Description

Our mission is to redefine the word "professionalism" by empowering communities to be their authentic selves. When we are told to be professional, in many ways we are told to not be ourselves. On this podcast, we have candid conversations and explore the conflict that we often face between being our authentic selves & "professionalism". The podcast is named ¿Quién Tú Eres? because that’s the question that we want each guest to answer. Listen to find out who we really are...when we stop code-switching.

Do your bowel movements change when you have anxiety? Pabel's been struggling with anxiety since launching the Kickstarter for Plurawl last week (click here to support). Don't ask Pabel "How are you?". Instead, ask Pabel..."When's the last time you went to the bathroom?"...because that will tell you all about how his anxiety is doing. When he's REALLY anxious...his bowel movements will shut down and it may even be a few days without #2. Yes. This may be TMI, but it's also the perfect illustration of how the mind impacts the body. Mental health impacts your physical health. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Support our show by becoming a premium member! https://feeds.megaphone.fm/SCOSR3144394743

This week's guest is Kevin Riley.  Kevin Riley is the New York City Council Member representing the 12th Council District, covering the neighborhoods of Wakefield, Baychester, Eastchester, Olinville, Edenwald, Williamsbridge, and Co-op City. Council Member Kevin Riley is the Chair of the Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises and the Co-Chair of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, which is the largest caucus in the New York City Council.  As Chair, he serves to prioritize creating equal opportunity and access for communities of color within New York City through the legislative, oversight, and budgetary powers of the Council. He has worked to ensure that our infrastructure empowers marginalized communities and addresses the housing crisis with initiatives for affordable housing and homeownership. For nearly the past year, the Council has approved 40 land use applications that will result in over 12,000 projected new housing units, of which over 63 percent are affordable. Under Council Member Kevin C. Riley’s leadership as Co-Chair of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, the caucus has passed the historic FDNY Diversity bill package. Signed into law, the bills aim to address true equity in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups within the department, as well as requiring the implementation of diversity, inclusion, anti-discrimination, and anti-harassment training. In this week’s episode, Kevin shares how connecting with Black male role models changed his life. Growing up, Kevin saw his father imprisoned and deported, and it skewed his idea of what his future would look like for the worse. It wasn’t until he was encouraged by Black men who were in political office did he see himself as someone who could make impactful change. Today, Kevin is a New York City Council Member representing the 12th Council District. He uses his position to prioritize creating equal opportunity and access for communities of color within New York City. After transcribing the episode into the Plurawl app, the emotional word that summarized the journal entry was...exhilarated. Exhilarated = A feeling of excitement, happiness, or elation. Often experienced during moments of high energy and reflecting an optimistic state. On the episode, Pabel is embracing changes in podcasting and content creation strategy. These updates are bringing him a sense of liberation...despite a few uncertainties about the public reception and social media algorithm influences. During the episode, Pabel reflects on the role that authenticity plays in the creative process, especially as a Tech Founder/ CEO. Although there is a desire to be vulnerable and push the boundaries of professionalism, it doesn't mean that there isn't any self-doubt or worry about being the representation...that he desperately wants to see in the world. Christina has a background in both Education and Marketing and uses both to uplift her community.  In this week’s episode, Christina shares her experience navigating the education space. While she isn’t trying to start a movement, she is always the first person to advocate for herself and her colleagues. She found that the dress code limited her to uncomfortable clothing and made it difficult to do everything a teacher has to handle. So she started incorporating sneakers and more casual clothing into her workwear. This caught the attention of her students who loved her new outfits and her male colleagues who were inspired to start a tie boycott. Serendipity = the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. This podcast alternates between sharing others' authenticity journeys on Tuesdays and Pabel's own on Fridays. Despite mixed reviews, he's surprised to find that many prefer his personal Friday episodes, which he never expected. Reflecting on the feedback, Pabel acknowledges his initial self-doubt about his unfiltered thoughts but finds it gratifying that others resonate with his authenticity. Feeling "serendipitous," Pabel reflects on recent experiences of embracing imperfection and learning through experimentation and how it's been leading to professional opportunities. Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Julia Mejia.  Born in the Dominican Republic, Julia arrived in the neighborhood of Dorchester when she was five years old. Raised by a single mother who was undocumented for most of her childhood, she was forced at an early age to speak up on behalf of her mother and others who felt ignored by the very institutions that were supposed to serve them.  As a proud graduate of the Boston Public Schools, she was the first in her family to graduate high school and college and the first to purchase her own home in Boston. Driven by a lifelong pursuit of justice and equity, she is proud to have created countless opportunities for others to step into their power and advocate for positive change. She created and led a civic engagement group focused on voter registration, is the founder of a nonprofit education network, and worked on national social justice campaigns as a producer for MTV. In this week’s episode, I meet up with Boston’s City Councilor Julia Mejia to discuss her journey towards politics. As a first-generation Dominican American child, she often found herself advocating for her community as she was translating for them. As an adult, she continued to advocate for her community as the first Latina reporter for MTV’s News and Docs category. Julia joined politics as an experiment - she wanted to see if she could run and win and uplift her community. And she won by one vote! Check out all this and more in Julia’s episode.  And if you’re ever in Boston and need of a good cup of coffee check out Ripple Cafe! I've been hesitant to talk about the specific features of the Plurawl app that we're launching in May. I fear that a big tech company will see the product and steal my idea...and this whole startup life is over. How likely is it that it happens though? No one truly knows, because it's impossible to predict the future. That said, we all swear that we can because we make up these stories in our heads every day. The funny part about it...is that they are rarely positive stories that we tell ourselves. Why don't I tell myself a story that involves me talking about what we're building...the post goes viral...and millions of people sign up for the App Launch Waitlist? The dilemma is that I fear talking about it because someone may steal my idea, but if I don't talk about it...then there wouldn't even be users for the product. Welp...I'll be "building in public" (as the tech folks say) and talking more openly about the Self-Discovery Coach that we're launching in May.
