What I See is NOT Real

What I See is NOT Real

2020-08-0159:29

Episode 26_ “What I See is Not Always What’s Real” We talk about the following:Middle-class upbringing with a step-father with anger issues—developed the notion of the importance of figuring out where you want to go in life. “You don’t come back from combat the same, regardless of what kind of experience you have, it opens your mind to other things. It taught me that what I see is not always what’s real.” James’ real-estate company is formed around helping veterans and active-duty in the JBLM area (south of Seattle) get in and out of the real estate market with ease, and profit. Appearance is only one aspect of who we are, but how can we start looking past appearances? What responsibility to we have when we choose to ‘look’ a certain way? People can manipulate things they say, but now how they act in the moment—that’s the best way to determine a person’s character. It’s so simple to rush to judgement—but it’s almost never true Once we are aware that our ‘look’ might induce trauma responses in other people, what do we do about that? –If at a snapshot you are a trigger to someone, well, how do you calm down a trigger? Have a conversation! Every time! Once you’ve closed yourself off to taking in new information, the conversation is over. “I always ask myself, am I making any assumptions that could stop this conversation from going forward?”  James’ #1 Culture-Hack:  Trust, but verify. Episode 25 “Inclusion IS the multiplier”We talk about the following:Intersectionalities of persona that are created by a different-than-usual-lifeHow Bobby as a black man is trying to focus on how he can work towards racial justice in the work placeHow being forgiven for mistakes when you are young is crucial to young people being able to bounce back and create a better lifeHow to work towards giving everyone the same chance—teach children that they can do anything, bosses that forgive mistakes, teaching everyone to take more chances, hold our mid-level managers accountable for developing their people’s future careers and where they will go. We have to think critically about what gaps we have in our teams, but I think that if a company hasn’t realized that, and only focus on how people look different from each other, they are missing the boat.We should be honest with ourselves and what kinds of people are likely to disagree with us, and then figure out how we will use those disagreements as a multiplier.Leaders, make it comfortable for people to disagree with you.“We have to structure our teams so that inclusion IS the multiplier, inclusion becomes the way we scale.”“The soundbite culture that we have nationally means that we don’t really have robust conversations.”Daniella asks: How can we white people make the world as safe and wonderful for your 5 black sons as it would be for my son (if I had one).Bobby says: When you see our kids, be nice to them. The world is a stage, but it’s also a classroom, so use that. Get to know us, get to know our kids. Be excited for them, the way that you would be for your kids. Don’t be surprised that my son wants to be an astronaut.“Make it safe for my sons to wear a hoody, when they are cold, just like you can.”“It takes a village to raise a child, so let’s be that village.”“Don’t be afraid of our children.”About Our Guest: Bobby Humes currently serves as the Director of the Seattle Department of Human Resources. Episode 22_ “Cult Cultures: Do They Work?” We talk about the following:Working with at risk youth—gangs as ‘culture and belonging’ Listening/Reading books—an education of thinking and growing and learning to question things Books can be a powerful bonding tool, and ‘required reading’ can provide a shared rhetoric for common discussion and culture-creation Famous Cult Cultures: The Marine Corp, Gangs, Zappos, The Children of God, etc. Why they 'work', when they don't, and how to plan for the tipping point. Cult cultures work because they appeal to the basic needs of humans for connection, shared purpose, and community. Whether we set up the proper checkpoints and constant room for growth and learning can determine whether it goes right or wrong. Dave’s #1 Culture-Hack: Books! Books are a blueprint for where a company can go—what companies do you want to model? Carry a good book around everywhere you go, it can be an amazing tool for conversation and discussion. About Our Guest: Dave Burlin is a Marine Corps Veteran, and he believes that influence is the core foundation for growth. His passion is to help people maximize their influence potential so that they can create and lead innovative organizations that make a positive impact on our world. He has worked closely with organizations like Zappos and Simon Sinek Inc., and is inspired by teams that are leading examples of the power of company culture. Dave encourages serial entrepreneurs to maximize their full potential of influence by helping them communicate their vision, and invest in their greatest resource; their people. Creating a culture built on trust and communication allows a team to work and communicate at the highest level, so they can serve more people, and in turn sell more stuff. With growth comes more opportunity for leaders to emerge, and the cycle of leadership and influence continues. Dave has had the honor and privilege to be a TEDx Speaker in 2014, and he has been sharing the concept of #WHYNETWORKING for the last 2 years. He currently serves as a City Leader for Bunker Labs in Las Vegas, NV. Bunker Labs, is a non-profit organization with a focus to help equip, inspire, and connect Veterans and their spouses with resources to start and grow businesses.Dave’s Social MediaLinked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daveburlin/Discharge to Incharge: https://youtu.be/oLfozhW-JQ0 Zappos cover letter: https://youtu.be/MS_dZikEW4M #whynetworking https://youtu.be/6_hXo6BweFU TEDx Tulsa https://youtu.be/0fdTEDcW7Xk Disrupt HR - The Swayze Effect https://disrupthr.co/vimeo-video/the-swayze-effect-when-violence-is-the-answer-dave-burlin-disrupthr-talks/About Our Host: Daniella Mestyanek (Mest-aa-neck) Young is an author, TEDx speaker and Organizational Culture-Hacker with fascinating life story and important insights into culture, socialization and group behavior. Relationship Resonance

Relationship Resonance

2020-06-2043:51

Episode 23 “Relationship Resonance” We talk about the following:As a pharmacist, Doug realized that almost 14% of the new prescriptions for stress come from job strain, and he wanted to do something about that. Doug and Maryanne realized that focusing on relationships was a winning formula, and both have fought in their lives to build the tools to do that. The Hackings built a company to focus on relationships within the workplace that can make the workplace less stressful. Must focus on relationships if you want to escape the socialization and programming that you grew up with. Learning to question everything is a muscle that you have to build, before you can begin building your own way of thinking and making decisions. Not everything is ‘good’ or ‘bad’, it just is. Feelings are not negative or positive—we must allow ourselves to feel feelings. Sadness, and other negative feelings, need to be acknowledged, but not necessarily fixed. We shouldn’t be thinking of running around with a label gun labeling things ‘bad’ so that we can fix them. The hidden conceit behind the idea of ‘doing everything yourself’In order to get trust in a relationship, you have to be seen as competent and warm. Many people spend time flexing their competence, but not developing their warmth. System includes identifying things that are connection-killers and learning how we get rid of them. Processes and Systems. The Hacking’s #1 Culture-Hack: All about leading with your heart, the heart is the multiplier. Without the heart, you can’t get to trust and admiration. Lead with the Heart! Episode 18_ “What’s Your Chaos Tolerance?” How different individuals have different levels of tolerance for chaos and moving through change How a PhD in geography—A story-telling discipline—relates directly to studying corporate culture, another story telling discipline Team-driven people vs. self-driven people. Different culture-types and how leaders can use them to become more skilled at how they handle their people and even larger groups. Dr. Rachel’s book,: iX Leadership BookWe talk about the following: Dr. Rachel’s #1 Culture-Hack: Create more structure, especially right now during COVID-19. It will help to ground everyone on your team. About Our Guest: Dr. Rachel Headley knows how to get things done. She has been in the trenches, dealing with unspoken conversations, barriers to team goals and success, and figuring out how to achieve seemingly impossible goals demanded by executive leadership. As she rose through the ranks at a global satellite mission (from intern to satellite scientist to Operational Science Officer), she managed big projects, united diverse stakeholders, guided teams through change, and led complex and ground-breaking achievements. She believes the internal experience (iX) of an organization is a leadership choice. Whether a leader dials it in or actively designed and supports it, the iX of a company is critical to nearly all measures of success - profit, employee retention, customer satisfaction, and on and on. The hallmark of business today is constant change, which is highly uncomfortable to a large number of our people. Partnering with Meg Manke at the Rose Group Int'l, they developed the critical, new (and practical) iX leadership framework which allows you to actually solve problems in your team, address generational issues, guide people through big changes, and accomplish your most ambitious goals. Rachel is a TEDx speaker and has spoken on stage in front of over 12,000 people (https://youtu.be/dEe4dQcwuCQ). She is also a Forbes Coaches Council contributor, and serves on the Council of Trustees for South Dakota State University. Episode 15_ “Success and Neuro-Diversity in the Workplace” We talk about the following:John’s life journey and his thoughts on success and neuro diversity in the workplace -John struggled in school, turning to drugs and alcohol and spending high school graduation in rehab After college, John had learned to function successfully on the outside, while still covering up internal dysfunction and internal angst and anxiety and a pattern of destructive behaviors. Found a fit at a corporation that was hard-charging, high-stakes and disruptive. After being diagnosed with clinical depression and bipolar disorder, John took a break to work on himself, get sober and medicated. Began to change his management style, became a certified Clifton’s strengths coach, and began to try to help people on his team become their best selves. Great Quotes: “We need to change the way we talk about mental health in the workplace”“There’s no end to self-awareness, it’s a constant journey” John’s #1 Culture-Hack: Hack 1  is keep track every day of how many times you hear somebody say, “Yeah, but” or “Yes, but”, or “However”. Keep track of those, write it down, just make a note. Because when people use those words it gives the listener the impression that you weren’t listening the whole time they were speaking. And so I get a lot of different people at all different levels within the organization, you know, CEOs, managers, HR people, you know, even people on the manufacturing floor that want to have an impact on culture and want to see how we are doing it.” “If I wanted people to just agree and say yes, I would get robots” “A good culture is going to spit out the people that aren't a good add a good fit to that organization. And that's the way it should be. Our retention rate right now is around 96% 96%. People ask us, Hey, are you having a hard time? You know, hiring right now? No!” Matt’s #1 Culture-Hack: My favorite culture hack is probably just the piece about taking action towards your culture goals. Right? Just do something that you know about it, do something about it every single day, every single week. No matter what, how are you moving towards improving your culture, clearly defining your core values, making it better?About Our Guest: Matt Jung is the co-founder and co-CEO of comfort researchMatt’s Social MediaLinked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matt-jung-486a2810/Website: http://comfortresearch.com/ About Our Host: Daniella Mestyanek (Mest-aa-neck) Young is an author, TEDx speaker and Organizational Culture-Hacker with fascinating life story and important insights into culture, socialization and group behavior. Episode 9_ Alcoholics Anonymous, Ironman and ValuesWe talk about the following:SobrietyHow values and purpose in a company need to be done with intentionThe connection between radical adventurism and relationshipsHow the values of Ironman teach you not to judge people on appearanceGood Quotes:“Any day that's moving along, that I'm not on target to where I said I wanted to go. It's usually because I've let somebody break one of those boundaries and knock me off course a little bit.”“And there's like 12 steps couldn't be any more simple than that. Don't drink and go to a meeting. And as simple KPI that I had to follow for a long time, don't drink and go to meeting. And if that doesn't work, don't drink and go to another meeting. And do that for 90 days. And if you're not completely satisfied will return your misery. That's what my sponsor told me. So it's funny that now I work with clients on 90 day rhythms. And you know, we set a three year plan, a one year plan, and then 90 days and at the end of our meetings, I'm like, here's your 90 day plan. Just like my sponsor gave me 30 years ago, and maybe that's a little coincidence. Maybe that's a little God's work, maybe. I don't know”“If I'm clear with where I want to go, if I'm clear with what my values are the rules I'll play by, and I know my purpose in life, and I use those as the filters to making all the decisions, I'm moving forward today.”Kris’ #1 Culture-Hack: Just remember, much like dating, you don't need to attract the whole world with your values.
