Description

The 2 Regular Guys podcast has evolved from Aaron Montgomery and Terry Combs hanging out in hotel bars and restaurants after trade shows, eating chicken wings, disagreeing over ranch or bleu cheese as the true and proper dipping sauce, and talking the garment decorating and personalization industry. A long list of industry friends joined into those conversations over the years, in cities across America and the world. These same friends plus new friends we meet along the way now come back to join us as guests to the program. The trade shows continue, the industry grows and matures, and the 2 Regular Guys continue those conversations, talking garment and product decorating (and on occasion beer and chicken wings) weekly. Welcome to our 8th Year. Come along for the ride!

What do we usually see in decoration and what would you want to see?Erich: I’ve seen so many amazing pieces of yours that take a creative bent, and I notice that many of them include applique and multimedia. Why do you like applique so much as a medium? Can we talk about your favorite fabric types, what do you use and why?Erich: As a digitizer, I can’t help but want to discuss interpretation; we’ve talked a little about making coordinating looks, not just replicating logos, but in the process of embroidery, there’s so much we can do to further change the character of a design, even once we’ve already chosen a medium like applique- let’s talk about the things we can do in that phase- How do you approach specialty stitches and what we can do in digitizing?

Deliver on time. “Don’t tell me it’s the economy.” 3 Aaron: Bundles or package deals. Help them understand what they might not know they need Doesn’t have to include discounting 4 Terry: Sample other products when a customer orders from you. Do you do hats? What’s a product you have available that would be a natural for this end customer? Put one in the box. 5 Aaron: Persistence, Reach out often Find the balance. Don’t want to overwhelm them with pitches, but want to stay top of mind. Requires research, personalization, and a CRM Leave every interaction with an excuse for the next one. 6 Terry: Sample other decoration techniques when a customer orders. 7 Aaron: Gather Feedback OFTEN Your customer's needs and preferences will change, stay on top of it! Don’t just send surveys. Have sit-downs, zoom calls Let them know you care. 8 Terry: Help your customer sell more products. Can you set up a store online for them? Offer referrals to them? 9 Aaron: Redesign your customer policies around your ideal customers What is in it for them? Why is that a policy? Sustainable Solutions Aaron: Welcome in. As you might know, we gave up reading bios a while ago because we would rather learn about you from you. Can you both briefly share a little about yourselves and how you came to the industry? Terry: For Cassie: Can you provide an overview of the current state of sustainability in the apparel industry? o   According to the EPA, the main source of textiles in municipal solid waste (MSW) is discarded clothing, although other smaller sources include furniture, carpets, tires, footwear, and other nondurable goods such as sheets and towels. o   92 million tons of textiles waste is produced every year. Earth.org shares that in America alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste – equivalent to 85% of all textiles – end up in landfills on a yearly basis. O The good: We’re starting to see so many companies make progress: Marine Layer, Everywhere Apparel, Living Ink (making ink out of algae), Allmade, S&S’s Giveback Box program, etc. Aaron: For Gary: From your perspective, what are some common environmental challenges faced by apparel decorators? There are three areas of concern for decorators: The manufacturing process and this includes requirements such as air permits, wastewater discharges, hazardous waste management and OSHA compliance.  The input materials being used and this includes ensuring that customer guidelines are being met with respect to the ingredients. The recent bans and proposed bans on certain chemicals are having a greater influence on the choice of materials.  The finished product and this includes the substrate and the ultimate fate of the finished product.  Terry: For Both: What are some practical steps that apparel decorators can take to reduce their environmental impact without major overhauls? O There are the typical things like replacing all your lightbulbs, recycling and/or reusing boxes and packaging materials, implementing low-flow toilets and sinks, etc. I’ve seen other shops reuse and repurpose their old screens. But shops should also be aware of what products they’re buying and selling to their customers (are they recycled cotton/poly); also notify customers...
Join us on the next episode as Terry and Aaron debate new people coming into the market. With the rise of accessible technology and DIY solutions, the landscape of the crafting and decoration industry is rapidly evolving.  The line becomes more gray and there are concerns from established professionals. Are those concerns justified, or should we embrace the influx of new talent and innovation? From Epson's entry into the DTG market to the impact of "Cricut Moms" on traditional decorators, we'll explore the dynamics of competition, adaptation, and the evolving definition of professionalism in the industry. I call it Jehovah’s Fitness Embracing Innovation or Protecting Tradition? Is there a difference between a crafter and a maker? One source said, “There’s more glue involved in crafting.” Are there distinct categories? Crafter Maker Side gig, part-time business Starting small or part-time with the intention of future full-time business Why do some “professional” decorators fear the “Cricut Mom”? (Let’s not forget the Cricut Warrior) Fear of more competition Your issue isn’t the competition if that’s the case Fear of bottom-feeder pricing from these competitors Muddying the water with sub-par decorating souring the buyers From the vendor perspective - equipment, garments, supplies - what are the drawbacks and benefits? Why the sudden interest from that sector? A whole new group of potential buyers From the vendor side, becoming aware of an untapped market The potential for more hand-holding than with the current customer base How to find them… not from your current customer list What are the benefits to the industry from the crafter/maker? It’s a very simple decoration method Easy to apply and almost any substrate You can apply in a temperature range of 275-325 so manmade fabrics not an issue No dye migration Is there customer resistance to DTF garments? Most of the resistance comes from decorators, not customers Email from a customer this week Why is there so much misinformation on the internet and at shows? Band-Aids Wanting to appear as an expert. Ulterior motives What’s a realistic learning curve to be a DTF decorator? 30-90 days Talk to us about proper environment. Just like DTG, 40% humidity and normal office temperature How does DTF work on a DTG printer? Why would someone go this direction? Most machines have a DTF option that reverses the print order and backs off on the amount of ink layed down Nothing to buy other than film and adhesive. You use the same ink for both processes. Why is there white and black adhesive powder? Band-Aid because of process errors What causes blotches in the image after it’s applied?  Moisture on your film. The film coating is made to attract water based ink. It also attracts moisture from the air. What’s the best way to apply DTF transfers? Depending on the fabric, press for 15 seconds at medium pressure Peel and press a second time for 5 seconds, but use fabric or Pellon to soften the image. Is adhesive powder and vapor safe? The adhesive powder – more finely ground but the same adhesive screen printers have been using for decades Fumes can cause eye, skin or respiratory irritation or potentially an allergic reaction for some people Not the great evil that some make it out to be OEKO-TEX Certified Use common sense I was going to ask you about ways to add adhesive and cure single sheet transfers, but we’ll have to wait for the Secret Sauce today for that answer. https://www.youtube.com/embed/4NBhT_125uM?si=ygKXIHmYbleXRlxT The Secret Sauce We serve up bite-sized tips for our #regulators to instantly spice up their deco...

I was a human cannon ball… Until they fired me. 10 Things from 2023 Terry: I’d like to see, I expect to see, trade shows seek their new level. So what does that mean? Trade shows won’t return exactly as before. For good or for bad (if you run a trade show), many typical exhibitors at all or most shows were very successful during COVID without the costs of trade shows. Many of these companies are weighing how much of this expense they’re willing to take on again. This is a conversation or debate taking place at manufacturers, dealers and distributors throughout the industry. Aaron: Mid Range Heat Press. Going from 16×20 to the next level is a massive cost jump. How can you make a mid range size more viable? A 30 x 40 or a 40 x 60 that can still be affordable on the average credit card? Terry: I miss ThreadX (by Printing United) but apparently not financially viable so likely gone for the time being. I’d like to see an online version of ThreadX that is not tied into a business or organization with a profit agenda. I would miss the personal interaction but the speakers were awesome, and the attendee mix as well. Option 2, tie a live event to the Expo in Atlanta either a day or two before or after. This is an idea we’ve kicked around on past shows. Aaron: More Balance. Now back to the high level woo woo stuff that you know and love from me. I get to work with a lot of business owners, and I see us all really siloing our lives. There is the business life about making money. There is the home life, the community. I’d like to see people integrate this more and that starts by really defining our purpose and why. Then operating from that space centrally. Terry: I’m looking forward to innovation and clarity in DTF printing. By innovation, I’m referring to things like single sheet powder application devices. There are some devices but to my knowledge none that will coat a 16×20 sheet yet. By clarity I mean things like, what’s the truth about the adhesive powder? And in general just a better understanding of proper methods and techniques. Aaron: Less Competition. OK, one more woo-woo thing. I know business is set up as a thing you have to win, more market share, and beat the other guy. But I think this drags us away from an abundance mentality that I have found to be crucial to success. We need partnerships, we need collaboration,

Last Year - Planning for 2023 Terry: Do you know your brand? And if you do, is it the brand you want? Here’s what it’s not… Your brand is not your logo Your brand is not “Hey, look at me!” Your brand is not a mission statement So what is your brand? Your brand is your promise Brand is about relationships What can they expect from you? What separates you? Why do you do what you do? Your brand is who you are… who you want to be… who people perceive you to be Aaron: Love that you brought up branding. Clarity on who you are and who you serve is so important. What customers did you enjoy working with? What customers need to go elsewhere When you try to be all things to everybody, you end up being nothing to no one. Erich: Review & Forecast FURTHER OUT than you think you should Terry: In 2023, become an expert at what you do Every expert has a beginning What 1 task or technique would you like to be better at in 2023 Lay out a plan for weekly efforts in that area Reading up on the subject Set aside time to experiment Aaron: Systems Business needs to be a system. Things you can repeat Automate – What are you doing over and over? Stop going it alone. https://osg.link/iworker Erich: Learn to ‘Prune’ & Understand ‘Fitness’ Terry: Plan to become the “go to” decorator in your area… in your marketplace Do good work and deliver on time! This is the true secret to success You can compete with anyone large or small if you do good work… Make it easy to buy from you It’s often not about price Most customers are not professional buyers Innovate – try something new Specialty inks, vinyl, thread, techniques Planning for 2024 Terry: Stop and take a deep sigh of relief. You made it through the worst business interruption in decades. How can we use this experience in 2024 and beyond? What did you learn about you… about your business? Who helped you keep your business afloat? What can you do to show your appreciation, and build on that relationship? Diversify your technology Diversify your customer base Aaron: Sustainability Initiatives: In 2024 the customer’s priorities are changing. Sustainability is no longer a buzz marketing term,
