Join CYHusker, Ryan, and Austin as they dive into the current state of Iowa State basketball, recapping last week's action (including the Kansas debacle) and previewing the next two games on the schedule. A smattering of Cyclone football was also discussed, including players who enrolled early and whether or not Brock Purdy is a thic Joe Burrow. The CFP National Title Game, the Bachelor, major league baseball, and other current events were discussed as well. If you can't get enough of the champagne crisis, Joe Burrow smoking a cigar post-game, or Kendrick Perkins going scorched earth on Kevin Durant, then this podcast is for you. Finally, the gang gets serious for a moment to discuss some of the recent radio happenings here in the Des Moines area.
Iowa State has been selected to the Camping World Bowl. Matthias and Grant take a quick stab at what this means for Iowa State. Notre Dame is a good team and it is going to be a big time opportunity for a big win to cap off the 2019 season. Grant also gives his quick run down of the College Football Playoff and who is going to win. Also Jow Burrow could have been a Cyclone? That and more on this week's Litecast!

We are back with another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. On this week's episode we quickly dive into the Kansas game and what may be wrong with the defense, if anything. They have played well defensively for most of the season but there have been some glaring instances that make your scratch your head.To wrap up the podcast we tackle Thanksgiving. What are some of the worst foods? What are some of the best foods. Take a listen and share some of your thoughts. Jake does get roasted a bit for some of his food takes. So join in on that. Thanks to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill and as always thank you for listening.
We are back with another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. On this week's episode Matt, Matthias and Grant discuss the Texas game and Connor Assalley's game winning kick. Brock Purdy continues his assault on the Iowa State record books and the guys think that we are really spoiled right now and we should just sit back and enjoy it.Kansas is coming to town for senior night. What is a senior night like? Grant explains what his senior night was like. (Spoiler it was one of the biggest upsets in Iowa State history) Les Miles makes his Jack Trice Stadium debut and the guys don't think it matter much!As always, thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill. Make sure you stop down there after the game on Saturday and tell them that we sent you!
Xavier Foster has committed to Iowa State! To the delight of many Cyclone fans, Iowa State has finally landed one of the big fish in Iowa recruiting. The four star prospect from Osklaoosa chose the Cyclones over Iowa early Monday morning. Matt, Matthias and Grant dive into this right away on the podcast. In football the Cyclones fell short in Norman after failing to convert a 2pt conversion at the end of the game. Oklahoma came away with the win 42-41 stalling the Cyclone comeback effort. What went wrong early on for Iowa State and what allowed the Cyclones to comeback?Texas finally has to come to Iowa for a late November game. Many of us wish it was for higher stakes but nonetheless this is a big one for the Cyclones. How does Iowa State stop the longhorns and can they overcome some of the issues that have plagued them this season and come away with a win.As always thank you to Es Tas Bar and Grill of their loyal sponsorship of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast.
We are back with another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. Jake, Matthias and Grant are back on this week with a throw down early on. Jake a notable kicker hater and Grant the former Iowa State kicker go toe to toe on the Iowa State kicking situation. Which some may say is a bit dicey right now. Connor Assalley shanked an extra point and Brayden Narveson missed two field goals. A game this season will come down to a kick in one way or another and right now many of us can't trust what Iowa State has at the kicker position. What can be done to fix it?Breece Hall had another explosive game. Rushing for 183 yards and two touchdowns. He also added in three receptions for 75 yards against Texas Tech. The Iowa State offense finally does not have to rely on Brock Purdy's legs to generate a ground attack. The guys think this is probably for the best. While Brock Purdy can be lethal on the ground, it may not be something that has to be used anymore. Unless it is deemed necessary. The guys also talk about how Brock Purdy has quietly put up big numbers and is currently the nations 5th best in terms of passing yards. The emergence of Breece Hall has quieted the noise surrounding Brock Purdy. That may end up being a great thing for this Iowa State team going forward. Finally the guys look ahead to Oklahoma State. They are pretty confident in this one. Oklahoma State is struggling in a lot of areas right now and the matchup is pretty favorable for Iowa State.Thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill and we hope you enjoy this weeks episode.
Jake, Matthias and Grant review what was the big win down in Morgantown. The Cyclones came away with a 38-14 win over the Mountaineers on Saturday. It was the Breece Hall breakout game and the true freshman looks like he may have a stranglehold on the feature back spot. Jake and Grant want Breece to put it together two weeks in a row before giving it to him entirely. Brock Purdy wasn't lights out like he was against TCU and he didn't need to be thanks to the Iowa State rushing attack. This will allow Purdy to be himself and play within the offense and not shoulder the entire offense the rest of the way this season.Naturally with Grant Mahoney the guys talk kickers. Brayden Narveson drilled a 46 yard field goal on Saturday to give Iowa State a 10 point lead at the time. Is there are reason to use two kickers or should we find a way to narrow it down to one guy. Grant was in a similar position during his Iowa State playing days. The guys quickly preview Taco Tech. As the Red Raiders have been trending up since their game against Oklahoma. This game looked like it may be an easy one a couple weeks back, now has the makings for a tough one in Lubbock. The Cyclone offense will have to come out of the gate fast and avoid another slow start.Thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill.
Matt, Matthias, Jake and Grant are back for another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. The guys recap what was an eventful game for the Cyclones on Saturday as Iowa State defeated TCU 42-24.Brock Purdy once again played lights out leading Iowa State all afternoon, but the offensive line was another big reason. Josh Knipfel and Bryce Meeker were recognized by Pro Football Focus and placed on their national team of the week. Matthias wants to warn everyone once again to take PFF grades lightly. Thought the improvement from Bryce Meeker was a great sign for the offensive line.West Virginia is not the high powered team that we have been used to seeing in years past. The Oklahoma transfer Austin Kendall is now in at quarterback and has been a bit turnover prone so far this season. This may be another opportunity for the Cyclone defense to get the turnover belt out.To wrap up the show, Grant talks about being intimidated by Von Miller and Ndamukong Suh. Von Miller did it on purpose and Suh just used his skill to make a plan. This story will be one for Cyclone fans to enjoy. As always thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill. We hope you enjoy the show.
Matthias, Jake and Grant are back with another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. This week the guys talk about the Baylor heatwave and what went wrong for the Cyclones down in Waco.3rd down defense continues to be the talk of the Cyclone faithful as the Iowa State defense has struggled big time in that phase. The defensive line is not generating the same pressure that we have seen the last two seasons and it is putting a ton of pressure on the back end of the defense. Now with Jaquan Bailey may be lost for a bit due to injury, where does the defense go from here?Iowa State's offense showed up late in the game on Saturday after going down 20-0 before roaring back to take the lead late. Baylor came back and won the game on a field goal. Brock Purdy played poorly for three quarters and it put Iowa State in a major bind. What does Iowa State need to do better to avoid that situation again?TCU comes to town on Saturday and it is looking like it will be another defensive battle. The offensive line will have to play well once again because TCU's front seven is very good. The Cyclones will have to find a way to put pressure on Max Duggan and force him into freshman mistakes. The Cyclones will have a great shot at getting to 3-2 on Saturday but the details will matter once again.Once again, thank you for listening and thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill.
Grant Mahoney makes his Wide Right Natty Litecast debut and he will be joining the show full time as the season goes on. Grant and Matthias discuss the soggy Cy-Hawk game and all that went down on Saturday. Obviously it is not the outcome Cyclone fans wanted but there were a ton of positives to come from it.One of the biggest things that stuck out was the improvement of the offensive line from the UNI game to Saturday. The line was able to create space in the run game and give plenty of time for Brock Purdy in the pocket. The one thing that the guys think the offense lacks is the ability to send the ending haymaker. Obviously most of the skill players for the Iowa State offense are young and that will come over time but it will need to develop sooner than later as the team approaches Big 12 play. Not much went wrong for the defense as they were sound as usual. A few plays were missed including the dropped interception in the end zone late in the 4th quarter. It goes to show that one play can significantly determine an outcome. Speaking of one play, the punt return that sealed the deal for Iowa was discussed. While it was a bad play, it is something that the guys guarantee won't be happening again. Especially with Matt Campbell bringing up special teams in the post game.As always thank you for listening and thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill.
On this week's Wide Right and Natty Litecast we are joined by former WRNL contributor and current Cyclonefanatic contributor Jay Jordan to discuss the upcoming Cy-Hawk game. College Gameday will be in Ames for the first time ever and it will the first time the rivalry gets put onto the national scene. It will be a big day for both programs and the entire state.Matthias, Matt, Jake and Jay discuss what Iowa State is going to have to do to limit the Iowa defense and allow the Cyclone attack some success on Saturday. Last year was tough sledding on the offensive side of the ball in Iowa City and the offensive line was a big reason for that. This year they will be one of the keys to the game for Iowa State. Make no mistake about it, Iowa State's offensive line will be busy. Especially with a talent like A.J.  Epenesa lining up on the opposite site. The Cyclone defense will be able to match up very well with the Hawkeye offense. Though there is a lot of improvement from quarterback Nate Stanley and the receiver group for the Hawkeyes. Jay wants the Cyclone defense to pin their ears back and force the Iowa offense into long yardage situations and essentially put the game in Nate Stanley's hands. Finally as we wrap up this week's episode, Jay was wondering what they hype of College Gameday might do for the team. Obviously we all know that Matt Campbell runs a pretty tight ship but this type of atmosphere is a different type of animal. They guys do come to an agreement that it ultimately wont be an issue as Iowa will be facing some of the similar situations. We hope you enjoy this episode and as always thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill.
Northern Iowa Recap

Northern Iowa Recap

2019-09-0459:01

Iowa State started the season 1-0 with an interesting win to say the least against Northern Iowa. Matt, Jake and Matthias dove in to what was the triple overtime thriller inside Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday. Iowa State was unable to finish some drives with touchdowns and some self inflicted wounds should be easily corrected. There should be some correctable mistakes for Matt Campbell to fix before the big Cy-Hawk showdown in two weeks.Matt went back and watched the game on Sunday to ease his mind a bit. He found a few things that were very positive that should go a long ways towards a successful season. Matthias also things the run blocking trumped the pass protection for the first time and the Cyclones will have to get creative with pass protection against Iowa. Most of us during the game were rather worried, but looking back on it now we don't think it spells doom for the Cyclones.Once again we are back with the "Here Comes The Money" segment. Among the games this week are Texas and LSU as well as North Carolina and Miami. We also quickly dive into the NFL season starting up this Thursday. So stay tuned for that.As always, thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill. We hope you enjoy the show!

Northern Iowa Preview

Football season is finally upon us and contrary to popular belief there is indeed a football game this weekend! Matthias, Matt and Jake are back for another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. On this week's episode the guys dive into Northern Iowa and what we may expect on Saturday morning. Most expect Iowa State to come out and not show too much before the Iowa game in two weeks. How will Iowa State accomplish that while holding Northern Iowa at bay and keeping the Panthers from getting an upper hand early on? Matt thinks one of the keys will be keeping redshirt freshman Will McElvain uncomfortable all day long. This will be a tough first start for the former Des Moines Lincoln standout. There will be plenty of things for Iowa State to figure out in this one and Northern Iowa always brings it's best effort when they make the trip to Ames. The offense will be a key as they try to avoid a slow start once again this season. Brock Purdy and the run game will be a key in avoiding that as the season begins. Northern Iowa returns some playmakers on defense that will give the Iowa State offense an opportunity to grow on Saturday. Be sure to stay tuned to the end for the new "Here Comes the Money" segment as we dive into three games weekly and what we will bet on the Vegas lines. As always thank you for listening to the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. Thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill.
The Litecast is back this week once again with Matthias and Levi. On this week's episode the guys discuss a new twitter feud that started up on Monday with Northwestern after the AP poll was released that morning. Iowa State came into the poll ranked #21, this marks the first time Iowa State has been ranked in the preseason poll since 1978.A topic of discussion for much of the summer has been the potential for College Gameday making it's first trip to Ames. Fueling the conversation once again is the heavy possibility of a ranked Cy-Hawk matchup. Iowa starts the season ranked one spot in front of Iowa State at 21. There will be some tough competition to beat out to get ESPN to Ames for the Saturday morning show. The leadup to the season has been full of hype for fans but the news out of camp has been rather slow. This has it's perks as Iowa State knows what they have going into the season. It just leaves the fan base wanting more. This is primarily a positive thing. To wrap up the episode. We introduce a new weekly segment that will happen all season long. "Here Comes The Money", now that sports gambling is legal in the state of Iowa, we will go over a few games each week and what we think our bets are going to be for each game. Up first this week is the matchup between Florida and Miami.
On this week's episode of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast, Matthias is joined by Geoff Mitchell of Horned Frog Blitz of 247Sports. TCU is one of the teams that is picked along Iowa State to make a run at the Big 12 title game. Coming off a 7-6 season Geoff points out that TCU's season is riding on the quarterback play and who Gary Patterson may choose to lead the offense. He also states that this years Horned Frog defense has the potential to be one of the best under Patterson. Which is a scary thought to Matthias. The race in the Big 12 seems to be wide open under Oklahoma. Both Matthias and Geoff aren't completely sold on Texas being the clear cut #2 team as most of that national media pegs them to be. Matthias thinks that Oklahoma State could be a darkhorse in the race as well when it is all said and done.As always, thanks for listening and thank you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill. We hope you enjoy the podcast!
We are back for another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. Matthias and Matt were joined this week by Derek Duke of Heartland College Sports. Derek has recently begun covering Iowa State and has done a phenomenal job covering the Cyclones. We get in depth on all things Iowa State recruiting and how he goes about covering Matt Campbell's efforts on the recruiting trail. The guys dove in on how they thought the Big 12 season was going to play out. Derek believes that Texas is indeed back and will find themselves in the Big 12 title game. There also may be a chance that Iowa State and Texas both find themselves in Arlington for the title game with Oklahoma looking on from the outside. Derek is fully on the Breece Hall hype train and has seen him play against the best of the best at the All American Bowl in San Antonio this past year.We wrap things up with a few twitter questions and one really whacky question for Derek that has been passed on to us from our friends at Burnt Orange Nation. Derek has now been fully welcomed into the Wide Right Natty Lite crew by answering this question. So stay tuned to end for that.As always thanks for listening. Also a big shoutout to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill. Be sure to stop in anytime you are in Ames!
We are back for another edition of the Wide Right Natty Litecast! This week Matthias is joined by Jake after both survived the first annual Actually Helping Farmer's Golf Outing. Steve Prohm now has a beard and the guys find it magnificent! Matthias hopes that Coach Prohm keeps it forever.Iowa State picked up a big time recruit over the weekend, Daniel Jackson a wide receiver from Texas is Iowa State's second highest recruit in the class and it sounds like Hunter Dekker is going to get a ratings boost that could make him Iowa State's highest rated recruit. To round out the podcast, Matthias and Jake took some fan questions from twitter. Fans wanted to know if all five running backs would play and if Re-Al Mitchell will take some snaps at quarterback or wide receiver. Also as a PSA, do not go to the Area 51 raid because it is a government set up.
Matthias was joined by Levi for this week's edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. On this week's episode the guys briefly discussed Tyrese Haliburton's final showing on the FIBA U19 World Cup and what that may mean going forward for Iowa State Basketball. Late last week Iowa State released their non conference schedule for next season. Levi remains confused about the Oregon State series. The Beavers who have been historically bad basketball program is now a home and home series for Iowa State over the course of the next two seasons. The Cyclones will also participate in the Battle For Atlantis tournament where they will once again face some stiff competition. To wrap up this week's show Matthias and Levi dove into an over/under segment going game by game on percentage changes for Iowa State in each football game next season. ESPN released their FPI earlier on Monday and Iowa State has greater than a 50/50 chance in 10 of the 12 games next season. Let's see if you guys can guess along with Levi as he navigates his way through the schedule. As always thanks for listening to the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. Once again thank you to our loyal sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill.
Matthias and Jake are back for another edition of the Wide Right Natty Litecast. One this week's episode the guy's talk the plethora of former Cyclones that will be on NBA rosters or participating in the summer league this year. Matt Thomas signed a 3-year deal with the Toronto Raptors to start this week off and will have a great opportunity to make some noise in the NBA. Matthias asked Jake is Cameron Lard would find a way to stick with the Orlando Magic and Jake thinks it may be hard with all the big men they seem to stash.Tyrese Haliburton is making some noise in Greece with the United State FIBA team. What does this mean for his future at Iowa State? Will he propel himself into a first round NBA pick after next season? Matthias is selfish and hopes that he stays for four years but right now that looks like a stretch. Finally Jake is asked what he will give up for an Iowa State Sugar Bowl appearance and he has a hard time pinpointing what that may be. We thank you for listening to this week's episode and we hope you enjoy it. Thanks you to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill!
Matt and Matthias are back for another edition of the Wide Right and Natty Litecast. This week the guys dabbled in a big football recruiting week thus far. Matt Campbell snagged four commitments to start off the week and many of the players are looking to be major impact players for the Cyclones. What does it mean that they are taking two quarterbacks once again in the same class? Matthias has a theory on that as well and what it may mean for this year with the use of Re-Al Mitchell.Later on in the show a discussion arose about the current state of the MLB All-Star game and how the voting system is tailored towards the bigger market teams. The Twins being one of the best teams in baseball may not get some of their deserving players to even start the game. While the Yankees have Aaron Judge not putting up nearly the stats after missing games and will probably start. Matt has a plan that may fix that going forward. The show ended with what Matt and Matthias would sacrifice for Iowa State to win the Sugar Bowl. A bus full of children and a box full of puppies may be in some trouble going forward. As always thanks to our sponsor Es Tas Bar and Grill and we hope you enjoy the show!
