Sean Cunningham is best known as a producer and director of horror movies, like Friday the 13th, but it is his documentary, The Nurse with the Purple Hair, that is changing how we look at death and dying. In this documentary he curiously lifts the curtain on the reality of hospice care. It is a documentary of love at the end of life. Grab a tissue! Claire and Sean during the interview will have you considering the conversations you need to have with your own loved ones. Great teachers through the ages have taught the importance of facing death as a conscious and sacred event. Reverend Bodhi Be has carried this torch as an end of life leader and innovator globally, as well as for his local Hawaiian community. He is an ordained interfaith minister and teacher in the Sufi lineage. As Founder and Executive Director of Doorway Into Light, his life and teachings encourage us all to “do death better”. Inspired by Ram Dass, a mentor, neighbor and friend; Bodhi Be has turned the business of dying into a sacred and sustainable event. Doorway Into Light is a non-profit organization based in Maui that provides conscious and compassionate care for the dying and their families. What is end of life and the opportunity to change our perspective? Death is a kind of initiation that involves ceremony. It is a right of passage and training for others to be able to face the deaths we all must suffer, large and small. There is a new "you" being born at many life junctures. Ritual provides comfort and support to meet those moments and better understand the soul's journey. Some areas we discuss:  End of care rituals Rituals and initiation Death as an initiation For more information about Sarah Kerr please visit: Website - https://sacreddeathcare.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Sacred.Deathcare/ Join the Dying Your Way conversation on our FaceBook group, search for Dying your Way. VSED - Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking at the end of life, is a legal but controversial topic in many states and countries. Judith Schwarz PhD, RN and Clinical Director with End of Life Choices New York, explains what VSED is and isn’t. Who are the most likely candidates, and who would choose this option? Judith is a researcher, lecturer and author on this topic, and supported many suffering patients and their families to know if this is a viable option at the end of life. This is not to be confused with Medically Assisted Dying and not death by suicide*.  *Please note if this episode prompts thoughts of self-harm, dial 988 in the US or 13 11 14 in Australia for immediate crisis counseling, or your country’s equivalent. In this second Dying Your Way interview with Stephen Jenkinson, he shares with podcast host, Claire O’Berry, his take on the last two years and how in the end, death is the common denominator that we all share. “Death means you no harm. Though it means you. You belong to the ending of your days.” This past palliative care provider, poet and philosopher of our time will have you think … and think again … rewind … replay … rewind and replay … and guaranteed think more deeply about our own natural and inevitable progression toward death. Grief Specialist and counselor Barb Adler reflects on the power of mindfulness as tool to connect and witness feelings, to better support anyone living or dying. Starting as a counselor during the HIV / AIDS epedemic in San Francisco, Barb had to confront her own unresolved grief while learning to be present and in the moment to clients receiving what was then a death sentence. Barb has built on this work to support those living with dementia and those struggling with mental health issues in the aging population. African Americans have historical distrust of the medical community which has an impact on end of life care. They also have rich spiritual connections that have built a strong sense of community as they historically took care of their own during times of loss. How does this translate to the current reality of death and dying in the African American community?  Listen to counsellor and educator Vernon Nickerson passionately share the history and experience from an African American POV that can be learning lessons for us all.  For more information visit: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/vernon-nickerson-41745b1 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheAmericanSchoolcoachSINCE1997/ Join the Dying Your Way conversation on our FaceBook group, search for Dying your Way. In 2020, 700,000 people died of AIDS and 37 million are currently living with AIDS while the Coronavirus pandemic rages on. Listen to Gary Paul Wright, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the African American Office of Gay Concerns, and his husband, Peter Oates, Director of Health Care Services, School of Nursing at Rutgers University speak of the concerns and progress the pandemic has provided to marginalized minority and LBGTQ communities. It comes as no surprise a huge gap exists in end of life care exemplified by the private nursing Peter gave to Lord Spencer the father of Diana, Princess of Wales, and a black, transgender youth dying of AIDS in New Jersey. The quick response and roll out of vaccines for COVID-19 might be the light at the end of the AIDS tunnel.  For more information visit: Website - http://www.aaogc.org/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/gpwaaogc/ Contact - aaogcnewark@gmail.com Join the Dying Your Way conversation on our FaceBook group, search for Dying your Way. When it comes to end of life issues, few are as controversial as allowing an individual to choose to end their own life legally. Gabrielle Elise Jimenez is an author, Hospice Nurse and End of Life Doula who has been at the bedside with many terminal patients who choose to end their life by their own hand and in their own time, now that it is legal in California. We discuss the many-stepped criteria, the practical steps, the circumstances surrounding patients that get them to this place, and the care for the families who support their decision. Dying Your Way is neither in favor or opposition, but instead we wish to educate ourselves and our audience to the realities of this growing, global, legal option for terminally ill patients. Warning: This subject may be confronting for some. If you have any thoughts of self harm call 13-11-14 AU or 1-800- 273-TALK or your country’s equivalent suicide prevention hotline. Molly Reynolds documents the “story of the story” of an Australian icon, in her award-winning film, My Name is Gulpilil. David Gulpilil is an Aboriginal actor, dancer, artist worthy of the many awards he has received from his Hollywood peers to the Queen of England. Molly captures in her films raw, mesmerizing insights into an indigenous world that has been forced to assimilate while retaining their inherent dignity and wisdom. David Gulpilil has stage 4 lung cancer. This interview was meant to explore cultural sensitivities as it pertains to end of life care. It took me on my own journey of humility and white fragility … my own unexamined assumptions on what is good end of life care.
