This little-known story tells of crime buster hero Elliot Ness's time in Cleveland serving as that corrupt cities' Safety Director-his job being to clean up the crime and corruption which plagued that city in the mid 30's. That alone would have been a full time job were it not for the presence of Ohio's worst serial killer in history, who was terrorizing the city and its inhabitants by leaving decapitated and dismembered bodies all over town for a period of 4 years. Although Ness was sure at one point that he had him in his grasp- he couldn't pull together enough evidence to convict him- and the fact that the killer was never punished for his evil deeds left Ness, according to many, a broken man. In November of 1620 the Pilgrims arrived by ship to a new land filled with danger and uncertainty, a world in which nearly half of them would soon die of starvation and sickness, their final resting place being unmarked graves so as not to let the surrounding Indians know how many of their group had been lost. Yet with unshakable faith and strength of spirit, the survivors of that first winter set to work to fell trees and build a village, they found the strength to clear fields and plant crops when the springtime came, and they forged an alliance with the Wampanoag Indians for their mutual benefits. Then, despite that first year of incredible hardship and loss, they set aside a few days in the fall of 1621 to give thanks to their God for all the blessings they had received. They finally caught Harvey Logan, tried him, and sentenced him to 20 years- they only problem was- he got out of the Knoxville jail where he had become a celebrity. And it looks like bribery was responsible. When another express car was robbed the posse corned the fugitives and the one who they called Tap Duncan killed himself in the shootout. Tap Duncan was identified as Harvey Logan- but not all the men who exhumed his body agreed. In 1942, 12 year old Calvin Graham, already having left his crowded home and abusive stepfather, walked into a US Naval Recruiting Office with a few faked documents, bypassed the dental check which would have revealed his 12 year old teeth, and was signed into the US Navy. After completing basic training he was assigned to the brand new Battleship South Dakota, and soon found himself serving as a gunner in the middle of some of the Pacific War's most intense carrier battles. He was wounded by shrapnel in the jaw when his gun turret was struck by a 500 lb. bomb- but survived- and when the ship returned for repairs he had only a few days to enjoy the praise before his mo0ther saw him in a newsreel and reported him. This is your behind the camera pass to the making of the movie that made Steven Spielberg famous- as well as Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw (Shaw was already a stage and screen star in England). Filmed in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, in 1974, Jaws was incredibly difficult to make, its progress being constantly hampered by weather, salt water, ocean tides and wave moment, which limited camera work to hand-held only, mechanical shark malfunctions, which were daily- and a host of other problems. But director Spielberg's (and Universals) choice of key actors, helpful script writers, award winning editors, talented special effects crew, music score, Spielberg's often uncanny ability to create suspenseful scenes and get the most out of his actors, and his realization that suspense needed to be the focus of concentration, and not the mechanical shark- made the movie a huge success.
