Here to promote ZotFest, the upcoming student film festival here at UCI, it's fest director Gary Giannoni and tech director/friend-of-the-show Thoren Jorgensen! We talked about the unconventional format of putting together a socially distanced virtual film festival in the COVID era and a whole mess of other topics. Remember: Submission deadline is May 17th and you can apply even if you're not in the FMS department. DO EEEEEEEET!!!!
Episode 35: Guess Who

Episode 35: Guess Who

2020-05-01--:--

Here's a twist for ya: IT'S ANDREW WESTON!!!!
It's the 34th Episode, folks! Here's some fun facts about the #34: There are 34 islands in the Mediterranean! The element selenium has an atomic number of 34! The number "200" appears 34 times in the bible! I know- crazy, right? Also this week, I interviewed hosts of political talk show, "La Conversacion," right here at KUCI, Sebastian Silva and Isaac Ceja. It was a hoot!
Talk about a milestone! The show's first ever guest, Richard Dulay, makes his triumphant return to promote his new track, "Fears 2.0," and teases an upcoming album. Pretty exciting stuff, right? We talked about the inspiration for this new track, the pros and cons of being an artist in the era of COVID, and also the illuminati. But mostly the first two things. Remember to follow Richard on Soundcloud at DBAR and YouTube at DBAR Music! Link to "Fears 2.0": https://soundcloud.com/dontbearichard/dbar-fears-20
Covid? I hardly KNOW Vid! HEYOOOOOO! AND WE ARE BACK, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Station shut down for a few weeks in light of recent developments and is technically still closed to all DJ's BUT at least I've got Zoom and my handy-dandy portable microphone, so the show will continue to go on, baybeh. Also sorry for making those "coronavirus survival tips" jokes on the show a few episodes ago. Gotta eat some crow on that. Guess this was just a bit more serious than I initially anticipated. Whoopsie-daisy. Regardless, enjoy the return of "Half Past Five"!
Honestly I don't even know what to say this time. Oof.
Awwwwwww yeah bruddah, it's Episode 30!!! To ring in this special occasion, I sat down with UCI Professor and Media Historian, Lucas Hilderbrand. We discussed his book, "Inherent Vice: Bootleg Histories of Videotape and Copyright," which covers the broader effects of the specific focus of bootleg home-video and the first "renaissance" of sorts of the pornography in the '70s and '80s. Enjoy, people!
It's part 2! Not sure what more to say that I didn't already say in the previous episode's bio, but... Show's good! Listen to it!
Heya folks, it's another Baer! This one of the Brett variety! Brett Baer is an Emmy award-winning television writer and producer, known for his work on hit shows like "New Girl," "30 Rock," and "The United States of Tara." In part one of my interview with him, we talked about the early days of his career and his breaking into the industry through the world of animation, as well as the ethical ups and downs of "woke" culture on contemporary comedy. Give the thing a listen!
MORE SHOW, YOU GUYS! This week, I interviewed returning guest Sara Rodriguez and Darby Vickers, creators of the podcast, "Odyssey & Chill." We talked a whole bunch about Homer's "The Odyssey" and Greek Mythology- two things I should know much more about than I do. So it'll be as much a learning experience for you guys as it was for me! Fun Fact: The interview both opens and closes with me saying "Thank you guys so much for coming on the show", Sara replying, "Thanks for having us", then me saying, "Much appreciated." CRAZY, RIGHT?!
We back with our first normal, prerecorded interview again and, boy howdy, is it a DOOZY! I sat down with actor, Derick Gonzalez, to discuss his commitment to his craft, the tribulations that come with being an actor in the latinx community, and we did some silly voices. It was a hoot! Enjoy...
Who's got two thumbs and is back from the holidays with another live episode??? THIS GUY BAYBEH! Also Andrew Weston is here. We talked about "Cats" and, as always, Andrew shared a plethora of bad opinions which I chastised him for. Enjoy!
With 2019 coming to a close, I look back at my year and my time at the station and then quickly fall into a nightmarish pit of anxiety for the future. Maybe my good friends here at KUCI can yank me out of that rut? Let's find out! Also Glenn's a republican now I guess? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
WE BACK! AND BY "WE" I MEAN "ME"... Me back... AND BETTER THAN EVER BABY. Say "hello" to Andrew Weston, host of "And the Oscar Goes to..." right here at KUCI. We talk our favorite films of 2019 as it nears its close and Andrew drops terrible takes left and right. Check it out!
This week, Paxton and UCI Professor/Sports Media Scholar Victoria Johnson discussed Victoria's upcoming book, "Sports TV," which takes a sweeping look at the history of sports on television, as well as its cultural, political, and technological impact. Also, the inspiring story of a radio announcer guy who overcame the odds and proved to the world that he wasn't ready to go out without a fight. Truly the "Rudy" of public radio. You won't wanna miss this one, folks.
I SMELL A MURDER MYSTERY! Or is that just corpse?... Nope... No, yeah. That's- that's definitely corpse. Oh well, 'tis the season I guess... Hey Thoren's back also and we talked about horror movies to ring in the holiday! Enjoy!
DO YOU WANT THE FUNK?! DO YOU SIMPLY GOT TO HAVE THAT FUNK! WELL HAVE I GOT THE CURE FOR THAT WHICH AILS YOU, SIR OR MADAM! This week, I was joined by a good friend of mine and exceptionally talented musician, Buster Baer: Lead singer of the funk band, Buster. We talked about funk and goofed around a whole bunch. Check it out, buddy!
It's been a long day and I can't think of a silly, long-winded description for this episode. But trust me, it's a good one! Ryan is one talented sunuvagun and you'll see what I mean when you tune in. Remember to scope his YouTube channel at musicalinferno42 for some 10/10 content- including his music which, as always, I cannot play on this podcast for legal reasons. Enjoy!
YEAH buddy. You know what time it is: HALF PAST FIVE, baybeh! WOO! To celebrate my new time slot and a return to titular normalcy, I was fortunate to have on a grade-A guest: The one and only (NOTE: I cannot confirm that he is actually the one and only) Patrick Bornhop! Patrick is an up-and-coming stand-up comic based out of Orange County and is well on his way to taking over the d*ng world. We discussed the transition from the open mic circuit to becoming a full-fledged comic, the bizarre nature of one Jordan Peterson, and the time Patrick bombed a set in front of David Koechner. All that and more on this very special episode of "Half Past Five."
