May 31st is the four-year anniversary of my tweet, All Lives Matter! Every Single One! On today's episode I discuss what it was like for me back then. I answer the question am I'm sorry for my tweet and the answer is no and will always be no. I read a story from Phil Mushnick of the NY Post dated June 4, 2020. The subject was my tweet. Phil, unlike so many others, doesn't turn his head on important topics. He isn't afraid to speak out on sensitive topics. I applaud him for that. As MLK Jr once said, "our lives begin to end the day we remain silent about things that matter". Unfortunately, too many people in our country remain silent about things that matter. Antisemitism is just one example. I also read several other notes from 2020 including an email written by my dad's best friend after my father passed away in 2007. The email to this day is one of my greatest treasures as it encapsulates what my family stands for. On today's episode I reflect on the life of Bill Walton who passed away from cancer yesterday at the age of 71. I was blessed to have known Bill, work with Bill and so many of his friends. There will never be another Bill Walton. I share how I met Bill and what it was like calling NBA games with him. Announcing a game with Bill was hard to describe. It was 2.5 hours of flying by the seat of your pants, because I never knew what crazy things Bill would say. I also let you listen to Bill talking to a crowd about legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden. On today's episode I reflect back on the career of Hall of Famer Jim Otto. Otto passed away this week at the age of 86. 00 is one of the most iconic images in pro football history. Otto played 15 seasons and never missed a game. He was a pro both on and off the field. I think you could make a strong argument that Otto is still the greatest Center ever! On today's podcast I discuss Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs. Butker recently delivered the commencement address at Benedictine College. He made comments on several topics that stirred much criticism and debate. I let you listen to an overview by ABC News and then we listen to an interesting conversation with NFL Network Host Rich Eisen and his wife Suzy Shuster who is a reporter at the same network. I then discuss the double standards in our society. Why isn't there much outrage over Rashee Rice who also is a member of the Chiefs. His offseason thus far has been one of utter embarrassment and reckless regard for human life. Two players on the same team, same league, but completely different in terms of coverage and outrage. Do you watch NFL pregame shows? On today's episode I discuss the recent firings of Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason by CBS. They are being replaced by J.J. Watt and Matt Ryan. Is there a reason for this? I play an excerpt from the Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio, New York. Kay insinuates age played a role and that is a slippery slope for CBS. I also read part of a column written by Phil Mushnick of the NY Post. Mushnick thinks these shows are a waste of time and I tend to agree. How often do you tune in to the various pregame shows? On today's episode I review the Sacramento Kings season that resulted in 46 wins, but not good enough for the playoffs. I always like to look at 5-game increments. I think that is a better way to evaluate a team. I give a grade for every 5-games and then a letter grade for the players and coach. Yesterday it was announced that the Oakland A's will be playing in West Sacramento beginning next season for three years. On today's episode I talk about the facts...numbers that cannot be disputed regarding the franchise's attendance spanning seven decades. I feel bad for the A's fans, but the bottom line is they didn't support the team even when the A's were winning. I read an excerpt from Marcos Breton's column in yesterday's Sacramento Bee. He put it better than I could have. A's fans shouldn't be bitter at Sacramento. The A's and Oakland went through a divorce, which was approved by MLB. Gambling on sports in America has been going on for generations. What was once taboo for sports leagues has become the norm, and that's promoting sports gambling. On today's episode I discuss the past week and the various stories that are having a negative impact on our sports leagues. Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers said publicly yesterday that he has never bet on sports or instructed anyone else to do so on his behalf. Yet, many questions remain involving his former interpreter and gambling allegations. Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said last week that he has been threatened by gamblers and that we are walking a dangerous line. Yesterday, ESPN reported that Jontay Porter of the Raptors is being investigated for suspicious actions regarding prop bets. I also discuss the negative effect on young men in this country as it relates to sports gambling. I believe this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's that time of year! The NCAA Men's and Women's tournaments take center stage this week. On today's episode I explore the reasons why so many people watch these games, despite knowing very little about the teams. Most of us fill out brackets, but base our picks on merely a guess. Some pick teams because of a nickname, or geographical location. Gambling also enters into the attraction of these games besides just a bracket. We lost a great man and a tremendous NFL reporter this week as ESPN's Chris Mortenson passed away from cancer at age 72. On today's episode I talk about my days at ESPN and what I recall about Mort. There has been a lot of talk this week about court storming after Wake Forrest upset Duke last Saturday. Duke's Kyle Filipowski was injured during the melee. On today's episode I talk about my dear friend Scot Pollard. Scot just received an amazing gift, On Friday Scot underwent heart transplant surgery. I visited Scot the very next day in Nashville and talk about the emotions that went into that visit. I was blown away that Scot was doing so well, less than 24 hours after surgery. It is a testament to medical technology and Scot's drive to always be great! It is easy for me to see why Scot made it to the NBA. On today's episode I preview Sunday's big game between San Francisco and Kansas City. I begin by going over the 49ers regular season schedule and then talk about their two wins in the playoffs. Next, I look at what the Chiefs did in the regular season which wasn't nearly as impressive as the 49ers. The postseason though has been much different. On today's episode I go over the NBA All Star selections. I discuss Domantas Sabonis of the Kings and his omission from this year's squad. It is unbelievable to me that Sabonis was not selected by the coaches. I look at that as total lack of respect. Karl Anthony Towns of the Timberwolves is on the team, but if you look at the stats across the board Sabonis is superior! I don't get it! On today's episode I talk about an article in the NY Post by Phil Mushnick. Mushnick wrote about the ugly fan response during the recent Bulls Ring of Honor ceremony. During the ceremony, when the late Jerry Krause's name was introduced many in the stands booed. The reaction brought Jerry's widow Thelma to tears. I play the recording of the event along with the comments from former Bull and current Bulls TV analyst Stacey King. Kings, to his credit, called out the fans who booed Krause. The problem is in today's society these things appear to be more of the norm than the exception. How low do you have to be to boo a dead man in front of his widow and grandchildren! Awful!
