We had a great time talking about the science of listening to your body. The information she shares will change your life!Kristi Barker is a Physiotherapist from Saskatchewan Canada and is known on all social platforms as @reach.rehab and is the founder of Reach Rehab. She played division 1 volleyball in Arkansas for 4 years and then obtained her Master’s of Physical Therapy in Saskatchewan, Canada. Kristi recognized the lack of access to Physiotherapy after she went to Uganda Africa to help distribute wheelchairs to people with disabilities. When covid happened she started posting to instagram in efforts to help increase access to healthcare for those in need and educate on mobility, strength, and injury prevention. Kristi is taking online appointments and recently launched a Back Program that is offered on an app, in which 1/3 of the donations are given to a charity that provides wheelchairs to people with disabilities. In fact, the same charity she went to Uganda with prior to covid. Kristi plans to continue designing programs to keep you pain and injury free, and wants to continue to give back in the best way she knows how. We can heat up a meal in 30 seconds that might have taken an hour to cook from scratch. For this reason, it has become extremely easy to take a seasonal or temporary approach to health, one that is focused on step by step processes and numerically measurable results. If I eat this way, I can lose 30 pounds in three months. If I go to the gym this many times, I will gain this much muscle by summer time. This sort of thinking is what tends to keep people bound to negative cycle of diets, training and weight fluctuation, instead of truly attaining the freedom of a healthy body. In this episode, I talk about the crucial necessity of viewing health as a lifestyle, instead of a season, so that we stop just “doing healthy things” and become healthy people! This is the identity shift that leads to the most important results for you, your family, and generations to come. I have spent the past 2 months questioning everything about my life. Ok, maybe not everything, but a lot! And through this process of analyzing and evaluating, I've come to realize how important it is to constantly assess the systems in life that we put in place. Without this, it's impossible to know what's working for us, and what is working against us. But we can't stop there; we also have to refine the systems in our lives and make hard cuts when necessary. Your health plays a critical role in the design and quality of life. In fact, it is arguably one of the most important factors in deciding your quality of life; it is extremely hard, and in many cases impossible, to exceed the limitation of deteriorated or damaged health caused by unhealthy eating habits. Obesity is one of the largest health concerns in the nation, and as we've discussed, it is a disease which stems from choice. Although this may sound bleak, from the right perspective, it is actually a source of hope. After all, if obesity is a choice, and ultimately up to you and your eating habits, then you can make an equally impactful choice to live a healthy and fit lifestyle instead.
