S1 Ep8. Breakfast

What is culture, and why does it matter? This episode gets to the heart of the season: we’ll look at how the Catholic Church has shaped our everyday culture, and why that’s a very good thing. Break Fast host Father Brian A. Graebe is the pastor of The Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in Lower Manhattan. https://oldcathedral.org/ Music and Production by Josh Canevari. S1 Ep7. Sugar-apples

S1 Ep7. Sugar-apples

2021-01-1919:12

Not too long ago, I was visiting a priest friend who’s a pastor on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. One morning at breakfast he offered me a sugar-apple, which he grows right outside his kitchen. I had never tasted or even heard of this before, but it was delicious: pure delight. The older we get, the less we’re amazed by things. But children are amazed by everything. In this episode we’ll look at the spiritual childhood to which Jesus so often calls us: what it means and why it’s so difficult. Break Fast host Father Brian A. It’s a tradition in some places to eat certain foods on a saint’s feast day. Often these foods allude to the way that saint died. It might seem a bit macabre, but Catholics have always had a comfortable, even familiar relationship with death. We’ll look at what Catholics call the “last things”, in a culture that is increasingly uncomfortable with mortality. Break Fast host Father Brian A. S1 Ep5. Chartreuse

S1 Ep5. Chartreuse

2021-01-0519:17

If you’re not familiar with Chartreuse, you should be. It’s one of the most distinctive flavors, and colors, in the world. It’s made by Carthusians, the most austere religious order in the world, at their flagship monastery (chartreuse) in the south of France. Only two monks at a time know the recipe, which includes more than a hundred different plants, herbs, and flowers. Each ingredient has a part to play in making the final product. That’s true in the spiritual life as well. God has a plan for each one of us: the question is figuring out what that plan is, and having the courage to follow it.  Break Fast host Father Brian A. Italian meals often feature three basic staples: wine, bread and olive oil, which we also use for a number of sacraments. Why is Catholicism such an earthy religion, emphasizing physical things: water and wine, candles and statues and relics? We’ll look at how all of creation is included in the work of redemption, and the role that physical things, including our bodies, play in that. Break Fast host Father Brian A. S1 Ep3. Manhattans

S1 Ep3. Manhattans

2020-12-2218:20

My grandparents loved Manhattan cocktails, and taught me how to make and enjoy them, too. We live in an age marked by such rapid advances in all sectors of life, that the wisdom of our forebears is largely ignored, if not mocked. We’ll look at why Catholics value tradition so highly, how it differs from nostalgia, and the perils of forgetting what came before.  Break Fast host Father Brian A. S1 Ep2. Grasshoppers

S1 Ep2. Grasshoppers

2020-12-1519:441

Have you ever been asked if you liked grasshoppers, and then been passed a bowl of them to eat? Was that question asked by a bishop in Africa? We’ll look at why we call the Church catholic, and how one faith can take shape in so many diverse cultures. Break Fast host Father Brian A. S1 Ep1. Champagne

S1 Ep1. Champagne

2020-11-3020:32

Dom Pérignon is often called the Father of Champagne, and developed a number of techniques that improved its quality. We’ll look at his story, and the story of Champagne itself, and see how they help us better understand the transformation that lies at the heart of Christianity. Break Fast host Father Brian A. S2 EP7: Grand Canyon

2024-01-0217:56

There are few places as awe inspiring as the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon goes on as far as the eye can see, and visitors can't help but feel wonder when looking out upon them. S2 EP6: Auschwitz

S2 EP6: Auschwitz

2023-12-1918:15

Where was God in Auschwitz? That is a natural question one might ask themselves inside the death camp. How could an all-good and all-powerful God let this happen? If he is all powerful and couldn't prevent this, but didn't, then how can he be all-good? But there is a beauty in the suffering, even a place like Auschwitz can show. Sometimes even the darkest places show us the true meaning of love. Join Father Graebe as he explains how. Break Fast is hosted by Father Brian A Graebe. S2 EP5: Taj Mahal

S2 EP5: Taj Mahal

2023-12-0515:54

The Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Did you know it is actually a tomb built by a grieving emperor for his Queen? Interesting tidbits aside, what does a Muslim tomb in a Hindu country have to say to us as Catholics? Join Father Graebe as he discusses the Taj Mahal, and the beauty that is found in death. S2 EP4: Roman Forum

S2 EP4: Roman Forum

2023-11-2814:09

Rome was once the capital of the world, with sprawling borders reaching from the far edges of Europe to the Middle East. The thought of the Roman empire becoming nothing more than ancient ruins visited by tourist would be unfathomable to anyone who lived under Roman rule. But as the old saying goes, nothing last forever. But that truism, is in fact that not actually true. Join Father Graebe as he explains how some things are truly eternal. The Statue of Liberty is arguably the most iconic symbol of freedom in the world. The promise of freedom is so deeply ingrained in the American soul, that it could be argued that freedom is the core principle of this great nation. A misunderstanding of freedom, however, can lead to permissiveness that make us slaves to impulse. Join Father Brian A. Graebe as he explores how true freedom is only found through God's grace, not on this earth. Break Fast is hosted by Father Brian A. Graebe. Music and production is done by Josh Canevari. “I feel like I’m standing inside a jewel.” is a common refrain from first time visitors of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The historical home of Jesus's crown of thorns, Sainte-Chapelle is an architectural wonder. But like many other Catholic churches, Sainte-Chapelle is criticized for the beauty it is known for. The church has all this money, gold and art and could have given it to the poor, why waste it on a church? Join Father Graebe as he explains the reason why the beauty and majesty of churches matter, and why it is just a taste of what we will see in heaven. Break Fast is hosted by Father Brian A. Graebe.
