A warrior would not be a warrior without a weapon. Just as a teacher is not a teacher without students, and a chef is not a chef without food to prepare. It's foolish and dangerous to enter into combat with just armor and a shield. These are purely protective defensive components. This shield that Paul’s comparison speaks about was not a small disc but a large, body-length shield called a scuta [skyoo-tah], these were large rectangular shields used by the foot soldiers of the Roman Empire to great effect. Recognizing each of the faces of anger helps to not only dig at the roots of where it lays buried but it allows us to remove the fuel that enflames our anger to more damaging levels.Bitterness is a consequence of a heart that won’t forgive. As followers of Christ, this is where the rubber meets the road. It is the absence of forgiveness that precedes bitterness.The gospel of grace is the only source for true joy and breaking free from bitterness.
