Description

Grump Up The Volume is about revisiting and affectionately roasting some of the weirder musical phases that have occurred, for better or worse, in our preferred eras of Rock And/Or Roll music (we’ll say from the late 60s up to right now). Sometimes we rip apart shitty records by bands we like. Sometimes we try and posit that maybe strange musical trends people would rather forget about were actually kinda cool. But mostly the former. Because we’re terrible people who draw joy from the mistakes of others.

Like the rest of the world, the two Grumps find themselves in lock down, and resultingly engage in a bit of a catch up via Skype. What began as a general chat about  our lockdown listening and viewing (by way of a dissection of Danzig's "Verotika") soon takes a less light hearted turn as Bushie discusses his experience of both personally and professionally dealing with Covid 19, and the two debate wether  or not extreme music and its' associated genre tropes are in fact of any value in the current climate. Please head to http://grumpupthevolume.com for full list of recommendations and links from this episode.

Better late than never, the two boyos celebrate the 25th anniversary of Nirvana's "In Utero" because, well, frankly because it's a collective favourite album and we fucking felt like it. Yes, we worked our by now traditional mention of David Yow in there too, fret not.

Nope, we’re not lampooning anyone (well, bar John Cage) in this episode. This time around we pay our respects to the late great Glenn Branca, and discuss both his own work and his place in the wider scheme of things. The original plan was a family tree but really, it’s more of a bird’s nest, taking in Theatre, Guitar Composition, Neutral Records, the Brian Eno/Mr Burns parallell, and Waterford’s top teenage Sonic Youth based dance routine.
