament Project. He is also a member of the ESV Translation Oversight Committee, and the author of several books, including: Can We Trust the Gospels? Dr. Williams’ latest book is called The Surprising Genius of Jesus: What the Gospels Reveal about the Greatest Teacher, in which he examines Jesus’ teachings in the Gospels and shows how we know that these teachings truly do originate with Jesus, and that they show an incredible awareness of, and connection to the Old Testament in a way that would have triggered the memories of the first listeners, and which contains layers of meaning for us as readers today. Peter also gives insight into fruitful evangelism, unlocking of knowledge and some of the ways that Tyndale House can help ordinary preachers like us!  -  Dr Peter J. Williams is the Principal and CEO of Tyndale House, Cambridge. He was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he received his MA, MPhil, and PhD in the study of ancient languages related to the Bible. After his PhD, he was on staff in the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge (1997–1998) and thereafter taught Hebrew and Old Testament as an Affiliated Lecturer in Hebrew and Aramaic at the University of Cambridge and Research Fellow in Old Testament at Tyndale House, Cambridge (1998–2003). From 2003 to 2007 he was on the faculty of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where he became a Senior Lecturer in New Testament and Deputy Head of the School of Divinity, History, and Philosophy. Since 2007 he has been leading Tyndale House. Dr Williams is also an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Divinity in the University of Cambridge, Chair of the International Greek New Testament Project and a member of the Translation Oversight Committee of the English Standard Version of the Bible. He assisted Dr Dirk Jongkind in Tyndale House’s production of a major edition of the Greek New Testament and his book Can We Trust the Gospels? (Crossway, 2018) has been translated into 13 languages. His latest book, The Surprising Genius of Jesus: What the Gospels Reveal about the Greatest Teacher (Crossway), was published in October 2023. Gospel sanity in a world gone mad - this is what Ray Ortlund Jr is trying to offer to the next generation of pastors and leaders. In this conversation with Mike he talks about the value of remembering his own mortality, gathering and gospelling young men, and how Christ Himself is preaching through us as we exposit the Word.  He speaks about some of the wisdom that is contained in his latest book, co-authored with Sam Allberry "You're Not Crazy - Gospel Sanity for Weary Churches" In this practical guide, seasoned pastors Ray Ortlund and Sam Allberry help weary leaders renew their love for ministry by equipping them to build a gospel-centered culture into every aspect of their churches. Emphasizing the importance of healthy doctrine, they explain that failing to also nurture a healthy culture can be frustrating, polarizing, and even unbiblical. This encouraging guide features Scripture-focused advice on honesty, honour, preaching, leadership, and mission to support leaders and help them regain a beautiful, Christ-centered vision for their ministries.  Resources Mentioned:  You're Not Crazy book: https://www.crossway.org/books/youre-not-crazy-tpb/  You're Not Crazy Podcast:  https://open.spotify.com/show/2gjO1xAJVSomEdK6dVwnQh?si=1f98570e2bfd4972  Father Mapple's Sermon from Moby Dick: https://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/42/moby-dick/634/chapter-9-the-sermon/  J.I. Angie Thornton (Women's Ministry Director for TGC Quebec) speaks with Mike about the importance of seeking feedback and input from others as well as the irreplaceable value of solitude when it comes to preparing to teach the Bible.   They speak about the significance of seeking input on your teachings, both before and after the message has been delivered. Learn how constructive feedback can enhance your impact and deepen your understanding of God's Word. Thinking of Bible teaching as a "Community Project" will challenge conventional notions as we discuss the communal aspect of Bible teaching. Angie believes that teaching is not just a solo venture but a collaborative effort within the community of faith. There are some tips about how to navigate feedback: How to give it and how to receive it!  The longest section of the conversation focuses specifically on why men who teach the Bible should specifically seek out the input and the unique perspectives of women, and in so doing, are actually putting in to practice the complementarian convictions that we both hold dearly.  Whether you're a seasoned teacher or just starting, Angie Valasquez Thornton's insights will inspire you to embrace the collective wisdom of the community for a richer, more impactful teaching ministry. Together with her husband Dan, Angie served the Lord in Senegal for 10 years in leadership development. Settled in Montreal with their 2 daughters since August 2017, they continue to train leaders among French Canadians, the least evangelized people group in the North America. Angie is the Women's Ministry Director for The Gospel Coalition Quebec (SOLA) and a columnist at The Gospel Coalition Canada. She blogs in French at TPSG, where she also co-hosts a weekly podcast. You can access her YouTube channel here. Angie holds an MDiv from Moody Theological Seminary. Brian Synott sits down with Mike Neglia for a discussion about bivocational ministry, therapy, addiction recovery and prison ministry. He recounts his first sermon at a hyper-charismatic youth group in county Cork, Ireland in the late 1980s and the significant growth that has taken place in his ministry since then. They speak about the surprising influence of Calvary Chapel on Brian’s preaching philosophy and the value of verse-by-verse teaching as a way of growing believers AND combating heresy. In the most downloaded episode of 2023, Riley Taylor interviews Mike Neglia in Seattle, Washington about how preaching is a bidirectional act of love, love towards God and love towards people, why pastors should aspire to be “normal people” full of hospitable practices, attentiveness towards their cities and congregations and self-awareness, and they speculate about John Calvin's enneagram number!  “Without knowledge of self, there is no knowledge of God. Our wisdom, insofar as it ought to be deemed true and solid wisdom, consists almost entirely of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves. But as these are connected by many ties, it is not easy to determine which of the two precedes and gives birth to the other.” - John Calvin  Recommended Episodes:  Riley Taylor's groundbreaking and exemplary message on homiletics: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2018/8/14/episode-8-seven-lessons-on-homiletics  Mike Neglia on Christ Centred Preaching: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/5/10/preaching-gospel-centered-sermons-mike-neglia  Jon Tyson: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2021/12/21/theology-that-cannot-be-dismissed-power-that-cannot-be-denied-jon-tyson Bryan Chapell: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/9/13/pulpit-flourish-vs-pastoral-care-with-bryan-chappell  For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com  The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches.
