We’ve been applying this idea to many different ideas: courage, waiting, hospitality, gender, ect. Questions:1. Who gets to tell you who you are? (whether you know it or not, you have to wrestle withthis daily!)2. What holds your affection(s)? What is the object of your desire(s)? (The answer to thisquestion may help you with the first question!)3. A mind-blowing statement: Something you never knew: You have a body! This is brilliant! If you remember nothing else, remember this! Why would I be saying these things? Today we are talking about gender: Radical Gender.Every week we review what it looks like to follow Jesus:Luke 9:2323 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and takeup his cross daily, and follow me.Last week when we talked about Radical Submission, you should have noticed that things aregetting harder! If you are going to follow Jesus, everything is on the table, including your gender.Gender is a hard word: it’s getting more weird and complicated as time goes on. Some of youwould say your gender is Male and Female. However, we need to get to the core of this anddeal with it! We need to think about the questions above.Let’s start with the waters that we swim in: The items in the list below all contribute answers to“Who are you?” “What is the object of your affection?” and “You have a body.”Continually ReadingLinks to Healing the CityEric's StorySexualitySupport the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is a weekly source of inspiration and guidance for the community. Two ideas to wrestle with today:We are all parents: you are a parent if you are in the kingdom of God.and  Who is God calling you to parent? Radical parenting looks at parenting in a different way than you might think of it. In Mark 3,  Jesus has been called insane and accused of being the devil and his family is worried.  This morning, we read I Peter 2:2-9. This was written by Peter, an apostle, and you can read his story in the Gospels and Acts. Peter wrote I and II Peter but most likely he dictated the first and wrote the second himself. The reason for that is that I Peter is a piece of beautiful literature and II Peter is just about the worst! This is an interesting sidenote. We are in a series called Radical Discipleship: every single topic in this series is prefigured by “Radical” because we are talking about things that are extreme, cutting to the root or base of a matter. What are the basics, the essence, of following Jesus and how can we do this in the most extreme way possible?Luke 9:23: “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” This is pretty darn extreme and radical!Today, the topic is evangelism: I thought this topic was one of the most impactful things in my life and that I should share concerns about this topic.  Teaser questions:Where are you in chains?Who are you chained to?Read More HereSupport the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is a weekly source of inspiration and guidance for the community. Ask this question: Is it worth it? (There is a Worth It TV show where they talk about items, tacos for example, at different price points and then they decide which one is truly worth it.) We need to ask “Is it really worth it to deny myself and take up my cross”? Is this worth it? We need to know what Jesus is offering because there is no reason to do this otherwise.  If you read the NT, you could give a comprehensive statement of what is being offered. Even so, we still ask this question.John 8:1-12, The story of the adulterous woman. It’s important to understand the context of this narrative: there is a large gathering and the people wanted to trap Jesus to get rid of him.Continue reading hereSupport the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is a weekly source of inspiration and guidance for the community. You can be radical for many reasons; radical means either getting down to the core of something or extreme. You can be a radical (extreme) fan of a football team. Discipleship means following Jesus and it can be extreme as Jesus said “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Your agenda is submitted under Jesus’s way. Also, you have to do this every day which is also extreme: the essence of following Jesus. Last week I asked, “What are youavoiding?” when we talked about radical courage. This week I have two questions to ponder:What are you waiting for?Whom are you waiting on?As parents we are always waiting: Every-day waiting can be in the doctors, at stoplights, for a spouse to get ready, for a kid to get out of the bathroom. But there are bigger things to wait for: a spouse, a job, money, depression to go away, an ailment to go away. Waiting can be daily and ordinary and it can also be big and dramatic.Continue Reading HERESupport the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is a weekly source of inspiration and guidance for the community. Radical Courage is the first sermon in the Radical Discipleship series. Why radical? In planning for this series of sermons, there was one sermon called radical hospitality and one called radical evangelism and we figured out that everything is radical when you follow Jesus: in fact, Jesus said you have to deny yourself and take up your cross. We connect ourselves with crosses today but in the days of Jesus, the Roman empire kept people in line with crosses. People didn’t talk about this. It’s extreme and intense; likewise, it’s these when we follow Jesus. Today we will talk about radical courage: most know what courage is: we want more than we have and we want to give each other more courage. I want to look at this more closely: my question to you today: what or who are you avoiding? Is that too deep of a question? Some avoid everything! We all avoid things…but how do we begin this analysis? This is a key way to begin this analysis; in fact, we should be asking this question all the time. Read the entire sermon: hereSupport the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is a weekly source of inspiration and guidance for the community. In his recent sermon on John 5:16-47, Pastor Eric illuminates how Jesus openly declares His divinity, underlining the fundamental truth that Jesus being God is essential for Christianity's significance. He insightfully discusses our common struggle: we often seek honor and validation from one another rather than turning our eyes towards God. This quest for human approval can lead us away from truly listening to and trusting in the Father. Pastor Eric encourages us to shift our focus back to God, reminding us that our faith and identity should be rooted in Him above all. Through this message, we're invited to deepen our relationship with Jesus, recognizing Him as God and reorienting our lives to seek divine, not human, approval.Support the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is a weekly source of inspiration and guidance for the community. Pastor Michael Cousineau recently guided us through an insightful exploration of John 4, delivering a sermon that was both engaging and thought-provoking. He skillfully illuminated the lengths to which Jesus traveled, not just in physical distance, but also in breaking societal norms by conversing alone with a Samaritan woman. Pastor Michael adeptly navigated the complex dynamics of this encounter, revealing how Jesus simultaneously perplexed and enlightened both the woman and his disciples. In a compelling conclusion, he invited the congregation to imaginatively place themselves within the narrative, encouraging a deeper understanding through the lens of the various characters' interactions with Jesus. This approach not only enriched our comprehension of the biblical text but also offered profound insights into our personal spiritual journeys.Support the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is a weekly source of inspiration and guidance for the community. Pastor Eric Cepin explores John Chapter 2, posing the critical question: "What do you want from Jesus?" This inquiry challenges us to reflect on our intentions in seeking Christ. Unlike earthly figures, Jesus cannot be controlled, yet His love for us is unwavering. Pastor Eric emphasizes the importance Jesus places on the motives behind our worship. He acts, not out of condemnation, but to refine and redirect our devotion towards authenticity.Further, Pastor Eric sheds light on Jesus' interaction with His mother in John 2. This exchange between mother and son reveals a contrast in agendas. It's a compelling example of how human plans often differ from divine purpose, yet in Jesus' response, we find wisdom and grace.
