Boston, NY (Small Town WNY PBS-TV Series - Podcast #1.8)My guest today is the historian for the town of Boston. I asked Frank to come onto the podcast as I think Boston is a bit of a mystery to many WNYer's along with Springville, Marilla, Colden and a few others down in this area. If you don't live there or have friends or family there, you probably rarely have ventured into the town. Well, OK, maybe you've stopped off for gas off of the 219 on your way to parts south, but next time you do, try taking the 277 down through the entirety of the town all the way through to Springville for a real treat. Especially in Fall. I promise, you won't be disappointed. From my very first drive through the town and hills and valleys there, I got a dead-on Vermont vibe that continually surprised me around every corner. Frank helped clarify the town's history a bit and offered some great antidotes throughout our conversation and perfectly illustrated how much history the town has. Boston offers some truly unique WNY businesses and experiences and I highly recommend taking a short drive to the town when you get the chance.
Alyx & Anthony's Wallpaper & Decor, West Seneca, NY (Small Town WNY TV Series - Companion Podcast #9)Alyx & Anthony Wallpaper & Decor3906 Seneca St, West Seneca, NY 14224Phone: +1 716 300 2888https://alyxandanthonys.comAlyx & Anthony are part of a new breed and generation of WNY entrepreneurs that are truly making an impact an difference in the region as the old guard passes away and with it, the proverbial torch onto this new adventurous generation that has decided to stay here in WNY , see things through and make the change where it matters most. In your hometown. They are young, hyper-creative and an example of how to fill a much-needed niche in the market.
Small Town WNY PBS-TV Series - Companion Podcast #2Marilla Country Store1673 Two Rod Rd, Marilla, NY 14102-9726+1 716 655 1031https://marillacountrystore.comOn this episode of the Small Town WNY's companion podcast, I talk with Sandy from the Marilla Country store. For many WNY'rs the Marilla Country store IS Marilla... and has become a destination location in it's own right. For generations, the store has been one of a handful of go to "Happy places" for the entire region. It's a really special place that means many things to many people and Sandy and her Husband Paul couldn't have done a better job of curating and stewarding this piece of living WNY history. It's actually the oldest, continual operating store in NYS and is really something to see if you've never been there, and if you have, we'll then, you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about...
Small Town WNY PBS-TV Series - Companion Podcast #4Runner's Roost4190 N Buffalo Rd, Orchard Park, NY 14127Phone: +1 716 662 1331https://therunnersroost.comRunner's Roost in Orchard Park and now with a new location on transit in East Amherst, has become one of a handful of business brands in WNY that far exceed their demographic and specific industry. The brand has become synonymous with WNY in the same way Mighty Taco and Bert's Bikes and Ted's and so many others have become. It's been around for decades and the good will the shop and it's owners have spread throughout the community for so many years, is in fact, why I think the store and the brand have manged to make such an important impact in the community here. I sat down with the owner, Rob, early one morning, in the backroom of the Orchard Park location as the employees were starting to come in for their shifts, to talk about all things Runner's Roost, life, business and the all things WNY...
Small Town WNY PBS-TV Series - Companion Podcast #7 Springville Hardware - True Value46 E Main St, Springville, NY 14141Phone: (716) 592-7012Springville True Value is a third generation family business that has been part of the fabric of the Village Community in Springville for decades and has seen the ups and downs of not only the Village itself but like any long-term WNY business, the region as a whole. Springville is a town that is truly coming into it's own with a resurgence of new, young entrepreneurs taking the helm and guiding the town into a very bright future. And my guest today, Luke is doing just that with Springville True Value. If you haven't been to the town in awhile, I can only urge you to get down there the next time you're feeling the urge for a nice weekend drive. Luke, along with his parents and grandparents have owned the store since 1986 and are doing a truly wonderful job and and even have a fourth generation now coming into the fold..._____________________________________________________Small Town, NY episodes can be seen between the shows on PBS on stations all across the state of NY, here on YouTube, smalltownny.com & on all major social media platforms!SMALL TOWN NY: Fresh off the hot-heels of the pandemic and my initial PBS travel show, "Discovering WNY", "Small Town NY" is my second PBS series that finds me exploring small towns throughout the entire state. Small Town WNY PBS-TV Series - Companion Podcast #5Farmer's Daughters' Diner11520 Bullis Rd., Marilla, New York 14102Phone: +1 (716) 714-9010The Farmer's Daughter's' Diner in Marilla NY is in the best tradion of American Small Town Diners and has been recently opened by longtime friends Julie, Ken and... . Stepping inside the diner for the first time, really drove the point home to me of just how important it is for any businesses to meet the expectation you have in your minds eye when you're walking into the place. And when your minds eye and the businesses name, architecture, decor and offerings all work in perfect unison, all you can do is just smile and soak it all in. And from the looks of the satiated, happy diners when I sauntered into the place for the first time sometime on an average weekday afternoon a few months ago, Farmer's Daughter does just that. It offers all the warmth and charm and great food that we've all come to expect from a place like this and Julie, ... and along with their head chef Jamie, are doing it right..._____________________________________________________Small Town, NY episodes can be seen between the shows on PBS on stations all across the state of NY, here on YouTube, smalltownny.com & on all major social media platforms!SMALL TOWN NY: Fresh off the hot-heels of the pandemic and my initial PBS travel show, "Discovering WNY", "Small Town NY" is my second PBS series that finds me exploring small towns throughout the entire state. Small Town WNY PBS-TV Series - Companion Podcast #6716 Fresh6120 Seneca St, Elma, NY 14059Phone: (716) 662-7255https://716fresh.comAs a society, us Americans are dealing with an interesting time period in the history of the food industry. On one side, we have the health continuous and local and on the other, we have the overly commoditized, commercialized and stripped of mostly any health benefit. Whether it's a restaurant or a grocery store, like all things now, we are an ever increasingly polarized society here in the US and where your tastes fall on the spectrum that is the modern food parade, for many of us, falls upon where you are with your own health and personal awareness. Let's be honest here, we're raised in a gluttonous, never-ending dirge of fast-food, convenient noise and it's literally killing us by the millions every year. And that's exactly where a place like 716 Fresh is so vitally important. It offers a real choice and a better alternative when it could not be more important to have one. 716 Fresh offers a truly healthy but just as tasty, fast, home made and locally sourced menu. They've just added a new deli and the patio is open for business. I recently spoke with the owner Corey about what exactly inspired him to take the plunge into the restaurant business and most certainly what inspired him to create such a beautifully necessary restaurant that features a roster of ever-changing, many times seasonal, super-tasty and truly healthy dishes. _____________________________________________________Small Town, NY episodes can be seen between the shows on PBS on stations all across the state of NY, here on YouTube, smalltownny.com & on all major social media platforms!SMALL TOWN NY: Fresh off the hot-heels of the pandemic and my initial PBS travel show, "Discovering WNY", "Small Town NY" is my second PBS series that finds me exploring small towns throughout the entire state. You can even combine the wine with a flower and gift delivery or just pop in and pick up a bottle or two. I recently had the opportunity to speak with the owner, Mary, about their history and their place in the community and their very bright future as Marilla continues to become a prime example of a town that is very smartly managing it's growth, not loosing the very thing that draws people to it in the process of that growth... _______________________________________________Small Town, NY episodes can be seen between the shows on PBS on stations all across the state of NY, here on YouTube, smalltownny.com & on all major social media platforms!SMALL TOWN NY: Fresh off the hot-heels of the pandemic and my initial PBS travel show, "Discovering WNY", "Small Town NY" is my second PBS series that finds me exploring small towns throughout the entire state.
