On today's episode I review the Sacramento Kings season that resulted in 46 wins, but not good enough for the playoffs. I always like to look at 5-game increments. I think that is a better way to evaluate a team. I give a grade for every 5-games and then a letter grade for the players and coach. This past week the NBA gave a lifetime ban to Jontay Porter of the Raptors for his involvement in betting on NBA games. Is this just the tip of the iceberg? Yesterday it was announced that the Oakland A's will be playing in West Sacramento beginning next season for three years. On today's episode I talk about the facts...numbers that cannot be disputed regarding the franchise's attendance spanning seven decades. I feel bad for the A's fans, but the bottom line is they didn't support the team even when the A's were winning. I read an excerpt from Marcos Breton's column in yesterday's Sacramento Bee. He put it better than I could have. A's fans shouldn't be bitter at Sacramento. The A's and Oakland went through a divorce, which was approved by MLB. Gambling on sports in America has been going on for generations. What was once taboo for sports leagues has become the norm, and that's promoting sports gambling. On today's episode I discuss the past week and the various stories that are having a negative impact on our sports leagues. Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers said publicly yesterday that he has never bet on sports or instructed anyone else to do so on his behalf. Yet, many questions remain involving his former interpreter and gambling allegations. Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said last week that he has been threatened by gamblers and that we are walking a dangerous line. Yesterday, ESPN reported that Jontay Porter of the Raptors is being investigated for suspicious actions regarding prop bets. I also discuss the negative effect on young men in this country as it relates to sports gambling. I believe this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's that time of year! The NCAA Men's and Women's tournaments take center stage this week. On today's episode I explore the reasons why so many people watch these games, despite knowing very little about the teams. Most of us fill out brackets, but base our picks on merely a guess. Some pick teams because of a nickname, or geographical location. Gambling also enters into the attraction of these games besides just a bracket. We lost a great man and a tremendous NFL reporter this week as ESPN's Chris Mortenson passed away from cancer at age 72. On today's episode I talk about my days at ESPN and what I recall about Mort. There has been a lot of talk this week about court storming after Wake Forrest upset Duke last Saturday. Duke's Kyle Filipowski was injured during the melee. On today's episode I talk about my dear friend Scot Pollard. Scot just received an amazing gift, On Friday Scot underwent heart transplant surgery. I visited Scot the very next day in Nashville and talk about the emotions that went into that visit. I was blown away that Scot was doing so well, less than 24 hours after surgery. It is a testament to medical technology and Scot's drive to always be great! It is easy for me to see why Scot made it to the NBA. I also talk about donors and the amazing gift of life that donors provide. Please continue to pray for Scot and his family. He has a long road ahead, but so far so good! On today's episode I preview Sunday's big game between San Francisco and Kansas City. I begin by going over the 49ers regular season schedule and then talk about their two wins in the playoffs. Next, I look at what the Chiefs did in the regular season which wasn't nearly as impressive as the 49ers. The postseason though has been much different. On today's episode I go over the NBA All Star selections. I discuss Domantas Sabonis of the Kings and his omission from this year's squad. It is unbelievable to me that Sabonis was not selected by the coaches. I look at that as total lack of respect. Karl Anthony Towns of the Timberwolves is on the team, but if you look at the stats across the board Sabonis is superior! I don't get it! On today's episode I talk about an article in the NY Post by Phil Mushnick. Mushnick wrote about the ugly fan response during the recent Bulls Ring of Honor ceremony. During the ceremony, when the late Jerry Krause's name was introduced many in the stands booed. The reaction brought Jerry's widow Thelma to tears. I play the recording of the event along with the comments from former Bull and current Bulls TV analyst Stacey King. Kings, to his credit, called out the fans who booed Krause. The problem is in today's society these things appear to be more of the norm than the exception. How low do you have to be to boo a dead man in front of his widow and grandchildren! Awful! On today's episode we listen to some of my favorite NBA PA announcers. For me growing up in New York, I loved John Condon, the voice of MSG. He was a very popular figure in New York and his intros of the 1973 Eastern Conference Finals were great! If you are a Sixers fan than you know of Dave Zinkoff. The Zink was legendary in Philly and the fans loved him! For Lakers fans the voice of Lawrence Tanter is synonymous with Laker home games. I never heard any other voice in my 32 years of calling games in LA involving the Lakers. If you like high energy and a guy who is very unique there is Mason in Detroit! This has not been a good week for the Disney umbrella of ESPN and ABC. It began with Aaron Rodgers insinuating that late night host Jimmy Kimmel would be on the Jeffrey Epstein list that was released a few days ago. Rodgers made those comments while making his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN. I talk about the comments by Rodgers and those of the host McAfee who attacked a senior ESPN executive on the air. I then play part of Kimmel's monologue from his last show on ABC. On today's episode I reflect on 2023. I begin by talking about the great year for the Sacramento Kings which saw them reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006. I also read a few reviews from listeners and react to some of their comments. I really don't like mixing sports and politics, but sometimes it in unavoidable. I spend a few minutes talking about the biggest problem I see facing our country. I then talk about what I want to see in 2024 and the first things is good health. Scot Pollard is a dear friend of mine, and the former King needs a heart transplant. More than anything else, I want him celebrating next New Year's Eve healthy and with a good functioning heart! The Dodgers have agreed to a 12-year $325 million dollar deal with Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. This comes on the heels of the Dodgers signing Shohei Ohtani for $700 million over 10 years. Oh yeah, the Dodgers also have to pay an additional $50 million to Yamamoto's previous team in Japan. On today's episode I talk about the broken sport of baseball and the unbalance among the teams in MLB. I also reflect on the days before players demanding trades and free agency. Gosh, I miss those times! I don't see any upside to a team paying two players over $1 billion total dollars. I think this is bad for the sport of baseball which already has many problems. They are so passionate and deserve a winning team so much!
