What does the future of work and learning look like? What do you need to know to prepare?According to Dr. Michelle Weise, “for the future of work, we are all going to have to be very skilled problem solvers and system thinkers” and “that really does require a different approach on the part of higher-ed institutions in cultivating those kinds of learners.” Michelle’s work focuses on the bottom 25% of income earners and what needs to change to help them to overcome barriers that prevent them from achieving academic and career success. One of the largest barriers Michelle describes is solving for time and lack of funds. We talk about the role of A.I's role:Helping to bridge the gap for employers to understand if a potential employee has the skill set they need. Helping employees to feel confident that the education or training that they are pursuing will lead to work.Right now, we are teaching in silos. Things will need to become more interdisciplinary. Michelle provides examples of organizations that are doing it well.Refer this podcast to:Anyone struggling to move forward in their careerAnyone needing free resources to up-skillHigher Ed | Career Planners/Counselors/Academic AdvisorsCollege Planners/CounselorsEmployersJoin Our Podcast Email List!   Follow Our Podcast:Website: Listen To Our Podcast HereYouTube Channel   Twitter   LinkedIn  Facebook   InstagramAll Things College and CareerMeg's LinkedIn   Bobbie's LinkedInACADEMIC & CAREER ADVISING SERVICES:Visit Website:  Academic and Career Advising ServicesSchedule an Appointment with Academic & Career Advising ServicesEmail Meg:  meg@academicandcareeradvisingservices.comMusic Production by Lena Ozea:  Lena Ozea Sound CloudTechnical Production:  Richard BarnettIntroduction by Patricia WalshSHOW NOTES:Buy Michelle’s Book on Amazon:  Long Life Learning:  Preparing for Jobs that Don't Even Exist YetFollow Michelle on Twitter:  @rwmichelleFollow Michelle on LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/rwmichelle/Visit Michelle’s Website:  https://www.riseanddesign.io/Michelle collaborated with Clayton M. If you are average, you will change jobs like 14 times.Technical skill will get you that first job. But those who pivot, advance, and move into leadership positions are more likely to have… a strong foundation in the humanities. Wow. But it is STEM studies that have higher perceived value.Lecturers Molly Campbell and Krista Jackman think the humanities have a PR problem. “People think, ‘Oh, that career path doesn’t have one particular outcome.’ People are saying that like that’s a flaw when it’s actually the whole point, to prepare you for a wide variety of careers.”In response, they pitched the Mellon Foundation. Now, they elevate the impact of the humanities in their community and have “very fuuuuuuull calendars.” Their six HUGEmanities initiatives are changing the way people see, and assign value to, the liberal arts.Refer this podcast to:A grant funded researcherEnglish, psychology, history, art history, the classics, philosophy, theology, anthropology or theatre majorsSomeone in salesAfter listening to this podcast, Academic and Career Advising Services can help you explore colleges like the University of New Hampshire or help you get the most from your liberal arts degree, just like Molly and Krista.Join Our Podcast Email List!   Follow Our Podcast:Website: Listen To Our Podcast HereYouTube Channel   Twitter   LinkedIn  Facebook   InstagramAll Things College and CareerMeg's LinkedIn   Bobbie's LinkedInACADEMIC & CAREER ADVISING SERVICES:Visit Website:  Academic and Career Advising ServicesSchedule an Appointment with Academic & Career Advising ServicesEmail Meg:  meg@academicandcareeradvisingservices.comMusic Production by Lena Ozea:  Lena Ozea Sound CloudTechnical Production:  Richard BarnettShow Notes:Email Krista & Molly:  hugemanities.project@unh.edu HUGEmanities WebsiteUniversity of New Hampshire | UNHCommunity College System of New Hampshire | CCSNH
WARNING: This is not your parent’s career advice. This is Gen Z-er, Justin Nguyen’s, careers-for-peers approach that has 18, 19 and 20-year old's binge-listening his podcast and contributing crowdsourced, real-time data for young job hunters. He leads from experience. After college-age, Justin sent out a fruitless pile of internship applications, he discovered, over a dish of ice cream, that the real path to Fortune 500 internships is networking.  Then he landed three of them. While prestigious internships look amazing on a LinkedIn profile, sleepy data points alone do not produce job offers. Justin recommends something else, something much easier, to add to LinkedIn that really opens the doors of career opportunity.Justin is the founder of GetChoGrindUp, a movement to help students navigate their way through college.  He is also the host of an iTunes top 100 podcast, Declassified College Podcast (on Apple).Forward this podcast to:·         A college student following a parent’s dream·         Career-hunter using LinkedInJoin Our Podcast Email List!   Follow Our Podcast:Website: Listen To Our Podcast HereYouTube Channel   Twitter   LinkedIn  Facebook   InstagramAll Things College and CareerMeg's LinkedIn   Bobbie's LinkedInACADEMIC & CAREER ADVISING SERVICES:Visit Website:  Academic and Career Advising ServicesSchedule an Appointment with Academic & Career Advising ServicesEmail Meg:  meg@academicandcareeradvisingservices.comMusic Production by Lena Ozea:  Lena Ozea Sound CloudTechnical Production:  Richard BarnettShow NotesFollow Justin on LinkedIn (or reach out to him)GetChoGrindUpDeclassified College Podcast (on Apple)University of TampaUniversity of Central FloridaGary VaynerchukMr. Beast YouTube ChannelColin and SamirImmigration Nation Trailer on Netflix<
