Everyone knows what physicians do. We go to them when we’re sick, they examine us and prescribe a treatment. In this case, we’re the patient. But what happens when the patient isn’t a single individual, but a community, a society, a nation, or perhaps even the world? What happens when the healing that most needs to occur is at the level of the system? That’s where the practice of public health comes in. In this episode, we discuss what public health is, why it’s important, and we zoom in on a few specific public health issues, including our ailing healthcare system, the dangers of racial disparities in health and healthcare, and the looming effects of social media on youth mental health. Host David B. Feldman speaks with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, physician, epidemiologist, host of the “America Dissected” podcast, and author of three books, including Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic. Join Nurse Rona and Mark Dowie, author, journalist, former publisher, editor of Mother Jones magazine, and editor-at-large of InterNation. They will discuss his most recent book, Judith Letting Go. It’s about his friendship with poet Judith Tannenbaum during the last months of her life. The post 3/25/24 Helping a loved one die appeared first on KPFA.
Kids are under great pressure. In our daunting world, many children receive the message at a very young age that they’ve got to do everything perfectly in order to get ahead. They’re also looking at social media, comparing themselves to others, and often end up feeling not good enough, as a result. Self-compassion is needed more than ever. This episode’s guest has written a book that she hopes will help teach children to practice greater self-compassion, to be kinder to themselves in the midst of all the stress. We explore that book, how its story applies to our children, as well as what we adults can learn for ourselves. How does shame change the brain? How can self-compassion not only help make people happier, but also encourage them to be more compassionate towards others? And what can parents do about it? These are just some of the questions Host David B. Feldman talks about with psychologist, professor, and author, Dr. Shauna Shapiro. According to a survey conducted by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication, one in 10 Americans report experiencing anxiety because of global warming. Join Nurse Rona and her guests, Anya Kamenetz and Matt Renner, to discuss why we need to talk about Climate and Mental Health and how to talk to young people about climate emotions. If you experience anxiety in your life, you’re not alone. As we discuss in this episode, anxiety is one of most frequent problems that brings people into psychotherapists’ offices. Perhaps not surprisingly, there are no magical cures when it comes to anxiety, and different techniques and strategies work for different people. For this reason, our guest has written a book filled with dozens of practical tips to help manage anxiety, some taking as little as five minutes but potentially making a big difference in how we feel, from positive affirmations to ways of grounding ourselves in the present moment. Host David B. Feldman speaks with Edie Savage-Weeks, psychotherapist and author of the new book, Heal Your Anxiety Now! Five-Minute Tools for Moving Beyond Surviving into Thriving. 2/5/24 Embracing Shame

2024-02-0559:58

Shame is a universal social emotion meant to keep us out of trouble. It may be expressed in many ways including perfectionism or feeling worthless. It can be hard to detect shame since it can bind with other emotions, such as grief, anger, or fear. Shame can be transformed from a self-punishing emotion into an ally, supporting our well being and health. Nurse Rona will be joined by Bret Lyon, PhD, and Sheila Rubin, MA, LMFT, authors of Embracing Shame.  The post 2/5/24 Embracing Shame appeared first on KPFA.

Have you ever had a friend who seemed to drain all your emotional energy? Or perhaps a family member who was always in your business, trying to tell you how to live your life? It’s an inevitable part of many relationships: There will be times—even with the people we love most—when it’s important to set limits, ask for what we need, or give feedback about what’s not working for us. But these limits, sometimes called “boundaries,” can be challenging and awkward to set. So, this hour, we’ll talk about why it’s not only okay but sometimes necessary to set boundaries in relationships, and how doing so can strengthen our connections. Host David B. Feldman speaks with Juliane Taylor Shore, psychotherapist and author of the new book, Setting Boundaries That Stick. The post 1/22/24 Setting Healthy Boundaries appeared first on KPFA.
The harsh reality is that not all patients are treated equally, and racism has consequences on a person’s health and health care. An Associated Press wire story from 1966, contained Dr. King’s famous quotation regarding injustice in health care—“Of all the forms of in-equality, injustice in health, is the most shocking and in-human.” Join Nurse Rona and Dr. Micheal Lenoir in conversation. Good oral health is a critical component of health for adults and children. It not only helps prevent problems like cavities and gum disease but also contributes to overall wellbeing. Maintaining good oral health through oral hygiene, healthy nutrition, and receiving preventive and early dental care can reduce the risk of systemic diseases, improve self-esteem, and support good nutrition. Join Nurse Rona and her guests, Dr. Jared Fine and Dr. Bahar Amanzadeh. The post 1/8/24 Oral Health: A Vital Part Of Good Health appeared first on KPFA.

This week, we talk with a luminary cardiologist about the heart in two senses.  First, we discuss how to take care of our hearts in the physical sense: What to do to keep our hearts healthy and beating for a long time to come. But, we all know there’s another, more metaphorical and perhaps even spiritual way of talking about our heart. It’s the organ to which we often attribute love, care, sadness, and many of our deepest feelings. So, we have a wide-ranging conversation, asking our guest what drew her to the field in the first place, how she approaches taking care of patients, and what deeper lessons she’s drawn from her work. Host David B. Feldman interviews Dr. Anu Lala, cardiologist and associate professor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. The post 12/18/23 Taking Care of Our Hearts appeared first on KPFA.
