Dustin Higgs has been on federal death row for two decades for the murder of three young women, but the man who shot all three is serving a life sentence. Higgs is scheduled to be executed on January 15th. On January 12th, a federal judge halted his execution due to his COVID-19 diagnoses, but experts say he's not out of the woods yet. The Trump administration has carried out 11 executions of federal death row inmates in its final months - three during its lame duck period, which hasn’t happened in over 130 years. Dustin Higgs and Cory Johnson are scheduled for execution before President-Elect Joe Biden takes office on January 20th. Karina speaks to Higgs’ lawyer, Shawn Nolan, before and after the stay was issued, and we hear about the mad dash for clemency in the final days before Friday, January 15th. We also hear from Robert Dunham, the Executive Director of the Death Penalty Information Center, who notes, “you can’t take race out of the death penalty.”Links:AP: US inmate Scheduled to be Executed Tests Positive for VirusDeath Penalty Info Center 2020 ReportDeath Penalty Info Center Sept. 2020 Report: Enduring Injustice: The Persistence of Racial Discrimination in the U.S. Death Penalty“Killing Richard Glossip” - watch now on discovery+Hotline: 1-888-9 RED FLA / (188)-973-3352 Hosted on Acast. What happens when a close family member commits a horrific crime? What, if any, resources are available for the family members of incarcerated people? This week, Tori speaks to Issac Bailey, veteran journalist and author of the book “My Brother Moochie,” which details what Issac and his family have endured after his older brother killed a man and was sentenced to life in prison. After the tragic murder of Bianca Devins in 2019 and the subsequent harassment of her family by internet users sending them graphic content depicting her death, it became clear that legislation is needed to prevent graphic social media content and future online abuse. This bill would require social media companies to establish an office dedicated to identifying and removing violent and gory content that violates their moderation standards. Social media companies must be held accountable for violent content on their platforms, and because of this I urge you to vote in support of Bianca’s Law, H.R. 8323. Thank you for your time. I hate to cut in on an important conversation with so much truth in it, but as a former queer kid who struggled to find resources in the 80s, in the Bible belt, online privacy for teens is CRITICAL to the safety of LGBTQ+ kids. Especially trans kids. And I don't just mean from online predators. I mean from abusive family. Often, the only safe place queer kids get support is online, and many a child has had their internet history ransacked by an intrusive parent and then been abused for what their parents find. I get wanting to protect kids, I want to protect them too, but I get so twitchy when it comes to monitoring teens' online activity, or monitoring software. Those are POTENT tools of abuse, it's incredibly common, and I have seen SO MANY teens get in deep shit over it. Intrusive monitoring of teens' private activity is HARMFUL, it drives them away, it irrevocably damages their trust in their parents. Back in my day all we had to worry about was our folks reading our diaries or r

this is super annoying! these girls doing a true crime podcast but all the while apologizing for all the terrible people who find it interesting. then trying to make themselves feel/ seem better because they don't want to see the pictures of bodies or crime scenes. this podcast made me feel like a terrible person throughout the entire show as the girls spoke about their topic but also how terrible you are if you want more than just a rehash of stories we've already heard a million times.

sites like 4chan should really be shut down. they're just places for misogynistic, racist men to gather and feel validated in their hatred. they don't deserve to have safe spaces on the internet. I made the mistake of going on Bianca's instagram page and it was filled with nothing but hateful comments that she got what she deserved. I know it's hard for platforms to monitor every single account, but the fact that these people can just freely post on the internet and say wicked, ugly things about a girl who was murdered is truly disgusting. I wish there was some way to ban people like that from using these sites forever.

Y'all, I really liked where you all were headed with this, but when you started giving excuses as to why someone would have enough rage to be an abuser? I just couldn't stomach the rest. No thanks. As someone who listens, reads, and studies it.....There is NEVER an excuse to be a perpetrator. Unsubscribed.....

I'm trying really hard to like this bc I like there voices but first it took 10 min to get to the point. I'm a person who likes when They get to the point right away and I am not a fan when they talk about themselves so often! I wish them luck in everything and I'm gonna give a few more episodes but they r who they r so I'm sure its not going to change. I truly do wish them the best tho
