Join us as Hunter Bowen, one of the authors of the Meant for Good Bible study, shares with us the process of writing a Bible study and how the story of Joseph encourages us to see the redemption story through the whole Bible.Materials for further study:-From Prison to Prince: The Joseph Story in Biblical Theology by Samuel Emadi-The New American Commentary Genesis 11:27-50:26 by Kenneth A. After many years of living in true harmony with his brothers, Jacob's death stirs up old fears. Joseph's brothers begin to wonder if, after all this time, Joseph will seek revenge for the suffering they caused him. In their fear, they send a message that pleads for forgiveness. But Joseph’s response is one of grace and mercy. He asked a profound rhetorical question: “ Am I in the place of God?” He understands that God uses their wrongdoing for good, for His glory.Join us today to go deeper into the last pages of the book of Genesis!
Jacob’s blessings with Abby Patrick(Genesis 46-49)The story of Jacob’s blessing emphasizes that God’s plans go beyond human failings. Though imperfect, Jacob’s sons play a role in God’s redemptive story. Judah, in particular, becomes a symbol of leadership and a reminder of the Messianic promise that God can use anyone, no matter their past, to fulfill His divine purpose.Materials for further study:-Bible Talk by 9 Marks Genesis 48–50: On Genesis Fading to Black, Like the Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Bible Talk, Ep. 19)9marks.org
Reconciliation and Redemption with Shannon Forester(Genesis 42-45)The story of Joseph and his brothers teaches us that reconciliation is both possible and necessary, even after deep betrayal. But this is only because God is at work in the messiness of human relationships. We are reminded that forgiveness, while costly, paves the way for peace and restoration. Joseph’s forgiveness of his brothers points us to the ultimate forgiveness we receive through Christ.Materials for further study:-Forgiving what you can’t forget by Lisa Terkeurst-Joseph: from Dreamer to Deliverer: R.C. Sproul-Every Woman is a Theologian: Know what you believe. At the beginning of chapter 40, we see Joseph in the pit again, this time in prison, even when he did not commit a crime. Joseph now serves the servants of the Pharaoh; he cannot be in a lower position. But even in this dark place, God’s hesed (a never-failing, eternally-persevering, always-keeps-His-promises kind of love) is with Joseph. By the end of chapter 41, Joseph is the second most powerful man in Egypt. God’s prepared him for this special time, from the pit of betrayal and forgottenness, to bring salvation to many people.Materials for further study:- Exalting Jesus in Genesis by Phillip Bethancourt -The Gospel According to Joseph by Tim KellerThe Gospel According to Josephgospelinlife.com
Meant for GoodDiscovering Christ through the story of JosephWEEK 2: The Providential Presence and Loyal Love of God with Sue Burton  (Genesis 39)After focusing on the sorrowful sinfulness of Judah and his family, Moses transitions back to Joseph who has been “taken down” (Genesis 39:1) to Egypt as a slave. We read back in Genesis 37:36 that Joseph was bought by Potiphar, a military officer for Pharoah and the captain of the guard. Joseph’s time in Potiphar’s house is marked by faithfulness and success, as opposed to Judah’s which is marked by selfishness and devastation. Materials for further study:-Great Lives: Joseph: A Man of Integrity and Forgiveness by Chuck Swindoll-Gleanings in Genesis by Arthur Pink-Genesis, An Expositional Commentary by James Montgomery Boyce
