Chase has always had dual passions in wildlife and creativity and as a child they would make films impersonating Steve Irwin! Chase went on to study Zoology at the Universities of Exeter and Calgary, whilst exploring the arts during any spare time they had. They only became aware of the roles and career opportunities in Natural History Filmmaking through the Creative Access Internship Scheme - and soon realised that they wanted to create a flourishing career in this industry. We met just over a year ago when I was working at Wildscreen to help launch their Emerging Talent Scheme and I had sourced Chase as a speaker. I’ve basically ripped off the bio I wrote for them back then for this podcast! Anyway, we followed each on the gram and kinda got to know each that way, we met for dinner ahead of this recording and I now consider them to be a friend.Their top 3 KIRS:1️⃣ Unlearning is just as important as learning2️⃣ Your differences are your greatest strengths3️⃣ Don’t forget to enjoy the viewIntro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
I met Fatima through the amazing Wonder Women in TV mentoring programme where I was lucky enough to be selected as a mentee in 2021 and Fatima was one of the mentors. She delivered a talk for us which was so inspiring that I was compelled to send her an email telling her so. I welled up so many times when she spoke to us mentees because I could really relate to her. She has got to where is today without the bank of mum and dad, having not gone to uni (although I did for free - thanks to a government grant) and she is from a South Asian background - all of these things could have gone against her but she made sure that they didn’t. This is a teaser for Series 5 which I am in the midst of making...it's gonna be a good'un people! 💪🏼💥🙌🏼
I’ve done it again. I have told you that I’ve finished a series, but then I get the opportunity to speak to another fascinating person and I think to myself, I can’t wait until the next series. I need to get them on now! So this is the reason for this bonus episode!James Nguyen is a serial entrepreneur who has previously been featured on global broadcast networks including CNBC, Sky, ABC and has been a contributing writer for Forbes. He is CEO of Inflexion Media - they support companies, brands, and individuals to reach an unlimited audience through powerfully simple content. James has also created this brand - jqn. Here, he is able to distill his experience and lessons about life and business through the beauty of spoken word poetry. His topics range from truths about life, love, and spirituality. He also expounds on first principles from business and entrepreneurship in a collection of poems too.My podcast really does bring some truly fascinating and interesting people my way and James is up there with the best of them! This was probably one of the 'deepest' conversations I've had on my podcast to date. Now, I usually find my own podcast guests. But I did not find James. I was approached and asked if I would like to have James as a guest. When I was told about his background and watched a jqn trailer where I could see him performing snippets of his poetry I thought, “Blimey, what are the chances that this passion project of mine would lead me to finding an entrepreneur of East Asian heritage, who writes spoken word poetry in a similar style to me, is open about the importance of maintaining one’s emotional well being (there’ll be more talk on this later) and owns his own media company?!” How about that for brand alignment?!So, as you can imagine, I was very excited about this opportunity. This really was an ace conversation.James KIRs are:1️⃣ My poetry: It's helped change my world views, break boundaries and shape the way I move through the world as an entrepreneur.2️⃣ My inner work/spirituality: I have a daily practice of trauma and emotional healing work (innovated variation of IFS) as a way to improve my emotional acuity and ensure I don't project unresolved trauma in my life.3️⃣ Surround myself with compassionate candour: I have an inner circle of family and friends that have license to always offer me uncomfortable truths they see as my blindspots, to ensure I don't succumb to a subjective filter bubble.Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme

Shining a light on the next Generation Talent in the broadcast media industry... last episode of this series!Dee Hassan was someone I had interviewed for a Runner role whilst I was working at Icon Films. She was successful during the interview process and started her new position in February this year. I was really impressed by Dee when we first met - she has this quiet determination about her and I just know that whatever else she goes on to do in future, she will be absolutely brilliant at it! Her 'Keeping It Reals' led to a truly wonderful conversation with a young woman who is insightful beyond her years and that's because of her experiences as a Somali woman growing up in Sweden, having moved to the UK when she was 14 years old. Dee's x3 KIRs 1️⃣ Never compromise on your professional values 2️⃣ How can I be of benefit of a project and how can I benefit from it? 3️⃣ Big picture - does the work serve a worthwhile purpose?Links I said I'd share in the episode:https://www.creativeyouthnetwork.org.uk/dee-hassanhttps://www.rifemagazine.co.uk/author/deqa-hassan/https://www.rifemagazine.co.uk/2020/01/who-are-the-silent-voices-in-the-green-movement/13th Documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krfcq5pF8u8Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.com I’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
Stefi Popescu is a Scrum Master for the NOW TV app at Sky. What’s a Scrum Master? Well - it’s the term to describe a person leading a team of software developers, to ask act as a facilitator and coach, a person who enables the team to work in a productive environment and removes any blockers. Stefi leads a team of front-end developers who look after the NOW TV app on TVs and gaming consoles. In addition to that, she is responsible for other management related tasks such as creating personal development plans for her team.Interesting fun fact - Stefi’s hometown in Romania has less people in its population than the number of employees working for Sky - so Sky has around 25,000 employees and Stefi’s home town has a population of just 16,000 in comparison! Her three x3 KIRs are 👇🏼

Charan is now working as a third assistant director at Twickenham Studios...to say getting to this point has been a challenge is an understatement. She did not have the support of her family to pursue a career in TV and film - she used to work in the criminal justice system and spent several years studying for a degree in Criminology and a masters in Criminology and Criminal Justice...Charan risked losing her family to follow her dream and ran away to Prague to study film there...I’m well proud of Charan. She’s done good 😁🙌🏼👍🏼💪🏼...Her x3 KIRs1️⃣ Take a chance on yourself and don’t look back2️⃣ Don’t aspire to make a living, aspire to make a difference3️⃣ Pay it forward...Another brilliant chat with another brilliant person. Barbara Lange is the Executive Director of the Society of Motion Picture Television Engineers aka SMPTE. Founded in 1916, SMPTE is the global professional association that supports the technical framework and professional community which makes quality motion imaging available to consumers in a variety of media formats. She has been in this role since 2010 and in 2015, she led the acquisition of the Hollywood Professional Association - who focus on the application of technology in the creation, distribution and consumption of professional media content. So Barbara is one very cool woman and what makes her even cooler is that earlier this year, she has been honoured by TVB Europe as a 2021 Technology Leader to Watch and was also a recipient of Broadcast and Cable’s 2021 Tech Leadership Award. She shared really personal ‘Keeping It Reals’ with me and for that I am #grateful because we had the most moving conversation as a resultBarbara’s x3 KIRs1️⃣ Her ability to be resilient no matter what2️⃣ Always remembering the death of her mother3️⃣ Working in a ‘man’s world’ inspires her to encourage girls to go fartherI always ask my guests to be as open as possible in the spirit of ‘Keeping It Real’ and Barbara really did bare her soul to meHope you enjoy listening as much I enjoyed talking to Barbara.https://www.smpte.org/Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
Humble Bee Films is an independent production company based in Bristol. In case you’re not familiar with what a production manager does - they oversee the logistics of a TV production - booking travel and accommodation, arranging for equipment to be delivered on shoots, organising contributors, staffing for productions, health and safety on location, clearing rights - basically anything that involves organising. 💁🏻♀️💅🏼 They usually work with a team of production co-ordinators and production management assistants.Production Managers are absolutely ace and an integral member of a TV production team. I was super happy to have secured Elena as a guest because of her impressive CV and the fact that she is of East Asian heritage - I’ve wanted to have someone of this background for ages!Elena’s credits include Attenborough’s Life in Colour 🌱🍃🍂🍁🌳🌍 🌈 which aired on BBC 1 and Netflix and she’s working on a blue chip natural history series for a subscription video on demand service which we can’t talk too much about because she’s under an NDA!Elena has been a production manager for 8 years now for a number of Indies as well as for Aardman Animations. Her top 3 KIRS:1️⃣ Being Kind - to both others and yourself2️⃣ Listening to others (even if you might not agree with them)3️⃣ Being aware of the positive and negative aspects of my heritage and actively applying that to how I learn and grow as a personWe talk about emotional well-being, taking in opposing views to get the big picture and our mutual love for Russell Brand and his podcast. ❤️🎧🎙Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
I met Cathy at an international virtual event for creatives and she was one of the speakers. I was immediately captivated by Cathy’s presence as her good vibes came shining through the ether and warmed me! I know that sounds incredibly cheesy 🧀🧀 but it’s true. And as she was presenting with such charisma and wit, I just kept thinking I need to get this woman on my podcast! And so here she is!Her 3 KIRs:1️⃣ If you’re going to bother doing something that matters to you, do it well, and do it to the best of your ability – every time2️⃣ Find the fine line between self-belief and arrogance3️⃣ Feed your soulThere are parts here where I end up sounding very inarticulate! 🙄😬🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️I refer to Captain America 🦸🏻♂️🤨 instead of Mrs. America (a great BBC drama about the Equal Rights Act in the US back in the 60s/70s - well worth a watch!), I call a painting 🎨🖌🖼 a photo 📸❌😩, I keep tripping over my words and when I start talking about nature 🌱🍃🍂🍁🌳🌍 I just can’t seem to get my words out 😶😐🤭. BUT…it’s not all about me! Cathy is incredibly articulate in it throughout and absolutely wonderful. Eminem stylee; 🎤🎶🎵🎼 Guess who’s back? Back again? Uschi’s back, tell a friend!Uschi used to be my counsellor and I think she would be mortified that I have introduced her this way, but then she knows that I am the funny one ☝🏼😅🤣 or am I the 🦇💩 crazy one??? 🤔 Yeah I am 😜 but in a good way… obvs 💁🏻♀️In this podcast episode we talk about Afformations vs Affirmations. Noooo… that’s not a typo… autocorrect has not got the best of me… this time 😅So what are Afformations? They are questions you form around the things you want instead of making firm statements which can be jarring - especially if you don’t believe themWe talk about the benefits of both and why Afformations are more helpful than Affirmations. We also talk about acknowledging that these tools are more useful when your basic needs are met…given that much of the world’s population are living in poverty, I was mindful that our discussion on this was grounded in a healthy dose of realism as well as optimism.Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme

Steven Jay Cohen describes himself as a storyteller. He narrates audiobooks and is also owner of Spoken Realms - an audio publishing business which is one of the largest producers of classic, public domain, literature on Audible, iTunes and Amazon. Spoken Realms has over 2500 titles to their credit and they help to connect storytellers from around the world with a global audience through the production of their audiobooks.Steven also sits on the Diversity Committee of the Audio Publishers Association and is on a mission to try and diversify the voices we hear in the audio publishing world. We met at The Creative Coalition event delivered by The Creative Industries Federation back in November 2020. He had posted a comment about the audio publishing industry looking for diverse voices! He shared some links (I’m looking into becoming an audio book narrator) and I then asked him to appear on my podcast! So here he is!His x3 KIRs are around his commitment to diversity in the audio publishing world, knowing that unlike other ethnically diverse people he has a choice as to whether or not he ‘can pass’ and helping good people do good work. You can find out more about Steven here: https://www.spokenrealms.com/
At the age of 16, Stephanie was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma - a brain tumour that occurs mostly in children and young adults. On the week of diagnosis she had surgery to remove the tumour. Radiotherapy and months of rehabilitation followed and during this time she was not going to school. She recovered well and remained at stable level of health for 15 years, although whilst stable she didn’t have the same level of health as the average person. At the age of 30 Stephanie began experiencing a loss of strength and balance. The tumour had not returned but her body was degenerating and still continues to degenerate, with no clear or fixable reason why. The long term effects of the tumour she had and subsequent treatment of it caused damage to her central nervous system. It’s only in the last 5 years that Stephanie has come to accept that she doesn’t have the ability to do many things and it took her a long time to come to terms with describing herself as living with a disability. She told me that “there are lots of us with disabilities whose details are unique to each person and I’m proud to speak up for all of us.” Stephanie is a Key Account Manager for Warner Bros. at Deluxe Media, working on the distribution of pre-release and catalogue titles, and servicing high-security content to broadcasters and platforms.Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme

I met Sue at Wildscreen Festival as she was speaking on a panel event about the craft of natural history/ wildlife filmmaking. She was wearing a cool t-shirt that I commented on...you’ll have to listen to this episode to find out more! I then had the gumption to ask her to be a guest on my podcast and, well, as you can see, she agreed!Sue has filmed in many extreme environments such as the Oman desert, tracked Pallas cats on the Mongolian steppe, hung out with apex predators in the Masai Mara and has also filmed in the roughest seas around Cape Horn. Her most recent filming adventure was in Kenya filming lions. How cool is that????!!!! 😎💁🏻♀️Her top three keeping it reals were around equality, conservation and stoicism. I don’t want to describe this one for two reasons. The broadcast industry is at risk of not having talented broadcast engineers or media technologists in their workforce - and just so you know, they are actually an integral part of how we all get to see content on our screens - whether that’s on a TV, laptop, tablet or smartphone. Polly Hickling, is the course leader for the media technology programme at Solent University. Her course that is facing ‘the axe’ because there aren’t enough students being recruited to join her programme. Polly has strong connections with the media technology industry, particularly with the course alumni and organises work experience, placements and graduate positions with companies within the broadcast industry. In this episode we don’t talk about her personal ‘Keeping It Reals’ but more about ‘Keeping It Real’ in the way students should consider career choices in broadcast and of course to advocate broadcast technology as a potential career path.If you’re a parent and your child/children are still undecided as to what they want to do for a living - give this a listen because a career in broadcast/media technology is ace! This will tell you why and what students need to consider to take up this career path.Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofmeYou can find out more about me on https://diversityofme.com/

Not many people know about this and Bea got in touch with me to tell me her story. Her top three Keeping It Reals are around serendipity, being tolerant and respectful, and to never stop learning. She also talks about the importance as a leader to make the most of other people’s strengths because you can’t know everything!Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
Uschi used to be my counsellor. She featured in a bonus episode in series 1 to share her three 'Keeping It Reals' for others to feel more content. Following great feedback from that particular episode, I asked Uschi to join me again with a focus on helping young adults, however, what was discussed is applicable to everyone. We talk about three points from a book called How to Overcome Your Childhood: 1) Attraction to Difficult Partners, 2) Potential traumas behind overachieving 3) The need to strive for an emotional understanding of the past. It’s a very good read and is available to buy from The School Of Life: https://www.theschooloflife.com/shop/how-to-overcome-your-childhood-book/.We also refer to a film available on YouTube based on the book called The Secret which discusses the theory of the law of attraction. Sindy is Head of Film Birmingham and supports productions filming in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands area. She is also owner of Black Star Productions, they are currently in the process of producing a film and have 3 projects in development. Her ‘Keeping It Reals’ were around her family, re-engaging with her roots and heritage, and making time for self development.**This was recorded in September 2020 where Tanya stupidly refers to being in a post-Covid environment not realising that UK was going to have a second wave of infections, worst than the first time round and that the country would go into a second lockdown 🤦🏻♀️😬🙈Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
Simon’s wife died tragically from a brain tumour. From diagnosis to death it was just three weeks, leaving him and his two young daughters to navigate a new way of living without her. Simon then became a Humanist Celebrant. What’s a Humanist Celebrant? Well, Simon helps families celebrate life when it has passed, life as it begins through a naming ceremony and the coming together of two people through the ritual of marriage. All of these celebrations are for non-religious people who above all else value the human spirit and connection as we see it and experience it every day. Whilst Simon still works in the UK broadcast industry, much of his time is dedicated with his work in humanism. Simon’s top three ‘Keeping It Reals’ are brilliant and one of my favourites so far where we talk about campfires, our energy as humans living long after we’re gone and that happiness is a choice. You can find out more about Simon and his work as a humanist celebrant here: https://humanist.org.uk/simonsmith/ Intro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily on Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
Markela, originally from Greece, works as a broadcast engineer for NEP UK. Her top three ‘Keeping It Reals’ are around being a broadcast engineer and doing the job she loves, advocating more women to take up engineering roles and being proud to be Greek whilst living in the UK albeit it does have its challenges.Markela also shares some insights around things to consider on an outside broadcast when it comes to Covid-19 and working in a predominantly male dominated profession. *This was recorded in the summer with making references to Love Island, which I hadn’t realised had been cancelled because I don’t watch it!* 🙈🤷🏻♀️ Don’t judge me!Intro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily on Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
Gus had a rather interesting pathway to getting into the media industry. He was actually a professional footballer! Realising that he had to make some hard decisions whether to pursue a career in football, he found another passion in broadcast media. His career has been varied, working on all sorts of productions and has for the last three years he has been working as Head of Production at Red Bull Media House. As a black man of Caribbean heritage, he reflects on how he has had to work twice as hard, the values instilled in him by his mother and how social mobility can play tricks on one’s mind.Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
Sallee owns an award winning, London-based brand strategy agency, with a passion for being human. She talks about embracing our difference and how by doing this you can differentiate yourself from the other 7 billion humans on this planet. We also talk about the value of kindness and our shared love of poetry, with Sallee reading out three pieces that have meant something to her at different points in her life. One of the pieces was written by a stranger who she’ll never know. They saw her crying and without her realising it, left her with a parting gift that has stayed with her always. Sometimes we humans are amazingly kind creatures…Intro and music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @thediversityofme
*TRIGGER WARNING* This poem may trigger women who are trying to have a baby, or have experienced loss of a child as it explores my emotional journey around being a woman who experiences the physical feelings of being ready to have child despite not wanting one, then becoming undecided. As a woman in my mid-thirties I STILL haven’t made my mind up about whether I want kids or not…Right now, I’m moving towards not having a child/children and I know I’ll be fine with that. However, I had a really visceral reaction to turning 30 in the form of my body telling me it was ready to bear a child. It really did affect me because I was not expecting this at all. I found it really strange that I had this physical feeling within my body and unconscious mind through my dreams brought about visions and feelings of what it would be like to be pregnant. To be honest that experience scared me because I was someone who said relentlessly that I did not want children. Now I have reconciled all that and whilst many say that I still have plenty of time and I know many women who have gone on to have healthy and happy children into their 40s, I have decided that it is highly unlikely that I will be a mother…and that’s OK as I have other amazing children in my life.Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @thediversityofme
I love a good hug. I was really missing the intimacy of romantic hugs. Then when Covid hit I missed all hugs from all my lovely friends and family. This poem was written way before the pandemic hit though and focuses on what kind of hugs I’m looking forward to. I am embarrassed by this poem but still decided to put it out there anyway because I think most people do want to be desired…who doesn’t want someone to find them attractive, to receive compliments to be showered with affection? My mum has no idea I’ve put this one out. Don’t tell her. She’ll so give be a ‘tuppur’ - which means smack in Punjabi 😅🙈😬*Please note: There is strong language in this episode*Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @thediversityofme
Whilst at the time of writing this poem I am happy being single, although I know that I don’t want to be single forever. So occasionally, when I allow it, there is the thought of you… whoever you are. And this is what I’d like it to be like when you do make yourself known to me.Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
It’s a bit sh*t going through a break up isn’t it? It does get better though. However, this poem doesn’t explore the getting better bit… it was written whilst still in the throws of emotional turmoil. Hopefully you’ll be able to resonate with the words.*Please note: There is strong language in this episode*Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
When it comes to being in a relationship, have you ever felt like you’ve compromised a little too much? Have you conformed that bit too easily? Have you always put others before yourself? Then you may be able to relate to this poem that explores what it is to be ‘too nice.’*Please note: There is strong language in this episode*Intro & outro music credit: Dawn Awaits by Cody Martin, obtained from www.soundstripe.comI’m on social if you’re interested…primarily Insta and occasionally Twitter: @diversityofme
