Sixty years ago, medical trail blazer and veterinary orthopedic surgeon Lincoln Parkes built the first “dog cart” for his surgical patients. They could wheel themselves about while they recovered from surgery and maintain their strength. Since then K9 Carts, the business born of Dr. Parkes’ simple contraption, has kept millions of dogs mobile from Florida to Nepal. Dogs use wheelchairs to recover from surgery, but also during recovery or illness. Their humans, some of whom join us for today’s show, have adaptations to make, but those are well worth it to care for their dogs with disabilities. There’s even a UK charity to help owners who can’t afford wheels. The Humane Animal Welfare Society in Waukesha frequently takes over the custody of dogs from over-crowded shelters in Southern states where they face the risk of euthanasia. These dogs have a higher likelihood of finding a forever home in Wisconsin. The trips to bring these dogs closer to a better life can be grueling and expensive. In November of 2022, one of those trips went horribly wrong. Deaf dogs don’t get adopted, and we tend to feel really badly if our own dogs go deaf. What ignorant humans we are! On today’s show we hear from leading voices in the deaf dog advocacy community, and they set us straight. Turns out that if you can train, care for, and live with a hearing-enabled dog, you’ll love training, caring for, and living with a deaf dog, too. And yes, sign language for dogs is a real thing, and it works, just as well as voice commands. Deafness can even be a doggy superpower. These dogs can perform with zero distractions in high volume circumstances that would make a hearing-enabled dog spin out. In fact, deaf dogs have broken two Guinness World Records. It’s a lot to take in, but we promise, you will reform your own attitude toward hearing after listening to our guests today … and you’ll also have some simple ways to test your dog’s hearing at home. Guests Terrie Hayward is the founder of Positive Animal Wellness, an online resource for all-around positive reinforcement training that also specializes in deaf dogs. Melissa Millet is the founder and head trainer at In Dogs We Trust. Four-year-old Peggy, believed to be a Pug and Chinese Crested cross (a ‘Pugese’) The competition was organized by a printing company. Peggy won a pamper session at a pet salon. Salon manager Sam Burton said: "I think she's really cute in her own way." Which dog has the strongest bite? Some scientists did a study a few years ago and it’s resurfaced in the news this week. The top three were as follows: (1) The Kangal has the strongest bite of any breed of dog – an impressive 743 psi. This makes them particularly good at guarding livestock from predators in their native Turkey (2) The Dogue de Bordeaux has a fearsome bite strength of 556 psi - although this breed is notoriously so lazy they are unlikely to often use it. (3) The Mastiff's impressive 552 psi bite has been used to great effect over the years in everything from guarding villages to hunting wolves. Oodie for dogs! Dog breeding can be a highly controversial topic. Why bring more puppies into the world when there are still dogs needing homes in shelters? In today’s episode, we explore that perception with some thoughtful input from two of our expert guests. A lot goes into the process of becoming a responsible dog breeder: What costs are involved? How do you actually “breed” dogs? What breed should you choose? How do you even get started? We hear from one breeder in Canada who went all the way to Brazil to find exactly what she was looking for to start her line of dogs. And did you know that some dogs require artificial insemination? Do you know how much that COSTS? Once mom is through labor and the so cute pups arrive, the intensive labor for humans is just beginning. Raising them is a hands-on endeavor, and then playing lifelong matchmaker for the little darlings is not as easy as you might thing. Everyone wants a cute puppy, but who will be a great match, and who will give up on your sweet little ball of fluff and send them back to your loving arms? If you’re thinking it’s all worth it because they make a lot of money, you might be sobered by the financial reality check our guests share. To lighten the mood, we end with a jolly tale of a Christmas birth. If you take a look at your dog, it’s not always clear what its body parts are used for. Sure, eyes are for seeing, ears are for hearing––but why is a dog's nose wet? And why do some of them have floppy ears? Dogs have an extra set of front claws that don’t even touch the ground. What do those do? And as for anal glands … why in the world do they need to be expressed? In this episode, Jim and Clare shrink down to the size of a flea and take an exciting tour of your dog’s body. A panel of experts joins our hosts to make heads or tails of serrated lips, corkscrew tails, and carpal pads. Buckle up … things are getting messy. Today on the show is our Christmas celebration! We are sharing the story of Jenine Stanley who was born legally blind and spent much of her life believing she did not need a guide dog. Everything changed when she moved to the city. Finding she needed help navigating the busy streets and noisy atmosphere, she found her first guide dog. While it may not have been love at first sight, it was love at first “feel.” Jenine now works to help others receive the love and assistance that only a service dog can give. To celebrate her beloved dogs, Jenine writes a new Christmas poem every year. In this special episode, we perform her version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Grab a cup of cocoa and snuggle up with your pup, because it’s about to get real cozy! Some say humans learns best through story, and when you look at the history of dogs in folklore, you see plenty of evidence. One story about one single dog can influence the way humans feel about dogs – or that type of dog – for years, decades, centuries, even millenia. For thousands of years, seeing seeing a black dog was a good sign, a helpful warning from the spiritual world … or something quite sinister. Author D.S. Nelson calls forth some ancient stories so we moderns can see just how far we’ve come. Or have we? Dr. Stanley Coren pitches in with a thoroughly contemporary tale of a vicar’s wife who saw a ghostly dog figure and attributed a death to it. New folklore tales like this have impact on the daily life of millions of black dogs. Superstitious human folk are not lost to the mists of time, as folklorist Mark Norman reminds us. Of course, some folklore is positive, like the guardian dogs you find in tales throughout the centuries, and even in contemporary literature. Why, even Disney’s eternally popular Lady & The Tramp is based on a folk tale about a loyal Welsh hound. Folklorist Ceallaigh MacCath-Moran weighs in with insight about how folklore is created every day in unusual ways. For example, every episode of Dog Edition creates lore … so listen today, and every week, to find out what tall tails future humans will tell. This episode is the second installment of Wag The Vote!, our dog-centric, non-partisan, on-going campaign to encourage voter participation. Dogs are the ultimate “good citizens” … and we think they want us humans to be good citizens, too. In this episode: dog mayors. (Yes, that's a thing.) Are dogs being elected to public office a sign of democratic collapse? Political hijinks to install a figurehead, a mere puppet for the masters pulling the other end of the leash? Or are they the natural end result of civically engaged communities? Today, we talk about the how and the why of successful canine campaigns for mayor. Unless it’s happened in your town, you might not realize there are quite a few animal mayors, especially in America. From the first mule candidate elected in 1938, to a town that has had animal mayors since 1998, we discuss the good, the bad, and the downright ridiculous. The cost of pet care has skyrocketed in the last ten years, and no, it's not just inflation. We’ve demanded better medical care for our non-human family members … and the industry has responded. When vets are asked to do more than “give a shot” … a vaccine, antibiotic, or steroid … the medical standards rise. And so do costs. State-of-the-art equipment costs money, as do overhead and labor. Good medicine costs good money, it turns out. Today, we do a deep dive into the inner workings of the veterinary medical industry and its complex economics. We explore the heavy impact the pandemic has had on veterinarians and their clinics. Why are so many mom-n-pop practices selling to corporate networks? Why have so many veterinarians and veterinary technicians left the field, even as demand rises? Is pet insurance a good option, or is it only adding complexity to an already-tangled situation? Historical inefficiencies must be set aside to modernize the industry … are there innovations coming that will help veterinarians help more dogs with even better medicine? Ocean liners, the majestic hotels of the sea, have never been built just for humans. Since their invention in 1840, they have accommodated many other species. In the early days, the animals who voyaged were fresh food for human passengers, so they didn’t quite complete the crossing. But that changed around the turn of the century, when passengers started asking to bring their pets on the trip. Shipping operators figured out how to let companion animals make themselves at home at sea. The most memorable ocean liner, the Titanic, was perhaps the most infamous of the ships to accommodate pets. She left Southampton for her maiden voyage with over 2000 passengers and crew … and twelve dogs on board. The dogs lived in luxury for a few days … until the ship hit the iceberg. What happened to the dogs? Ian Murphy at Liverpool’s Maritime Museum and Janette McCutcheon, author of several books about ocean liners, tell us about each … including an incredible tale of owner loyalty. Make sure you have your handkerchief in hand! By the 1930’s, ships were attracting movie stars, businesspeople, and other wealthy and glamorous passengers. And yes, they wanted their animals with them on the crossing. Who were the crew members tasked with looking after the dogs? Today only one ocean liner is left in service: the Queen Mary 2. Perhaps it’s the law of supply and demand that explains why the wait list for kenneled passengers is two years … but is it waning supply, or increasing demand? Humans choose to cross on Queen Mary 2 for a variety of reasons, from cost savings to phobia avoidance to health concerns. We speak to passengers who’ve made the trip and report how their dogs liked being on ship in a confined space with a strict diet. Was it a floating spa, or something … else? Most of us think dogs are loyal to us humans because we provide them with creature comforts: food, shelter, belly rubs. But that’s not the full story. Loyalty is deeply ingrained into canine DNA. Close bonds with humans were a crucial part of their evolution from wolves, and it’s one of the most prevalent features of dogs today. In this episode, guests Dr. James Serpell, Professor Anne Burrows, and Amanda Matoske shed light on the science behind dog loyalty. Spoiler alert: when a human gazes into a dog’s eyes, and the dog gazes back, both species release the same hormone: oxytocin. That’s the “cuddle hormone” or “love hormone” that forms deep bonds! James and Clare also share stories of two of history’s most loyal dogs, Fido and Hachiko. About James Serpell James Serpell is professor Emeritus of Ethics and Animal Welfare at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He does research in anthrozoology and specializes in the behavior and welfare of companion animals. About Anne Burrows Anne Burrows is a biological anthropologist and professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She is an expert on the unique relationship between humans and dogs and regularly teaches a course on this subject. When the pandemic ground the world to a halt, Emma was studying in France, an ocean and a continent away from her home. Returning to Oregon to be closer to her family, she did what many other Americans did that year: adopt a puppy. Hope was a rescue from Texas: a sweet, traumatized Pitbull. Despite the pandemic restrictions’ and wildfire season’s best efforts, Emma and Hope formed a quick, intense bond. Hope turned out to be Emma’s great love, and so she never considered leaving her behind when she was offered a place in Glasgow to continue her studies. But Hope was terribly afraid of loud noises, and would never get on a plane. What to do? Perhaps a trip on the Queen Mary 2 was in order. It’s the only ship that carries animals across the Atlantic. But, wait: it turns out that Hope’s breed is banned in the UK! How was this girl going to get this dog into that country? Emma turned to her mother, Lucy, for help, and the two of them planned a truly epic itinerary. Today we hear their story, and talk to Dr Sam Gaines of the RSPCA about the Dangerous Dogs Act, which has prohibited Pitbull ownership in the UK since 1991. During the COVID-19 lockdown, 1 in 5 households welcomed a new cat or dog. That’s about 23 million American homes with a new family member. You could call it a pet boom. And just like the baby boom of the post-war era or the recent millennial baby boom, it created something of an opportunity for savvy business types. Once adopted, dogs quickly establish themselves as an integral family member. Doing something special without them starts to feel … icky. Especially a little thing called “having a wedding.” As the lockdowns ended, and people started planning weddings again, they couldn’t imagine leaving their dogs out of the festivities. How could they? Their dogs were, well … family! Couples started inviting their dogs to be Best Man, Maid of Honor, Ring Bearer, and Flower Dog. Why not? Their unconditional love represents the central purpose of the marriage ceremony. Today we’re talking to the business owners who decided to support these enterprising dog lovers in their efforts to center their dogs on their Big Day. There’s the artist who crafts tuxedo harnesses suitable for walking mom and dad down the aisle. And the couple who hired their dog to be their wedding videographer. The florist who helps advise about the most dog-friendly flowers … and the ultimate dog sitter/walker company that ensures your dog appears on time for the ceremony and goes back home for the big party. Today we are headed to Argentina to a dog shelter that cares for 500 dogs! We will learn about the creative ways this shelter has increased adoptions, particularly of disabled dogs. To show how lovable and happy these dogs are, every year the shelter El Campito hosts a Disabled Dog Parade. Our hosts also discuss the poor conditions of some of the underfunded and overcrowded dog shelters in the country and how police carry out raids on backyard breeders. This episode takes a deep dive into the lives of street dogs and the challenges their loved humans face. Even people with stable living situations can struggle with veterinary costs. Queen Elizabeth II is known for her love of corgis, which began when she was gifted one in 1933 when she was very much a child. Over the next 89 years, her corgis were constant companions, and the breed became something of a mascot for her reign. We say that dog lovers are a breed apart, and we are proud that Britain’s longest reigning monarch was one of our most regal pack members. Today, we look back at her royal canine dynasty. What makes corgis suited for palace life ... and did the Queen save a dying breed? Even though we can't quite understand how this is possible, we concede that not all the members of the royal family had a good relationship with the monarch’s dogs. So, we also examine whether the Queen’s husband loved -- or merely tolerated – these short-legged cattle dogs. Another question: was the Duchess of Sussex welcomed by the Queen’s favorite pups? We also examine the role corgis played in Princess Elizabeth’s childhood and how she drew on their steady, loving presence for comfort throughout her epic reign. Dogs appear onscreen in some of the most beloved films and TV shows of all time. But what happens behind the scenes to make the magic? When a dog barks or attacks a bad guy on camera, it looks totally natural, right? It isn’t. Dogs need intense training to learn how to “act” on camera. Today’s guests, Sarah Clifford, Lindsay Hill and Mary Cummings, take us through a dog actor’s day. Training involves long hours of work, repetition, and most of all, ingenuity on behalf of the trainer. We also hear firsthand accounts of keeping dogs safe on set and some unconventional ways of breaking into the business. About Sarah Clifford Sarah Clifford is the owner and coordinator of Animal Savvy, a top-rated animal rental company for film and TV. She has notably trained dogs for roles in The Old Man, The Artist, Think Like a Dog, and dozens more. About Lindsay Hill Lindsay Hill is the official Pet Wrangler for Chewy’s promotional video and photo content. She also trains dogs for agility and other competitive events. About Mary Cummings Mary Cummings is the owner of Stone Meadow Kennel and longtime Hollywood dog trainer. Since the early 90’s, Mary has trained dogs for commercials, photoshoots, and film, with highlights including a viral Saturday Night Live sketch and John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place 2. Huge wildfires are devastating in every way possible. Forests are burned down, and the wildlife that lives there does, too. Human lives are lost, and homes are, too.  And for some, the tragedy is compounded by the need for quick escape. When you’re fleeing for your life you may not have time to pack a change of clothes and grab your important documents, let alone box up your most precious possessions. Fire survivors have much to mourn, but one of the most acute losses, many say, is leaving the cremains of their loved ones behind. Who would ever imagine that we could find ashes among heaps of ashes? Canine forensic specialists, that’s who!  Dogs who are trained to find human remains, it turns out, can find human cremains, too. Alex DeGeorgey from Alta Heritage Foundation and Lynne Engelbert, from the Institute of Canine Forensics (along with her border collie Piper) share how the dogs scent can recover the cremains, and what kind of training is involved.  James and Clare talk to the experts about this seemingly insurmountable process. You’ll learn how dogs scent and recover cremains, and what kind of training is involved. You’ll also hear Molly Rich’s moving story of recovering her dad’s ashes. About Alta Heritage Foundation It is our mission is to use applied archaeology techniques in support of humanitarian efforts; to provide heritage educational opportunities; to foster historic preservation events; to address climate change impacts to cultural resources; and to provide support to students, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations conducting archaeology or historic preservation activities. https://altahf.org/ About Alex DeGeorgey Alex’s professional career began in 1994. We’ve all heard that dogs are colorblind, and that they wag their tails because they are happy. Those are facts! Aren’t they? On today’s show, Jim and Clare turn to some special veterinarians to find out if the “facts” we think we know are actually true. Spoiler: they’re not! Dr. Ernie Ward and Dr. Brittany Genus bust these two common myths wide open. They explain how they came to be, what the research has proven, and how common misinformation like this can impact your dog’s life. Dementia is a terrible disease. The mental decline of our loved ones is heartbreaking, and the effects are profound. This condition can’t be cured, but medication and therapy can help. And what better therapy is there than the unconditional love of a dog? In today’s episode, we join Layla, a Jack Russell who visits dementia patients in a Canadian senior center. She helps those afflicted by spreading love and joy in a way only dogs can. We also get into the science and research behind why dogs are so beneficial for those with dementia. Not every guide dog in training graduates. What happens to the ones that don’t make the cut? Host Clare Mansell met one of these “career change” dogs and is happy to report that he is doing just fine as an animal ambassador, a position that is becoming more common as hotels offer comfort and accommodations to pet family members. Stewart, a Labrador retriever, had spent four years in training with Canadian Guide Dogs For The Blind before realizing he wasn’t meant to be a guide dog. After a brief job search, he landed at the Chateau Laurier, Ottawa's 5-star hotel, and settled for a new life of leisure greeting guests and playing fetch in the elegant hallways. Clare visits Stewart as he works … and he shows her all his favorite spots, including a few that are technically off-limits. Looking for some joy amid a global pandemic, Stephanie Nelson adopted tiny Juniper. It seemed like a perfect match, a wonderful addition to the family. But very quickly they realized the painful truth: Junipers needed more than their family could provide. Most dog lovers are afraid to share their rescues fails, fearing judgement and alienation. Some think it’s better to just power through: keep the dog and hope it will end well. But the opposite is often true. Returning the dog is desperately hard (as Stephanie knows firsthand) but sometimes, it’s the right thing to do. We all know dog noses are a superpower. With them, they sniff out all kinds of treasures; from delicious truffles nestled underground to human feces leaking into protected waters. Dogs' sense of smell is trumped only by bears, elephants, and cats. Come explore the many ways dogs put their spectacular sniffers to use. Truffles are a delicacy prized by chefs and foodies around the world, but these finicky fungi are hard to find. It helps to have a family of Lagotto Romagnolo, or truffle hunting dogs, to do the dirty work. The Angerer Family runs a truffle orchard in Northern California that employs Lagotto Romagnolos to hunt for these elusive and valuable “fairy apples”. Later in the show, learn more about canine olfaction as Jim and Clare share fun finds of pups using their Jacobson’s organ. Stories like that of Ammo, the Ukrainian mine sniffing Jack Russel Terrier, who shows that you don’t have to be a big dog, to be a good dog. The Alexander Valley Truffle Company Angerer Family Farms was started as a vehicle to diversify a connection to Sonoma County. For several years, as the family waited for their hazelnut trees, inoculated with the coveted French winter black truffle spores known as Tuber Melanosporum, to grow, they grew a variety of tomatoes and fruits which they sold to local markets. But as they near our first truffle harvest, attention is shifting below ground. And their five Lagotto Romagnolo truffle hunting dogs are ready! https://www.avtruffles.com/home ALTA Heritage Foundation ALTA conserves heritage through applied archaeology, education, public outreach and research. On February 24th of this year, Russia invaded Ukraine. The United Nations swiftly predicted the war would create the worst refugee crisis in Europe since WWII, and they were proven correct. Millions of people have been displaced, and among them are pet owners faced with a horrific dilemma: what to do with their animals? Bring them along on an uncertain journey? Leave them behind? Many didn’t have a choice. Photos from border crossings around Ukraine show many brought their dogs with them. But then what happened? On today’s show, we look at the journey these people and their pets made as the war unfolded. We speak with some of the people who helped along the way. Among the many challenges faced by refugees, rabies vaccinations proved to be one of the biggest obstacles to overcome. Without proof of current rabies vaccination, dogs had to be left behind at the border. For others, fleeing with their pets simply wasn’t an option. We also hear about those who stayed behind, and struggled to care for beloved pets in a war zone. It’s been said dogs are the ultimate healers. On today’s show, we look at some of the many ways they have helped humans … from the silly to the sublime. In our main story, we hear from Ward Serrill, a corporate businessman who found himself drawn to the Alaskan wilderness. He abandoned his suit and tie for hiking boots and a lab retriever named Woody. Woody’s love and companionship helped Ward look inwards, confront old trauma, and re-learn how to love. To hear the full interview with Ward Serrill, listen to Dogs as Therapists with Ward Serrill on our sister show, The Long Leash. We also look at old folk remedies that included dogs. What do you get when you combine beer, honey, and album graecum? You may not want to know: some old ways really are better left in the past. About Ward Serrill: Ward is a successful author, director, and producer. Among other successful endeavors, he created more than 90 short films and writings. In this episode, Ward discusses his memoir “To Crack the World Open: Solitude, Alaska, and a Dog Named Woody”. This book depicts a heartfelt coming of age story about a dog as a co-pilot into self-discovery. “From a remote cabin in the rugged rainforest of the Alaskan wilderness, where the untamed landscape tumbles into the ocean, a remarkable yellow Labrador retriever named Woody helped an exile from corporate America seek a fierce freedom.” Ward lives in Port Townsend, Washington, dances the tango, and plays harmonica. https://wardserrill.com/ https://woodycreekpictures.com/ Check out Dog Podcast Network for other dog-adjacent shows. The world around us is constantly changing, and not always for the better. It is undeniable that humans have a stressful impact on wildlife. But the good news is, there are conservation pups working hard to save our environment, one species at a time. Today we speak with Heather Reich, a Game Biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, and she shares with us how her Karelian bear dogs are chasing black bears in order to protect them. Black bears in the Sierra Nevada Mountains often make their way into populated areas that are abundant with easy meals; fruit trees, houses full of sweets, and garbage cans free for the taking. This is dangerous because these bears become comfortable around people and spend less time in their natural and safer environment. This is where Heather’s bear dogs come in. Once a bear is caught acting naughty within city limits multiple times, it is tranquilized and relocated to a less human populated area. Then, the bear dogs haze and harass the freshly released bears to create a negative association with people. But this is not only happening in Nevada. Nils Pedersen is the Director of the Wind River Bear Institute (WRBI) in Alaska, where he breeds and trains Karelians to do conservation work around the globe. Some of his dogs have even found their way to Japan. Picchio is a Wildlife Research Center in Japan that uses Karelian bear dogs to enable peaceful coexistence between people and the Asiatic bears that live in the forest. Junpei Tanaka tells us about his two Karelians who work as wildlife ambassadors to local communities. Lastly, we will hear from Kyoko Johnson, who is the founder and lead K9 trainer at Conservation Dogs of Hawaii. Her conservation canines detect invasive species like devil weed and coqui frogs, to help conserve the delicate flora and fauna of Hawaii. Photo Credit: John Axtell, taken of Heather’s Karelian bear dogs in Nevada Heather Reich Heather Reich is a Game Biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife and has 5 Karelian bear dogs. Using Karelians, Heather works to mediate human and bear interactions in the Sierra Nevada Mountains as a method of black bear conservation. Her first two Karelians, Sputnik and Orca, are now retired at 13 years old and are living the life of luxury with Heather and husband Derek. The rest of her pack are active canine conservators. Nils Pedersen Nils Pedersen is the Director of the Wind River Bear Institute (WRBI) in Alaska. He began working with the WRBI in 2011 as the trainer and handler of the Karelian bear dog “Soledad”. Together they have worked to address human-bear conflict issues with all three species of North American bear: brown, black, and polar bear. Nils completed a M.Sc. degree in Wildlife Biology and Conservation from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2019. Junpei has two Karelians, Tama and Rela. Tama means “bullet” in Japanese, was named after Picchio’s first bear dog from the Wind River Bear Institute. Rela means “wind” in the Ainu (indigenous peoples of northern Japan) language, and her name was a tribute to Wind River Bear Institute for first establishing the use of bear dogs as a method of coexistence. It’s always heart-warming when a dog finds their forever home, but with this constant influx of Texas dogs, we got to wondering, what exactly is going on over there? The Houston area has an ever-expanding issue with their dog population; even with the tireless efforts of organizations that transport dogs to other parts of the US and Canada, there are still far too many in the Houston area to shelter. On this episode of Dog Edition, we are taking a look at the “talking” buttons that are being used to assist and enhance peoples’ communication with their dogs! This trend took the internet by storm in 2019, and has made many of us rethink our preconceived notions about the limitations on our ability to understand our dogs’ internal worlds. Who didn’t love Betty White? No one, that’s who. We all loved Betty White. In this special episode, we remember the legendary entertainer with two special guests who have experienced her loyalty, kindness, and lovingness first-hand. Betty White Probably Wouldn’t Mind Our Comparing Her to a Really Good Dog If you’ve been alive for the last 60+ years, you’ve probably been entertained by Betty White. She was one of the hardest-working folks in show business, star of stage, both big and little screens, author … there wasn’t any side of show biz she didn’t know inside out. She was also a massive animal lover. The list of animal lives she touched both literally and figuratively is too long to list, but there is no doubt that she specifically adored dogs. We speak with Christine Benninger, CEO and president of Guide Dogs for the Blind, about Betty’s tireless efforts on behalf of their organization. Along the way, she spills the tea on how dogs who went to live with her were, er, a little spoiled. We also speak with Marc Liepis, a publicist, writer, and producer who produced Betty White for five separate appearances on Jimmy Fallon’s late night show. His memories of how kind and open-minded Betty White was are insightful, and funny. She even used a joke he pitched her you can see on YouTube https://youtu.be/Fm75HpZstNw?t=167. For centuries dogs have been regarded as (hu)man’s best friend; but for many of us, sharing our lives with dogs is more than a preferred lifestyle. You may have felt it before– the sense that your dog has a massively positive impact on your overall well-being. Well, you’re not alone! There is a reason why dogs are used professionally in a therapeutic setting. Dogs are natural-born healers, capable of providing the most primal form of comfort, and helping people process trauma. If you look closely, your dog may even present you with opportunities for self-reflection and personal growth. In this episode we hear from two very different people who have witnessed the incredible healing power of dogs, and discuss the ways in which dogs can have a profound positive impact on our mental health. Dogs have been painted, sculpted, photographed and made into memes and art depicting our furry best friends are celebrated on screens big and small and given pride of place in galleries, museums and homes. So what is behind this fascination that humans have with immortalizing dogs in art? Why do we immortalize dogs in art? The earliest depictions of dogs are believed to be 9,000 years ago carved into a cliff in what is now Saudi Arabia. Through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance to the modern day, humans across the globe have immortalized dogs in art across changing mediums and media and in all shapes and sizes. The hundreds of thousands of pieces that sit in galleries, museums and homes are a testament to our ongoing love and adoration of dogs, but they also tell a story, the evolution of our relationship with them and how that, and they, have changed over the years. In this episode, we journey through the ages and retrace the paw-steps of dogs of a bygone era. We explore how they have been immortalized, the stories those pieces tell, and their place in art history and in society today as a reminder of the importance humanity places on our best friends. It is the last step after a long, protracted unhappy few months. Everything collected as a couple over a lifetime is divided up as one becomes two and they go their separate ways. But what about the dog? How is that going to work and how do you keep the dog’s best interest a priority? Who gets the dog if we split? At a time when dog ownership is growing and the way people see dogs in a family setting is getting more complex, so too is the need to consider dogs during divorce. Legal disputes are on the rise over who will get the dog, and with dogs considered chattels, like furniture, in most jurisdictions, stories are rife of couples fighting in court, sometimes just to spite their ex-partner. While some states in the US and in other parts of the world are changing the law so judges have leeway to consider the best interests of pets during a divorce, like they do children, it is not across the board. But an emerging industry of mediators and Petnups has developed, to help couples negotiate who will get the dog. Pet custody specialist Karis Nafte is a mediator who helps people decide the best way forward for their dog and in this episode, she walks us through all the ins and outs of what to know for your dog, before, during and after a split. About Karis Nafte, Pet Custody Specialist Originally from the USA, Karis started working with dogs professionally in 1996. She has hugely varied background in animal work; puppy training, doggy daycare, obedience, behavior problems, dog sports, aggressive dogs, shelter work, and on set movie training with a variety of animal species. After recognizing the need for ‘dog centered mediation’ during divorce, Karis became an internationally accredited family mediator. After 26 years of experience and working with thousands of dogs, she combines her wealth of knowledge animal behavior with mediation to help her clients make the best decision for their dog’s long-term wellbeing during divorce. Her goal is to help her clients see the dogs not as weapons or leverage against their ex, nor as human children, but as the individuals they are with their own needs. She collaborates with mediators and attorneys worldwide as well as offering regular webinars to educate divorce professionals about pets and divorce. In 2005 Karis moved to South Africa on a vacation, fell in love with the country, and decided to stay put. She lives there with her husband, daughter, 3 cats and 4 dogs. Known for her humane and effective training and behavior solutions, Karis is a nationally known and well-respected dog behavior consultant, regularly appearing on TV and radio in South Africa. She is a judge for the South African Dog Agility Association, and a licensed animal wrangler for the film industry.
