Description
Comedian Kiki Andersen finds the funny in the most uncomfortable corners of our culture. Sex. Politics. Religion. But in the digital age, what can and can’t be talked about at the dinner table has changed dramatically. Indecent is a podcast all about what’s off-limits and who sets the boundaries for today’s taboos. Through conversations with comedians, psychologists, journalists, theologians and scientists, Kiki peels at the wallpaper of polite society on Indecent, where NSFW meets LMAO.

It kinda feels like the lunatics have taken over the asylum when it comes to the American political system these days. And when the going gets tough (and also crazy, Christian extremist) it's always a good idea to call on someone who's escaped the world of gun-toting, climate-denying death cultists to try to figure what planet these people think they're living on. So we tapped political commenters Jesse Dollemore and Brittany Page to steer us through this idiot shitstorm.
Jesse Dollemore is a former Republican veteran of the United States Marine Corps who's worked for the U.S. Senate on Capitol Hill in Washington and on both House and Senate campaigns. With a Master of Science in clinical psychology, Brittany Page has worked in low-cost non-profit clinics, inpatient psychiatric facilities, as well as court-mandated programs to advocate for people struggling with serious mental disorders, homelessness, and substance use disorders. Using her personal experiences growing up immersed in chaos and escaping from her white supremacist upbringing in Idaho combined with her education, she brings a unique perspective to everyday issues. Together they co-host the popular news and comment podcast, I Doubt It. Jesse also helms the hit YouTube series The Dollemore Daily, and Brittany hosts The Page Perspective.

And so... we've come to the end, dear friends. The final curtain call. The buying of the farm. But while the pod is kicking the bucket, in this series finale, terminally-ill comedian Kirsten Michelle Cills and death doula Laura Lyster-Mensh leave us with some wisdom that will live on in our hearts forever... or at least until we're all worm food, too.
Kirsten Michelle Cills is a Philly-born comedian, actor, podcaster, and docuseries subject known for her bold, dry demeanor and the oxygen tank that often accompanies her. Kirsten considers herself truly blessed to spending her 20s as a terminally ill comic who will not live to see any consequences to her actions. When not correcting people’s pronunciation of her name or talking about the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2018 Super Bowl win, Kirsten is committed her addiction to the topics we aren't supposed to discuss at the dinner table. Listen to her show Dying Up Here wherever you get your podcasts!
Laura Collins Lyster-Mensh is an American writer, podcaster, and activist. She has been founding organizations to solve problems all her life, including three international charities. She is the author of four books, and has produced four podcast projects, She is currently active as an end-of-life doula in her service as the Death Doula in residence at Congressional Cemetery in Washington DC and as a volunteer for a DC hospice.

Sure, with The End being so Nigh, you could stock up on Twinkies. Especially considering how much hype they've gotten over the years for their ability to last through a nuclear holocaust! Or you could consisder sustaining yourself with something with an even longer shelf life: more from author Tea Krulos.
Tea Krulos is a freelance journalist and author from Milwaukee, WI. Some of his favorite subjects to explore include subcultures and social movements, weird news, the paranormal, and strange personalities. He also writes about local art and entertainment, lifestyle, and food/drink for publications like Milwaukee Magazine, Shepherd Express, and Milwaukee Record. His five non-fiction books are American Madness, Wisconsin Legends & Lore, Apocalypse Any Day Now, Monster Hunters, and Heroes in the Night. He’s also been published in publications like Atlas Obscura, Fortean Times, and Scandinavian Traveler and writes a weekly column called “Tea’s Weird Week” at teakrulos.com. Krulos was awarded a Gold Milwaukee Press Club Excellence in Journalism Award in 2021 for an article he wrote for Milwaukee Magazine on “citizen journalists” titled “Reporting Live From the Street.” He picked up two more Milwaukee Press Club Awards in 2023 for his Milwaukee Magazine articles “The Last Frame” and “Wanna Buy a Famous Tugboat?” A documentary he is producer on, I’m Your Host, won a 2022 Brico Forward Fun Award. His book American Madness won the National Indie Excellence Book Award in the “Current Events” category. His book Monster Hunters was a finalist in the 2015 Midwest Book Awards.

No matter how prepared you are, you've still got to be pretty lucky to make it through most world-ending scenarios. Or unlucky, depending on how you look at it. Author Tea Krulos doesn't think he'd last long. But after writing a book about doomsday preppers, he thinks it might not be such a bad thing to get wiped out right away.

In the summer of 2020, why were certain lifestyle influencers pivoting to posts about pedos, cabals and evil vaccines? Grab your red string and follow along with host Cristen Conger into the female-dominated landscape of "conspirituality” where wellness and woo-woo get extra delulu. Researcher, journalist and QAnon Anonymous UK correspondent Annie Kelly also unravels anti-vax moms’ medical mistrust, the red-pilled origins of tradwives and why conspiracy theorizing is fangirl behavior.
Conspiracy, She Wrote is an Unladylike Media production, created, written and hosted by Cristen Conger.
If you feel like maybe someone or something sinister is out to get you, tracking your every move and manipulating the circumstances of your life, let tell you that you... are... wrong! There's no secret conspiracy to keep you down, there are just a lot of things about humanity and our world that coincidentally suck. But as we learned from talking more with feminist conspiracy theory podcaster Cristen Conger, nothing will ever stop us from fantasizing about a darker, more narratively pleasing truth lurking just below the surface.
Cristen Conger is the creator and co-host of the Webby Award-winning podcast Unladylike and cofounder of Unladylike Media. Her accidental podcast life began in 2009 as co-creator and co-host of the podcast Stuff Mom Never Told You, now a part of the iHeartMedia network. She's also the co-author of Unladylike: A Field Guide to Smashing the Patriarchy and Claiming Your Space (Ten Speed Press, 2018), which Kirkus Reviews called “a must-have feminist survival guide for the Trump era.” A former weekend contributor at Refinery29, her writing has also appeared on Jezebel, Huffington Post Women, Bitch Media, xoJane and A Practical Wedding. As a seasoned speaker on gender, feminism and women’s histories, Cristen's connected with audiences ranging from summer campers and museumgoers to uniformed coast guards and on stages from SXSW Interactive and Creative Mornings to MailChimp and The Carter Center.

Sometimes you need to touch grass and remember that there are no lizard people secretly ruling our world. Other times, shadowy government agents really are out to get you. And still other times, you're like feminist historian Cristen Conger and you start to wonder why women are so often left out of the conspiracy conversation.

Can you feel it? There's that charged energy in the air that you can almost taste right around when we're starting to get to everyone's favorite time of year. It's almost Election Day! ...Okay, maybe it's every couple of years. ...And maybe it's a massive overreach to say people like it, like, at all. But at least we got you a special gift of more insights from political commentator Ben Sheehan.
Ben Sheehan is a political commentator and digital creator. He has appeared on shows including Real Time with Bill Maher, Good Morning America, Amanpour & Company and more. Ben has won Shorty, Reed, and Webby Awards for his writing and production work. He was named one of entertainment’s “35 Under 35” by The Hollywood Reporter and a “World Changing Ideas” finalist by Fast Company for his approach to civics education. He founded OMG WTF (Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida) to teach voters about state executive races during the 2018 midterms. OMG WTF’s Gerrymander Jewelry was a finalist for Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas 2019. In 2016, he helped register 50,000 voters through digital videos as the executive director of Save the Day. The projects he’s been involved with have received over a billion views.

They say 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' But what do you do with something that's as fundamentally f*cked up and dysfunctional as, say, our current political system? Digital creator Ben Sheehan argues that we give it a facelift and remember why we fell in love with this country in the first place.

There's no business like show business... at least in terms of it kicking the people who make the stuff when they're down. But comedian Ashley Ray and seasoned creator Alex Keledjian still manage to get back up again, even as the corporate overlords reach for a pair of steel-toed boots.

Fashion moves fast. But like, damn... we didn't know it was blasting through the sound barrier lately. Not just in terms of changing taste, but also with the speed at which the industry cranks out cheap, crappy clothes. So we had to do a little cleaning out of the closets with fashion journalist Dana Thomas.

Long ago, OG protest-folk singer Woody Guthrie pasted the slogan "This Machine Kills Fascists" on his guitar to show the world he wasn't playing around. And nearly 80 years later, leftist content creator James Rehwald keeps that spirit alive by infusing sketch comedy with revolutionary optimism to remind everyone the future belongs to us, not the right-wing capitalist overlords.

Start flexing those pelvic floor muscles! We're feeling a big contraction coming on, which means it's time to bring this bonus content with comedian Margaret Cho talking more about being childless-by-choice into the world.
Margaret Cho is a comedian, actor, musician, advocate, entrepeneur and artist. Right as she was starting her stand-up career at age 14, Margaret won a comedy contest to open for Jerry Seinfeld in the early ’90s. She performed over 300 concerts within two years. Arsenio Hall introduced her to late night audiences, Bob Hope put her on a prime time special and, seemingly overnight, Margaret Cho became a household name. Her groundbreaking, controversial ABC sitcom, All-American Girl (1994) soon followed. In 1999, her groundbreaking Off-Broadway one-woman show, I’m The One That I Want, toured to national acclaim and was made into both a best-selling book and feature film of the same name. Margaret returned to television in 2008 with the VH1 series, The Cho Show. 2010 culminated with another high honor, a second Grammy Award nomination for Comedy Album of the Year for Cho Dependent, her incredibly funny music album. Margaret’s creative side moved full speed ahead with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress on 30 Rock, where she played Kim Jong II. The five-time Grammy and Emmy nominee released her second studio album, American Myth, earning her another Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine named her one of the 50 Best Stand-Up Comics, calling her “the sort of funny, sex-positive feminist and LGBT activist younger comics continue to look up to.”

The amount of people out there who secretly (or not so secretly) drink their own urine or wear cooch-juice cologne would probably shock you. But no matter what kind of weird stuff people do to their bodies, writer Brigid Delaney wants them to know they're gonna die anyways. So why worry?
Brigid Delaney is a speechwriter, former author of popular weekly Guardian column ‘Brigid Delaney’s Diary,’ and co-founder of the anti-death penalty advocacy group The Mercy Campaign. Her book about her own journey from hot mess to health consciousness was made into the Netflix comedy series Wellmania. Her latest book Reasons Not to Worry is "an accessible introduction to Stoic principles of virtue, moderation and self-discipline, adapting this ancient knowledge to inspire practical advice for everyday life."

If we haven't made it clear yet, Indecent's main guiding principle is pretty simple: no narcs allowed. Especially when we invite academic and author Benjamin Y. Fong over to hang out in our parents' basement to talk drugs, drug policy, and drug culture, and how Americans especially love to get smashed.

No matter how you slice it, taste is subjective. Afterall, some of you probably argue that kombucha doesn't have the same flavor profile as horse piss. But one undeniable truth that food anthropologist Dr. Lauren Crossland-Marr genereously serves up is that there some pretty wild things going on with what we eat.
Dr. Lauren Crossland-Marr is a cultural anthropologist, who currently teaches at the University of Delaware. She previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher with GEAP-3, a network of social scientists exploring the application of the gene-editing technology CRISPR to agriculture and foodways. As part of the project, she wrote, hosted, and researched the podcast A CRISPR Bite. The use of technology in food was also the focus of her dissertation research project.

The truth can be tricky. Especially with things like photoshop and deep fakes casting doubt on everything from geopolitical conflicts to whether or not your favorite Insta model had buccal fat removal. Most of us probably have a healthy skepticism of everything we scroll past. But writer Natalie Beach knows from her friendship with influencer/OG scam queen Caroline Calloway that the journey through the little rectangular looking glasses in our hands goes way deeper than we think...
Natalie Beach is an essayist, screenwriter, amateur handyman, and feminist killjoy based in Los Angeles. She also produces film and television with her husband through their company Video House. Her new book Adult Drama and Other Essays is out now from Hanover Square Press.

You've probably seen them before, either online or IRL. It's the dead-eyed weirdos filming TikTok dances while blocking traffic or pranking innocent fast food employees that we all seemingly love to hate. And writer Natalie Beach draws on her personal experience to come to terms with the fact that they're not going anywhere.

Spooky Season may only come once a year. But you can always keep a special place in your heart for the spirit of clawed, drooling monstrosities that want to tear off your flesh or plant their eggs in your brain, year round. That's why we gave folklore historian J.W. Ocker even more space to unleash these nightmares on you, the unsuspecting listeners...
J.W. Ocker is the award-winning author of macabre travelogues, spooky kid’s books, and horror novels. His nonfictions books include The New England Grimpendium and The New York Grimpendium (both Lowell Thomas Award winners), Poe-Land: The Hallowed Haunts of Edgar Allan Poe (Edgar Award winner), A Season with the Witch: The Magic and Mayhem of Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts, and Cursed Objects: Strange But True Stories of the World's Most Infamous Items. His novels for kids include Death and Douglas, The Smashed Man of Dread End, and The Black Slide. Ocker is also the creator of OTIS: Odd Things I've Seen, where he chronicles his visits to thousands of oddities of culture, art, nature, and history across the country and world with photos, articles, and through Odd Things I've Seen: The Podcast. His work has appeared on or in CNN.com, The Atlantic, Rue Morgue, the Boston Globe, The Guardian, TIME, and other places people stick writing. They lurk in your unlit basement or under your kid's bed, in crumbling old houses and the bushes outside cheerleader's slumber parties. Come to think of it, some creatures of the night aren't just physically dangerous. They kinda have a creepy, Cosby-like, "cop a feel while you're sleeping" type vibe. So we asked horror writer J.W. Ocker to help find the source of our fascination with these frightening figures.

It's always "Hail Satan," and never "How is Satan?" Seriously, he must be really burnt out from being the source of all of everyone's problems for thousands of years. American Hysteria host Chelsey Weber-Smith continues to point out that he's the OG scapegoat. But he's far from the only boogeyman we blame when things in our world go badly.
Chelsey Weber-Smith is the writer, co-producer, and host of American Hysteria, a show that investigates our moral panics, urban legends, conspiracy theories, and archetypes, basically our special brand of fantastical thinking. They also write country music and rambles around the United States building campfires and hoping for the best. Chelsey is a graduate of the University of Virginia's MFA program in poetry and has written and self-published two chapbooks, a travel memoir, and two full-length folk/country albums, and was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Their work has been published in BOAAT, Transom, Matter, Wu-Wei Fashion Mag, the James Franco Review, and Miracle Monocle. They currently live in Seattle.

If you found out all of your neighbors, co-workers and vague acquaintances were cannibalistic, demon-worshipping child molesters, would that make you feel better or worse about the nature of reality, overall? American Hysteria's host Chelsey Weber-Smith calls out the Devil as a convenient scapegoat for people who want to oversimplify the problems facing our world.

In February it's Black Power fists. In June it's rainbow flags. Corporations are so quick to co-opt any cultural symbol they can, it's hard to believe there are any that won't end up stenciled onto the side of a Starbucks cup as soon as it's seasonally appropriate. But marketing maven Katie Martell knows so much more about how to cut through their bullsh*t and expose just how "woke" these companies really are.
Katie Martell is the author and producer of "Woke-Washed," a book, lecture and documentary exploring what happens when marketing and social movements collide. Her professional adventures include communications consulting, startup marketing and SaaS entrepreneur-ing, and her work’s been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Adweek, CNBC, and at conferences and universities around the world. And she's been been named “one of the most interesting people in B2B marketing" a top voice in marketing on LinkedIn 3X, and an Adweek Pride Star.

Ever wonder why an international burger chain feels the need to weigh in on whether or not you're banging people of a different gender every June? Well, let marketing consultant Katie Martell, author of "Woke-Washed," break down why so many corporations try to cash in on the "minority of the month," and so often end up with their foot in their mouth.

We have nothing to fear but our romantic partners, business associates, neighbors and random lunatics, all of whom seem to be capable of knifing us in the back at a moment's notice, apparently. At least that's what psychologist Dr. Amanda Vicary says our true crime obsession is training us to believe, and she has more to say on what that means for our society.
Dr. Amanda Vicary is the Chair of the Psychology Department at Illinois Wesleyan University. She teaches courses on crime and the justice system, gender, and social psychology, in addition to researching topics related to the criminal justice system. She has written for The Atlantic, appeared on NPR multiple times to discuss her work, and been featured as an expert by Investigation Discovery.

Staircase spills, ODing on pills, or getting terminally ill. There are a thousand ways to die out there. But the public doesn't pay much attention to the way most of us meet our end unless it gets turned into a Netflix docuseries about how a beloved neighbor was caught burying the body. So we asked true crime expert Dr. Amanda Vicary to break out the CSI black lights and help us understand our obsession with stabbings and strangulation.

You've probably heard of adrenaline junkies. But what about anger addicts? Well as the hosts of the I Doubt It podcast Jesse Dollemore and Brittany Page point out, tons of people in this country are hooked on hating people that don't believe in straight white Jesus. And it makes them a lot easier to control!

We wouldn't dare leave you there doom-scrolling all week while you wait for another episode, especially when disinformation expert Bridget Todd has boundless wisdom to share on how to navigate the murky waters of the interweb. So strap-in for a little more adviceways to fight for a newsfeed that doesn't drive you insane.
Bridget Todd got her start teaching courses on writing and social change at Howard University. Since then, she's trained human rights activists in Australia, coordinated digital strategy for organizations like Planned Parenthood, the Women's March, and MSNBC, and ran a training program for political operatives that the Washington Post called the Democratic Party’s “Hogwarts for digital wizardry.” You can hear Bridget on her critically acclaimed podcast There Are No Girls On The Internet and the Next Chapter Podcasts original series Beef with Bridget Todd. A current focus of Bridget’s digital activism is disinformation. She worked in a coalition that created resources to help identify and combat disinformation ahead of the 2020 election. Bridget wrote an editorial in Newsweek about it, and it’s a recurring topic on TANGOTI. She got her start in the podcast world as a producer for MoveOn.org’s flagship podcast in 2012. She cohosted iHeartMedia’s Stuff Mom Never Told You bringing feminist issues and activism to 2 million ears a month. She’s also teamed up with culture and arts brand AfroPunk to host a global salon where she’s talked to high-profile activists and creatives like Ava Duvernay and #MeToo creator Tarana Burke.

With Twitter crumbling into an edge lord's wet dream, Facebook fading into obscurity as basically an old folks home, and Instagram just existing as it always has, where is the discourse really supposed to happen? Digital activist Bridget Todd says wherever it ends up, it has to be a place where everything from thirst traps to terror attack updates can coexist and marginalized voices can be heard.

So we asked comedian Natalie McGill and Bill Conway, co-founder of The Hard Times, how to stay sane... and maybe even crack a smile?

From back pain to building plans to bodily autonomy, artist and activist Viva Ruíz believes all things were created with the intention of being embraced as necessary parts of life. So we wanted to show her some more love by giving her a little extra time to explain why abortion shouldn't be swept under society's rug.
Viva Ruíz, whose work has been featured in festivals and art spaces across the U.S. and Europe, uses their artwork to fight for reproductive healthcare access and freedom. In 2015, they founded the "Thank God for Abortion" initiative, which employs various means such as t-shirt designs, art installations, rallies, and parties to destigmatize abortion and normalize it as a necessary part of healthcare. If you're not familiar with their work, they received a Creative Capital Artistic Activism Award in 2022. Check out this amazing picture of them dressed as the Pope, standing outside the Vatican with a giant sign that reads "Thank God for Abortion."
