Description

Broadsheet Sydney: Around Town is a biweekly culture podcast that dives deep into Australian food, entertainment, fashion, art and everything in between.
Each Tuesday, we sit down with a person making an impact on culture and the way we live. It could be the founder of a brand we use every day, a restaurateur who’s transformed how we dine, a filmmaker behind a series we can’t stop watching or a bartender shaking up a twist on a classic cocktail.

On Thursdays, hear from a rotating cast of Broadsheet editors on openings and events in Sydney; recommendations as asked for by you; and anything we haven’t been able to stop talking about in the office – all in less than 10 minutes.

Rising returns this winter for its fourth edition. And this year’s iteration of the winter arts festival, which transforms central Melbourne into a nexus of performance, music and art, is the longest one yet. Running from June 1 to June 16, this year’s program has been designed to take in three weekends, with the King’s Birthday long weekend serving as the festival’s climactic midway point. Ziggy Ramo is a Sydney-based musician, writer, and changemaker. His music combines elements of hip-hop, R&B and spoken word poetry to highlight institutional racism, systemic oppression and the diminished life outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. "Find flavour in places you wouldn't realize and savour it." Today, we're joined by one of Melbourne's favourite chefs, Ellie Bouhadana. As Head Chef at Collingwood's Hope St Radio, Ellie dishes up an ever-evolving menu that reflects a wholesome, neighbourly vibe– with souped-up snacks, fresh pastas, and familiar flavours. Now, Ellie has written her first cookbook, which is out next month. It's called Ellie's Table. It's part journal, part advice column, and part recipe book. There's a whole chapter on her famous oily focaccia, the one she makes by hand every single day at Hope Street, and the one she delivered during Melbourne's lockdowns. It also contains stories about her family's influence on her cooking, including her dad's love of mandarins and her mother's halal bread. Ellie shares tips on how thick we should chop zucchinis, what she stocks in her pantry to make sure every meal is packed with flavour, and a recent meal she hosted with martinis and matzah balls. Intimate shows in a former substation and 'gale force' techno at the Opera House. There’s a lot to process when Vivid Sydney reveals its program for the annual festival of light, music, ideas, and food. Vivid Live’s musical performances usually sell out well ahead of the festival. This year looks to be no exception, with the bill including French duo Air, American singer-songwriter Sky Ferreira, UK techno duo Underworld, and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Devonté Hynes. Club nights featuring House of Mince, Mad Racket, and Astral People also return to Sydney Opera House, a time-honored tradition for Vivid Live. Long-serving curator of Vivid Live, Ben Marshall, joins the podcast with his festival cheat sheet. New episodes of Broadsheet Sydney Around Town drop Tuesday and Thursday each week.
