StoryShots Book Summary and Review of How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence by Michael Pollan Introduction What do you think when someone mentions the word ‘psychedelics’? Do you imagine a world of fantasy and irony? Or do you get skeptical immediately?  Psychedelics have been cast under that kind of light. This bleak light comes from decades of hysteria, negative reviews and punitive legislation. However, that's not how the story has always been.  The author of the book, Michael Pollan, was born too late to partake in the acid trips that Woodstock is famous for. He was also young enough to get a taste. This was before the mass hysteria and legislation cast an image of psychedelics as the devil's agents.  Pollan’s journey begins with a paper he had ignored earlier. It led him to take a deeper look into the scientific study of the effects of psychedelics.  The meat of this book starts when the study of psychedelics and their uses was highly condemned. At the time, Pollan decided to gather first-hand experience of their usage. While he had put little thought into such substances and their effects, this was a chance to satisfy his curiosity.  “One good way to understand a complex system is to disturb it and then see what happens.” - Michael Pollan How to Change your Mind is an inspired look into the effects psychedelics have on the mind. The exploits back up the mystical experiences of those who took psilocybin in a controlled test. These experiences increased Pollan's interest in the subject.  About Michael Pollan Michael Pollan is a storied journalist whose work has covered periphery topics that many don't think about or find absurd.  Even then, his insights are eye-opening in most cases. His recent book, This Is Your Mind On Plants, is a remarkable collection of such insights. Although Pollan's roots are in journalism, his fame grew through his books. Pollan is also a Knight Professor at the UC Berkeley School of Journalism and writes articles on science and the environment. Pollan has earned both accolades and criticisms from scientists, therapists, and medical professionals. Most notably in 2015, he was a recipient of the Washburn Award.  StoryShot #1: Psychedelics Went Through a Renaissance A Cascade of Talent StoryShot #2: Psychedelics Had Potential to Revolutionize Natural History  StoryShot #3: Society Initially Resisted Psychedelics Strongly StoryShot #4: An Underground Tour Helped Pollan Understand Psychedelics First published on January 27, 2023. Disclaimer: The content presented here is for entertainment purposes only. It is not a replacement for professional medical advice. Introduction Do you want a long and healthy life? Making the right choices today can make a big difference in the years ahead.  The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. How Not to Die examines the top causes of death in America. When it comes to tackling these key causes of death, nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches. Peer-reviewed academic studies support each of Dr. Greger’s approaches. The overwhelming conclusion is that a whole food plant-based diet is the most effective ‘treatment’ to prevent and cure America's biggest killers. You may be used to hearing that you should avoid eating certain foods. The common link between the most harmful foods is that they are animal products. Here you can find out why they are so damaging to your health. What you may not realize is that many foods are actively beneficial and some can help prevent and even treat killer diseases. Learn what to eat and what to avoid to give yourself the best chance of a long life. Other lifestyle changes, like regular exercise and stopping smoking, can help you on your way.     “I opened my eyes to the depressing fact that there are other forces at work in medicine besides science. The U.S. healthcare system runs on a fee-for-service model in which doctors get paid for the pills and procedures they prescribe, rewarding quantity over quality. We don’t get reimbursed for time spent counseling our patients about the benefits of healthy eating. If doctors were instead paid for performance, there would be a financial incentive to treat the lifestyle causes of disease. Until the model of reimbursement changes, I don’t expect great changes in medical care or medical education.” – Dr. Michael Greger StoryShot #1: There Are 14 Top Killer Diseases StoryShot #2: Prevent Heart Disease StoryShot #3: Prevent Lung Diseases StoryShot #4: Prevent Brain Diseases (Stroke and Alzheimer’s) Stroke Alzheimer’s StoryShot #5: Prevent Digestive Cancers First published on February 25, 2023. It's a question as old as time. Many of us wish for a life without difficulties or barriers. Yet, reality tells a different story. Obstacles and opportunities are interwoven into the very fabric of our existence. We can't change that, but we can change how we respond to it. When we're trying to succeed and be happy, obstacles can feel like unwelcome blocks in our way. For some, this leads to avoidance or frustration. But what if we could view obstacles differently? What if each challenge was an opportunity in disguise, a stepping stone toward personal growth and achievement? This is the transformative perspective offered in Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle is The Way. The book is based on Stoic philosophy. It teaches us how to turn bad things into good. Instead of dreading challenges, Holiday encourages us to embrace them. He sees them as vital parts of our journey. By doing so, we can not only overcome these obstacles but also use them to propel ourselves to new heights. As Holiday says, “The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.” Let’s explore the ten key ideas from The Obstacle is The Way by Ryan Holiday. They can help us handle life’s challenges with grace and resilience. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Disclaimer: This is an unofficial summary and analysis. StoryShots Book Summary and Review of The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene Introduction “Machiavelli has a new rival. And Sun Tzu had better watch his back. Greene... has put together a checklist of ambitious behavior. Just reading the table of contents is enough to stir a little corner-office lust.” - New York Magazine World leaders, corporate executives, and other celebrities often influence global events. Have you ever wondered how these powerful people got to where they are?  The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene focuses on techniques for establishing power and influence in any situation.  The book presents historical instances of each law in operation. It also provides examples of people who do not follow these principles. A cynical person may think that a few laws are devious, and some of them really are. That said, they are all anchored in the complexities of human nature. In the end, understanding and using them to your advantage is more crucial than denying their existence. There are various instances in our life and career where these laws are relevant. Different circumstances require different courses of action. The book provides a guide to harness these laws to your advantage, regardless of the environment. Some laws focus on improving yourself progressively. Other laws focus on achieving victory over others in various pursuits of life.  Ultimately, The 48 Laws of Power teaches you to take control of your destiny. The central premise is that you can either be the person in power or a pawn in their agenda. If you seek to wield power rather than yield it, this book is a must-read.  In this summary, we have outlined the key ideas from The 48 Laws of Power. “Critical for anyone trying to accomplish anything.” - Ryan Holiday About Robert Greene Greene developed many insights into The 48 Laws of Power while working as a Hollywood writer. The psychological and behavioral similarities between today's elite and historical personalities inspired him. Greene came from a middle-class household in Los Angeles. His dad was a cleaning supply salesperson, and his mom was a homemaker with a failed creative desire. Greene labored in low-paying jobs in Europe before working in the media and Hollywood in the United States and publishing The 48 Laws of Power in his late 30s. Greene met book packager Joost Elffers at a communications and arts school in 1995. Elffers asked him to draft a treatment six months after Greene presented a book on power to him. Greene thought writing a book proposal was risky. His views changed when he revisited Julius Caesar's favorite biography. Caesar's determination to cross the Rubicon River and confront Pompey inspired him. This courageous decision started the Great Roman Civil War. Greene penned the treatment, which was titled The 48 Laws of Power. This was the turning moment of his life. If you don’t already have Jordan Ellenberg’s popular book on science and mathematical thinking, order it here or get the audiobook for free on Amazon to learn the juicy details. Introduction Wouldn’t you love to never be wrong? You’re not alone, and it’s hardly a surprise. In our work, relationships, and even our hobbies, we learn from a young age that being wrong is a mistake. Constant correct thinking is a concept that seems almost impossible, right? Wrong (ironically!).  How Not to Be Wrong by Jordan Ellenberg discusses ways we can make life simpler by thinking mathematically. The book dives into the world of mathematics and explores its applications in everyday life. By looking at simple and complex decisions, Ellenberg reveals our mistaken beliefs that lead to common errors in our thinking. “Mathematics is the study of things that come out a certain way because there is no other way they could possibly be.” — Jordan Ellenberg About Jordan Ellenberg  Jordan Ellenberg is a mathematician and author. He is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has written several books on math and its application in various fields. He received his Ph.D. in math from Harvard University in 1998 and has written for publications like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Wired. How Not to Be Wrong is a popular book that explores the ways mathematical thinking can help us understand and solve everyday problems. StoryShot #1: Think in a Nonlinear Way Nonlinear thinking means thinking logically about what you can and cannot control. Consider the following statement: "Where you should go depends on where you are." This nonlinear way of thinking helps you develop the skill of critical thinking and be better equipped to avoid mistakes. Imagine yourself in a car at a crossroads. When the light turns green, you drive across the road directly in front of you, not diagonally to the opposite side. This is linear thinking. Thinking in a nonlinear way gives us freedom to make choices and move forward with our lives. It also prompts more questions, which ‌leads to more answers. This allows us to acknowledge changes in our lives, even if we have no control over these changes. Linear regression is a statistical technique that looks for a linear relationship between two or more variables. For example, there is a statistic that shows that for every extra $10,000 someone earns, they are 3% more likely to vote Republican. Linear regression can help you understand how different factors influence an outcome and make predictions based on new data. However, to avoid reaching false conclusions, we must be aware that linear regression can't be used for every set of data and, if misused, produces misleading results. StoryShots Book Summary and Analysis of Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahnenman About Daniel Kahneman Daniel Kahneman is Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs Emeritus at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Princeton University, and a fellow of the Center for Rationality at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Dr. Kahneman is a member of the National Academy of Science, the Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Society of Experimental Psychologists, and the Econometric Society. In 2015, The Economist listed him as the seventh most influential economist in the world. In 2002, Kahneman was also awarded a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Introduction Thinking, Fast and Slow provides an outline of the two most common approaches our brains utilize. Like a computer, our brain is built of systems. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional. Daniel Kahneman encourages us to move away from our reliance on this system. System 1 is the most common source of mistakes and stagnation. In comparison, system 2 is a slower, more deliberate, and logical thought process. Kahneman recommends tapping into this system more frequently. As well as this advice, Kahneman provides guidance on how and why we make our decisions. StoryShot #1: Use Your Smile and Your Eyes for First Impressions 80% of first impressions is the way you look and move. In fact, studies suggest that emotional reactions occur in our brains before we even have time to register a reaction to somebody. So, try to utilize Leil Lowndes’ tips to intrigue everyone through your first impressions. Lowndes advises against quick smiles. If you interact with somebody, you should start by looking at their face for a second and pausing. This pause will let you soak in their persona. You should then let out a big warm smile that floods across your face. Allow this flood to overflow into smiling with your eyes. While engaging with the flooding smile, you should also try to maintain eye contact. Others will respect you more if you maintain strong eye contact. Specifically, this ability is associated with intelligence and abstract thinking. Lowndes’ second technique builds on the importance of maintaining eye contact. She describes how you should adopt sticky eyes. This means you should not break eye contact even after they have finished speaking. Once you have decided to break eye contact, you should do so slowly and reluctantly. Lowndes believes this approach will send a message to others to comprehend their conversation and respect them as an individual. When you are seeking romance, you should utilize what Lowndes describes as epoxy eyes. If you are romantically interested in someone, maintain deep eye contact with them even when they are not the person talking. If they are interested in you, keeping eye contact while they are a listener can be an effective aphrodisiac. StoryShots Book Summary and Review of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex by John Gray Introduction “A valuable, much-needed book. A contribution to the understanding of the communication styles of men and women.” — Harville Hendrix, author of Getting the Love You Want In relationships, men and women often behave differently, leading to the two parties having different expectations and goals. This can cause conflict and strain relationships. Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus is a #1 New York Times bestselling book on the common relationship problems between men and women. The book believes these difficulties result from psychological differences between the sexes. At the most basic level, we can distinguish between the sexes based on how they respond to stress.  The book helps men and women understand each other and reconcile their differences. John Gray creates a translation guide using the playful metaphor of men being from Mars and women being from Venus. Both Martians and Venusians can use this guide to better understand each other. Through this guide, they can develop intimacy and build stronger relationships. Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus has now sold more than 15 million copies and is the highest-ranked work of non-fiction from the 1990s. “Gray offers a Berlitz of the heart, a translation of that foreign language your spouse is speaking. Has The Pomodoro Technique by Francesco Cirillo been sitting on your reading list? Learn the key insights now.  We’re scratching the surface here. If you don’t already have the book, order it here or get the audiobook for free to learn the juicy details. About Francesco Cirillo Francesco Cirillo is a partner at Cirillo Consulting, a consulting firm out of Berlin. His firm provides tools, consulting, and training to improve the productivity of individuals and organizations in a simple, fast and sustainable way. Cirillo developed his system for improving productivity as a college student in the late 1980s. His creation of the Pomodoro Technique has helped millions of people and companies around the globe. Francesco's passion is to achieve better results without adding more time and effort.  Introduction Have you ever tried time management techniques, only to find they take more work than your work? Then, when you used them, you wasted time doing meaningless work instead of doing what is most important. The same thing happened to Cirillo while he was a student. He used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer and invented the Pomodoro Technique. Pomodoro is the Italian word for tomato. Here are the key takeaways from the Pomodoro Technique: StoryShot #1: Increase Productivity by Turning Time into Your Ally Originally, Cirillo came up with the Pomodoro Study Technique after noticing he was wasting time studying. He started using a kitchen timer to help him focus and avoid distractions. This gave him a short goal and a quick win that motivated him to be more productive.  He used the technique more during his studies and decided it could also help others. The discovery of Francesco Cirillo turned into the Pomodoro Technique, which has helped millions worldwide.  The popularity of this technique comes from its approach to time management. It takes a different approach from other time management techniques. For most people, the ticking clock causes anxiety, especially when there is a deadline. This leads to ineffective work, which leads to procrastination.  The Pomodoro Technique flips this anxiety about time. It turns time into your ally. It enables you to do what you want when you want, empowering you to increase your productivity. The technique's power lies in its simplicity and ability to focus our brains. It is also straightforward and simple to implement. It offers several keys to help in the digital age of continual distractions.  “The ticking becomes a calming sound. “It’s ticking, and I’m working and everything’s fine.” After a while, users don’t even hear the ring because their concentration is so high. In fact, not hearing the Pomodoro ring becomes a real problem in some cases.” — Francesco Cirillo StoryShot #2: The Pomodoro Technique is Both Simple and Effective StoryShot #3: Deal With Your Distractions The Right Way StoryShot #4: Reward Yourself with Regular Breaks First published on 5 Sept 2022. Has Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz been gathering dust on your bookshelf? Instead, learn the key insights now in minutes.  StoryShots Summary and Analysis of Psycho-Cybernetics: A New Way to Get More Living Out of Life by Maxwell Maltz Maxwell Maltz’s Perspective Maxwell Maltz was an American cosmetic surgeon and author. Maltz’s books, especially Psycho-Cybernetics, are claimed to have inspired the modern self-help book genre. Maltz graduated from Columbia University with a doctorate in medicine in 1923. After graduating, Maltz trained to be a plastic surgeon. His experiences within the surgery inspired his thoughts about self-image and success, which led to writing Psycho-Cybernetics and changing the lives of over 40 million people. StoryShot #1: Experience Is Important   Dr. Maltz was a plastic surgeon. Throughout his time working in this field, he realized that people would have plastic surgery. Still, their inner feelings and attitudes would remain the same. After these experiences, Maltz came across cybernetics. Cybernetics is the actions and requirements of machines that allow them to complete tasks effectively. Then, Maltz realized that people could apply the same processes to achieve success or failure.    Maltz outlines that people’s experiences are like machine programming. Your experiences will lead to specific outcomes. Importantly, we can change these experiences, like programming. Maltz encourages us to consider how we can use our experiences to achieve successful outcomes. However, he also encourages you to read this book with experience in mind. Hence, he suggests you actively read the book by taking notes. StoryShot #2: Change Your Success Mechanisms StoryShot #3: Imagination Matters First published on October 15, 2022. StoryShots Summary and Analysis of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Napoleon Hill's Perspective Napoleon Hill was an American self-help author. His books focused on specific principles for personal and financial success. He began his career as a journalist before becoming an advisor to President Franklin D Roosevelt. It was a meeting with Andrew Carnegie that inspired his self-help career. He used his knowledge from this interview to write books on business success and making money. Many of his self-help books remain as relevant now as they were before his death, in 1970.    Introduction Think and Grow Rich examines the psychological power of positive thought. Napoleon Hill delves into the importance of our thought patterns for our success. Successful people from the past combined positive thoughts with persistence and education. They surrounded themselves with supportive colleagues. We will all fail when seeking our life goals, but those willing to keep trying will become successful.   Published during the Great Depression, Think and Grow Rich was highly successful. To date, it has sold more than 15 million copies. This makes it one of the top ten best-selling self-help books of all time. In 2007, Businessweek ranked the book as the sixth best-selling business paperback.    StoryShot #1: Achievements Need Detailed Planning and Attainable Goals “Set your mind on a definite goal and observe how quickly the world stands aside to let you pass.” — Napoleon Hill. The way to become successful is to know what you want to achieve. Without clear goals, we cannot start our journey toward success. Define your personal goals as precisely as possible. If you hope to become rich, you should define how much money you wish to earn by a certain age. These goals will help you understand how much you will have to invest to reach your main goal.   After identifying a goal and giving it a timeframe, you will want to outline a plan. This plan should incorporate a step-by-step approach to attaining your final goal. Once you have this plan, you need to act. Start immediately.  These recommendations will help keep you motivated and focused on the next milestone. Eventually, you will achieve your final goal.
