All that health and wellness content on TikTok is SO confusing - please, can we eat cheese or not!? In this episode, Mim sat down with Kate Hilton, RD, from Diets Debunked, to talk about why there’s so much misinformation on TikTok, how she approaches breaking these down and what YOU can do to make sure you don’t fall for it. Oh! We also answer some of your questions too!Liked this episode? There’s a misconception that preventive medicine is at odds with our traditional approach to health - but besties, it’s not! When it comes to our health, prevention is a complex concept that is both baked into how we can optimise our wellbeing, and in traditional medicine to help us be our happiest, healthiest and most fulfilled selves. In this episode, Ragav Sharma, DO, came on to talk about what preventive medicine is, why it’s not at odds with conventional medicine and the ‘risk-reward’ concept of prevention - i.e. how do we decide when a something is worth doing for our health?Liked this episode? The most boring diet advice you might’ve gotten is to ‘eat a balanced diet’ - I get it, it’s easier said than done and it’s not what you want to do! But bestie, it truly is such a great way to reach your fitness goals AND soothe your soul. In this episode, Mim talks to Leena Abed - THE Practical Nutritionist - about why this approach is so beneficial, and how we can reach balance, especially as women of colour.Liked this episode? Obesity is SUCH a complex issue and is so misunderstood - it’s not just a matter of calories in and calories out! Things like poverty, ethnicity and the environment play a huge role in its development and bestie, even clinical trials are…kinda rigged against people living in a larger body? In this episode, Mim sits down with Professor Giles Yeo to talk about some of the biological causes of obesity, why it’s so simple but SO complex, and how weight stigma is NOT the way to solve the obesity epidemic!Liked this episode? Disease is something that you and I have a vague idea about - but do we really know what it means and why it’s such a big deal when something is classified as a disease? WELL there was a lot of ✨drama✨ about it in the early 2000s and like health, it’s a concept that is constantly changing. In this episode, I’ll take a brief look at the philosophy of disease but mainly, how we’ve tried to use it to combat social stigma around obesity. Yep - that’s a thing we tried to do!Liked this episode? Look - health is something that is important to you and I, right? We want to be our best possible, healthy selves and will try out all these different things to attain that healthy lifestyle. Honestly, most of the info we see on TikTok is probably not helpful, but it’s becomingly increasingly difficult to define fact from foe…and…wait what? A lot of isn’t aligned to what health is? Well, it’s only right that in this episode, Mim explores the concept of Health and how it’s evolved in our ever-evolving digital world. We go through the history of Health perception, healthcare provision and how it’s all come together to form our modern view of Health. So, shall we ask - ‘What is health?’Support us on Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/thegrowthmediumFollow us!InstagramTikTokFacebookYouTubeFull show notes: https://www.thegrowthmedium.com/show-notes/season-4-episode-2 Hosted on Acast. The ‘Big Questions’ sounds like a really meta and existential theme for a health and science podcast - but tell me, how many times have you been panic Googling those weird tummy aches you’ve been having, only to be unsatisfied with the answers you’ve been getting? I get it, you’ve got questions and Wikipedia isn’t cutting it anymore! That’s exactly what this season is about - not only answering those annoying questions, but also questioning pre-conceived notions we have around health and science. Make sure to have a coffee ready, because this season will be a rideee ;)Follow us!InstagramTikTokFacebookYouTube Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

You’ve been waiting for it! The season finale for Season 3 is finally here - and being true to our ✨growth✨ mindset, I’ve decided to do a reflective episode on this season. I took a look back into some of the stories we’ve heard - including PCOS experiences, IUD insertions and abortions, and revisit what some of our experts thought about women’s health so far. Heavy bleeding, light bleeding....and bleeding when you're on hormone replacement therapy? People have been noticing that their periods have changed after having the COVID-19 vaccine, and the confusion has not gone unnoticed! In this episode, Mim and Sara talk to Dr. Nighat Arif - GP with a Special Interest in Women's Health - and ask her the pressing questions about this phenomenon. Why are period cycles becoming irregular, why was this not measured in clinical trials and why is this STILL not listed as a side effect? Trust us, the answers are not what you're expecting - and oh, the gender research gap plays a huge part of it. Painful cysts, oily skin and acne are just some of the symptoms people with PCOS face everyday. The constant fatigue, irregular periods and excessive hair growth impacts the daily life of many people, and the variety of symptoms makes PCOS one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose. The vastness of this condition means that there is no shortage of diet and lifestyle myths and misinformation to follow it! In this episode, Mim and Sara sit down with Tasnima Zaman and Alex Williams ANutr. We talk to Tasnima about her experience with PCOS, how it affects her everyday life and what she does not to manage it. Alex weighs in to debunk some of the myths around PCOS symptom management - and trust me, she brings the receipts!Support us on Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/thegrowthmediumThe SocialsInstagramTikTokFacebookYouTubeAlex's SocialsInstagram Twitter The Collective WellnessMEDICAL DISCLAIMERThe information provided in this podcast is for information and entertainment purposes only. Women's bodies have long been subject to stigmatised views since the beginning of time. This outlook extends to the topic of the menstrual cycle and periods. In this episode we tackle this 'shame' by discussing the science behind this monthly occurrence. The biology behind it is fascinating and complex. We, in turn, take a look at the different stages of the menstrual cycle; including the ovarian and uterine cycles and the hormonal manifestations that accompany them. We also delve into the nuances and the more social aspects of how having periods can affect lives on a more practical basis. Support us on Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/thegrowthmediumThe SocialsInstagramTikTokFacebookYouTubeDisclaimerThe information provided in this podcast is for information and entertainment purposes only. The history of women's health and medicine for women has been turbulent, violent and a means to control women's body. Whilst much has improved and modern medicine assigns a relative degree of choice and equity to women, its routes are still sullied by its colonial past. In this episode, Mim and Sara speak to Dr. Elinor Cleghorn about the evolution of women's health. We touch on its colonial past, the horrific practises that were deemed acceptable, and how many archaic ideas are still deeply entrenched in modern medicine. We specifically look at Anglo-American medical systems, and how they've been influenced by other European notions and have developed over time. Support us on Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/thegrowthmediumThe SocialsInstagramTikTokFacebookYouTubeDisclaimerThe information provided in this podcast is for information and entertainment purposes only. A history of neglect, violence and sheer control plagues women's health. To this day, women are not believed when we speak about our pain and medicine is androcentric - that is, the male body is used as standard. This season, Mim and Sara are going to take a look at Women's Health, particularly it's evolution. How did it became what it is, why we have such little knowledge on the female body and the steps we can do to improve. Of course, we'll be talking about all your favourite topics including the COVID-19 vaccine and periods - all whilst debunking those myths and misinformation whilst speaking with the experts.
