•FBOL is now on Patreon! Subscribe: http://www.patreon.com/fuckboisoflit•The podcast about the most groan-worthy, enraging, and sh*t characters in lit. Join host Emily Edwards and a guest for a weekly "book club" discussion on every book you wanted to destroy in English class, but couldn't. Classic literature of Europe and the Americas– everything from mythology to Victorian epics to the modernists– is hard to get through, and each week, we take on a frequently assigned book to talk about all of its highs and lows. These are the Fuckbois of Literature.

Hi, everyone!Unfortunately, circumstances are way outside my control and this is the last episode of FBOL. I want to thank you all endlessly for being such an amazing community and audience. I had some fantastic books on the schedule, but because all of my equipment is toast and I don't know where I'll be living, when, and for how long, recording new episodes is off the table. The person who finds me with the best Attic Wife joke gets my enduring love. Please send some support to Cayce Osborne, who is an absolute gem and fantastic writer:https://cayceosborne.com/ Hosted on Acast. Bianca Hernandez-Knight (@BookHoarding) is back for the first time since our Northanger Abbey episode to discuss Jane Austen and the politics of adapting her. We're focusing on Nikki Payne's brilliant "Pride + Protest," but it's a multifaceted conversation about interacting with Austen, her world, and ours. Step aside, tradwives. Jane belongs to other people now.Find Bianca across social media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/biancahernandez/?hl=en Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/0368683034fe/bookhoarding Linktree for others: https://linktr.ee/bookhoarding Find FBOL's patreon here: http://www.patreon.com/fuckboisoflit Hosted on Acast. I am not above telling you that I suffered through our last three books. They were awful, and they made me sad, not in the way that TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES made me sad, but sad for real life people. But this book doesn't. Not one bit.Lynne Childress's podcast, FINE BEATS AND CHEESES, is also a wonderful time, so please do go listen to it. I had no idea until about two weeks ago that the classic 1946 Christmas movie, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was based on a self-published short story called "The Greatest Gift." And not until last week did I, you know, read it in order to prep for this episode. You can read it here, if you want: https://www.tor.com/2008/12/25/the-greatest-gift/ That being said, most of the beats you know from the movie are there: the bridge, the angel, the regret, the rejoicing. It has a lot going on in a few thousand words. David and I get into it, and America, and PTSD, and small towns, and Marlo Thomas. You can find David online here: https://linktr.ee/carriagereturn And you can join me in Portugal next May by clicking here: https://www.trovatrip.com/trip/europe/portugal/portugal-with-emily-edwards-may-2024 Because what I say in the episode is true: I don't want to be the George Bailey of my friend group. And unfortunately, I haven't run into any angels lately, so I guess what Annie Lennox says is true: Sisters are doin' it for themselves. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Well, as I mentioned the other day on socials, FBOL is coming to an indeterminate end. We've been limping along for a few months here in Season 5, but I think the show has run out of steam. I can't thank you enough for keeping FBOL alive for this many years, and how much good we've managed to do with Patreon, too. You helped keep this show on the road, and helped support a lot of necessary charities over the years, too.As I mention in the audio, I am still doing a podcast called Ticklish Business with my friend Kristen and her co-host Samantha, so if you want to check out the show, please click here to do so! You can find me on socials:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/msemilyedwards/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/msemilyedwards.bsky.social Threads: https://www.threads.net/@msemilyedwards Twitter, if we must: https://twitter.com/MsEmilyEdwards And a newsletter/blog: https://msemilyedwards.com/blog  Hosted on Acast. I don't have a new episode this week, but I wanted to post another rerun from our past talking about queer lit for Pride 2023! Let's harken back to our first ever season in 2019 to re-listen to our episode on CALL ME BY YOUR NAME by André Aciman. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Link to a review of a biography of Patricia Highsmith: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/highsmith-was-a-troll-on-richard-bradfords-devils-lusts-and-strange-desires/ For Pride 2023, we're re-posting some of our favorite episodes about Queer books. As it turns out, Patricia Highsmith was another one of those common birds, a midcentury writer of the antisemite variety, whose advanced-level bigotries really don’t come come up in the same breath as the praises heaped upon her, and they should. She was shitty. But THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY is a fantastic novel, colored by Highsmith's own hatreds, and her ultimate goals. Follow our guest Danny Bowes on Twitter @ByBowes SUMMARYTom Ripley is hounded by a rich Richard Greenleaf Sr. to go to Italy and retrieve his son, Dickie Greenleaf, and bring him back to America for his mother's impending death. Once Tom finds Dickie, he murders the heir and takes on his identity, while avoiding capture in post-WWII Italy.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
