This week we had the pleasure of talking to virtual second grade teacher Melisa Hayes. We met Melisa through Barbara Gruener, a former guest and now friend. This inspired us to take a deeper look at the power of these kinds of connections- the ones that aren't in our lives everyday- and in this case, people we've never met in person. The research is really interesting- "weak ties" have the power to uplift and inspire us in so many different ways. We are grateful for our chat with @hayes_melisa! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/holly-lannert/message

With the world putting its pieces back together, we all need to be a part of the puzzle. How do you socially connect with others? Where do you fit in at home, at work, and with friends in terms of power dynamics? Do you spend precious energy putting others on a pedestal? Do you place others above you or create a story about them that may or may not be true? Do you respond to stress by fawning people or situations? Fawning is when we people please to an extreme at the expense of ourselves. You deserve to take up space, you are enough just as you are, your thoughts and feelings matter!  Learn to UPLIFT yourself, your students, and our world. We take time to honor ourselves and our lives here on Earth, just as we are. We end by crafting a word or a phrase to guide us and act as a lens to view and elevate our daily life events. We quote "The Book of Joy" by Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu and mention Russell Brand and his YouTube channel.  You can find us and the tool for this episode on our Twitter page @RISEforeducator and on our Instagram at riseforeducators. This episode introduces 16 social superpowers. Decide which social superpowers you possess, and identify the superpowers of other people in your life. Use this knowledge to boost your social connections and uplevel your social groups. These social powers are adapted from the work of Vanessa Van Edwards and the scienceofpeople.com. Are you a nurturer, listener, balancer, networker, converser, chameleon, empowerer, magnet, storyteller, comedian, presenter, visionary, influencer, solver, decoder, or organizer? Whew, of course, you have many of these traits. Identify your main strengths, but beware of their dark side. Yes, every social superpower has a dark side.  The nurturer that over caretakes and ends up enabling, the group organizer that lacks flexibility and won't go with the flow, the networker that has only surface or superficial relationships. Learn more about these dark sides and your signature strengths in this episode.   Find our tools on Instagram @RISEforeducators and Twitter@RISEforeducator.  Reach out to us at riseforeducators@gmail.com, we would love to hear from you! ~Julie and Holly (SIL's) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/holly-lannert/message
