As we have done for the last couple of weeks, today I am bringing you another replay of a popular episode. In fact, today's episode is THE MOST DOWNLOADED EPISODE out of all of the episodes Ihave done. Today you will hear from my long-time dearest friend in the world, Coach Bob Kuykendall. Bob is an English teacher and Head Wrestling Coach at Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein, Illinois. He and I taught and coached together there right out of college for eleven years. Then I moved to Montana, but Bob stayed at Carmel, and he has spent his entire 42-year career there! In this episode, we talk about a quote that he has used in his English classes and with his wrestling team for most of those 42 years. You're in for a real treat here. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
As I told you last week, over the next few weeks I am bringing you replays of popular episodes. I have some personal and professional matters that are taking up a lot of my time, and I am headed to Mexico on spring break this week, so I thought I would just let you listen to some of the more popular episodes of the show over these next few weeks.Today you will hear one of my absolute favorite episodes. It was episode 31, which was my interview with Alan Stein, Jr. If you don't know who Alan Stein, Jr. is, look him up on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, or check out his website - alansteinjr.com. One of the cool things about Alan's quote is that it was Alan's quote! That's right - the quote that we talked about is his own quote, one that has been very popular with many coaches and teams across the nation. (Check out where the quote is emblazoned on a wall for everyone to see when they visit this place.)Next week, I'll have another replay of a favorite episode. Until then, enjoy my interview from a few years ago with Alan Stein, Jr!For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Today, we are going to start a few weeks of replays of popular episodes. I have some personal and professional matters that are taking up a lot of my time, and I am headed to Mexico on spring break next week, so I thought I would just let you listen to some of the more popular episodes of the show for the next few weeks.Today you will hear the very first episode of the show. Its focus was on one of my favorite quotes throughout my teaching and coaching career. It is also under ten minutes long, as were a lot of the first episodes. The Meaning of Life!

The Meaning of Life!

2024-02-2617:20

This week I talk about a little topic called, "The Meanng of Life"! Yeah, no biggie. Just the biggest topic one could tackle, and I come at it straight on with hard-hitting, journalistic integrity that . . . Okay, I don't do anything like that. But I do have four really good quotes for you that talk about meaning and purpose in life that I think you're going to really like. Enjoy! For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
This week's quote comes to us from an unlikely source. Well, I should say it's an unlikely source, only because I had not heard it until late last week. I was scrolling through my Twitter feed (Arrgghhh! I hate how Twitter sucks me in like that!), and I came across a video of the British actor, Michael Caine. I don't remember who posted the video; I thought it was Brett Ledbetter of "What Drives Winning," but I can't find the video anywhere on their site, so I'm not sure where it came from. No matter where it came from, though, the quote and the idea behind it are outstanding, and I knew the moment I heard it that I needed to talk about it. So, you get it today! For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Today we move on from our episodes on the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team came up with for us to live by this year, and we move to some quotes the are very fitting for us moving into our off-season work to improve. This is a critical time for any team and any individual who wants to be an impactful contributor in the future. You will hear five great quotes that will help you as you move into any time that you are working on improvement for your future. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Today we wrap up our episodes on the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has come up with for us to live by this year. Our first three covenants that I talked about are "Discipline," "Trust," and "Team-First Attitude."Our final covenant is "Respect." I'm so glad my boys chose this as a covenant for a few reasons. One of the reasons I'm so glad is a selfish one—I have never really worked on the theme of Respect with my teams before, nor have I ever written or spoken on it, so it's nice to get a chance to do that. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode about Respect as much as I enjoyed researching, writing, and then speaking about it.For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Today we continue talking about the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has come up with for us to live by this year. Our first covenant that I talked about three weeks ago was "Discipline," and our second covenant that I talked about last week was "Trust." This week we move to one of my all-time favorites - "Team-First Attitude."As a team-sport coach—basketball, soccer, football—for the last 40 years, I have preached the value of a team-first attitude to thousands of kids. It is what I love most about coaching—working to build great teams. Well, you can't have great teams without players who are committed to having a team-first attitude.Today you will hear some ideas on a team-first attitude, and then you will hear 8 outstanding quotes about it.For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Today we continue talking about the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has come up with for us to live by this year. Our first covenant that I talked about two weeks ago was Discipline. Our second covenant that I talk about today is Trust.Trust is an essential ingredient for success for any team. If you don't have trust on a team, you're not going to be a team. That is one of the reasons my boys wanted it as one of our covenants.I have a variety of quotes for you in today's episode, and then I also read some passages out of a great book I am reading right now called, "Organize Your Team Today,"  by Jason Selk and Tom Bartow. They dive into the importance of Trust in Chapter 2 of the book, and there are some excellent ideas for us all to learn from. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Holy cow! This is our 200th episode of the "Great Quotes for Coaches" podcast! In celebration of that milestone, I take you on a little journey of some of the highlights of the podcast. I also have a variety of quotes about Quotes and about Gratitude.Thank you so much to all of you listeners for helping make the podcast so popular. Please tell more people about the podcast, so we can continue to spread the words of inspiration and impact of all of these great quotes to more people. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
I have told you for a while now that I will be talking about quotes dealing with the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has chosen for this season. This week we finally start talking about the specific Core Covenants that my team is working on this year. Our first covenant is Discipline. You will hear 7 quotes on discipline in this episode. For more information on Core Covenants and establishing them with your team, I highly recommend you check out Bruce Brown's booklet called, "First Steps to Creating a Successful Team—Core Covenants" at the Proactive Coaching website. Goals & Goal-Setting

Goals & Goal-Setting

2024-01-0128:15

With last week's episode coming out on Christmas day, I took a little detour from my discussion of covenants, and I talked about quotes that deal with the concept of belief and how powerful our ability to believe in something can be.Well, with today's episode coming out on New Year's Day, I thought it would be fitting to  talk about something that I focus on every year at this time—Goals & Goal-setting. I have been a big believer (the focus of last week's episode!) in the power of setting goals and working to achieve them. And there is no better time than right now for you to establish some goals for the year ahead and then figure out your plan for how you're going to make them happen. You're going to hear 10 quotes in today's episode that will help you and the teams you lead on your road to achieving your goals. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Believe

Believe

I have told you for a while now that I will be talking about quotes dealing with the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has chosen for this season. However, with the day that this episode is coming out being Christmas, I thought I would take a little detour from my discussion of covenants (although covenants play a huge part in the Christian faith!) and talk about quotes that deal with the concept of belief and how powerful our ability to believe in something can be.So today, you will hear 5 quotes about belief and how important it is for us to truly believe in something if we want to be successful at making it happen. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Covenants

Covenants

2023-12-1823:49

I have told you for a while now that I will be talking about quotes dealing with the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has chosen for this season. In last week's episode, I started by explaining the whole concept of what we are trying to do with the establishment of Core Covenants and why we do it. My focus was on how we need to Intentionally Create our Culture. This week we start to talk about a key to how we intentionally create our culture—by establishing and living by our Core Covenants. I talk about the concept in today's episode and then I talk about five quotes that help support the concept. For more information on Core Covenants and establishing them with your team, I highly recommend you check out Bruce Brown's booklet called, "First Steps to Creating a Successful Team—Core Covenants" at the Proactive Coaching website. You can also find a video of the concept there, or you can schedule a speaker to come to your organization to do a presentation on it.For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
The last 3 weeks, I  talked about quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger's new book, "Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life." While there are many more great concepts and ideas in that book, and I recommend you check it out, this week we move on to what I have been saying we would be doing for a while now. I have been telling you that I will be talking about quotes dealing with the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has chosen for this season. In this week's episode, I start by explaining the whole concept of what we are trying to do with the establishment of Core Covenants and why we do it.It's all about intentionally defining the values that are important to you and your organization and then creating your team's culture based on those values. Therefore, today I have some quotes that talk about the importance of values and why we need to intentionally work on and live by them. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Last week, I continued talking about quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger's new book, "Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life."As I told you the last couple of weeks, it is quite good, and it is filled with so many great concepts that I have been reading parts of it to my team. So, I thought I would do the same with you. Today's episode focuses on the concept of recognizing that pain is something that is part of growth, and that most things worthwhile in our development are going to have moments of discomfort and/or pain that we will need to deal with. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Last week, I thought I was going to be talking about quotes that I will be using with my varsity boys' basketball team over the course of our season. The quotes will be based on the Core Covenants that our team has come up with that we feel will establish the identity that we are seeking for our team. However, I hadn't started working through our Core Covenants with our teams because we hadn't finished picking our teams as of last Monday. I thought we might start our Core Covenants last week, but we will start them this week. So last week I talked to you about quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger's new book, "Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life." As I told you last week, while I am only a few chapters into it, it is quite good, and it is filled with so many great concepts that I have actually started reading parts of it to my team. So, I thought I would do the same with you. So last week, this week, and probably next week, you get to hear quotes and ideas from The Terminator!! Today's episode focuses on the concept of putting in the reps to become the best you can be. You have to put in the time and effort to laying a foundation of fundamentals if you want to be able to eventually become someone who innovates and creates and plays or works at a high level. This chapter really nails home some great points for all of us seeking to become our best. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Last week we moved on from our series on Perfectionism and began a new journey. I thought I was going to be talking about quotes that I will be using with my varsity boys' basketball team over the course of our season. The quotes will be based on the Core Covenants that our team has come up with that we feel will establish the identity that we are seeking for our team. I told you that I would be telling you this week what our covenants are, and that I would begin with a quote or a few quotes on the first covenant and then continue in that vein throughout the season. However, last week I went back to Dr. Brene Brown and her book "Daring Greatly." I decided to talk about the entire "Man in the Arena" quote from Teddy Roosevelt from which Brene Brown got that title for her book. That's because I will be using that with my team, too. Also, I had not gotten to our Core Covenants yet with my team, so it was the perfect time to talk about "The Man in the Arena."Well, I still haven't started with our Core Covenants. We are actually doin cuts (Yuck!) and picking our teams tonight. Therefore, we won't start our Core Covenants until later this week or early next week. So today, I have a special treat for you from an unlikely source - Arnold Schwarzenegger! He has a new book out that my step-daughter, Maggie, got me. It's called "Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life." I am only a few chapters into it, but it is so good, and it is filled with so many great concepts that I have actually started reading parts of it to my team. So, I thought I would do the same with you. So for this week and probably next week, you get to hear quotes and ideas from The Terminator!! For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
The Man in the Arena

The Man in the Arena

2023-11-1324:23

Today we move on from our series on Perfectionism and begin a new journey. While it won't be an actual series, over the next few episodes (maybe 4, but maybe more!), I will be talking about quotes that I will be using with my varsity boys' basketball team over the course of our season. As I type that, I realize that this could be a 4-month endeavor, rather than a 4-episode endeavor! What I plan on doing is talking about the quotes I will be talking about with my team over the season. The quotes will be based on the Core Covenants that our team has come up with that we feel will establish the identity that we are seeking for our team. I will tell you what our covenants are next week, and I will begin with a quote or a few quotes on the first covenant. I will then continue in that vein throughout the season.Today, though, I start with a quote that I will be using in a foundational way with our team. I talked about this quote a bit when I was dong quotes on perfectionism by Dr. Brene Brown from her book "Daring Greatly." However, over the course of the first 190 episodes of this podcast, I don't remember ever talking about the entire quote from Teddy Roosevelt from which Brene Brown got that title for her book. The quote is often called, "The Man in the Arena." It is one of the all-time great quotes for those of us in leadership roles, and it is a great way to kick off these episodes I will be doing on my team's Core Covenants. Enjoy! For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Today we wrap up our series on perfectionism with a few quotes that flip around the ideas that many people have of perfectionism. We zero in today on the concepts of worthiness, self-compassion, togetherness, growth & improvement when dealing with perfectionist tendencies in ourselves.Lots of great ideas in here today, especially for those of you who are perfectionists or who teach/coach/parent/lead perfectionists. Help them (or yourselves) see that the goal should not be perfection—the goal is loving yourself enough to realize that you get to grow and improve every single day for the rest of your life. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
