Unsung Heroes of the American Revolution (Pt 1): The Culper Spy Ring, Nathan Hale, and others: Few people leaving the Banana Republic Store at 66th and 3rd st Manhattan, NY, stop to notice the plaque on the outside wall that mentions the spot less than 100 yards away where courageous young Nathan Hale spoke his famous last words “I regret that have but one life to give for my country’- before being hung from a tree by his British captors. And many probably have no idea how and why those words stirred General Washington’s heart so profoundly when he heard them. And Lady Gaga probably had no idea that her Rivington Street Rebels derived their name from Washington’s greatest spy- James Rivington- or the Beastie Boys, for that matter, when they chose a picture of Manhattan’s Rivington Street for the cover of their album ,Paul’s Boutique. Or the people leaving the Burger King at the intersection of Gregory Ave. and River Dr. in Passaic NJ who drop trash near the forlorn historical marker located on a small concrete pad right there near a utility pole in the parking lot…the sign that just begins to note the incredible accomplishments of a one-time British Lord, William Alexander –better known , and loved, by his Continental Troops as Lord Sterling. Although it says much more, these few words say it all: “American Patriot, Friend of George Washington”. The American Revolution stretched for eight years, from 1775 to 1783, during which time Commander in Chief George Washington had to depend on his network of spies and most trusted soldiers to stay one step ahead of the noose. The AMC series TURN, based on Alexander Rose's book "Washington's Spies", gives a highly fictionalized account of the actions of Washington's greatest spy ring- The Culper Ring. This is the real story of the courageous men and women who risked and sometimes suffered hanging, beginning with Nathan Hale. While Part I focusses mainly on the Culper Spy Ring,, Part Two will provide many rarely told stories about the unsung heroes who risked everything for the cause of liberty, including the slave spy James Armistead Lafayette, Margaret Corbin, Molly Pitcher, Francis Marion , aka The Swamp Fox, and many others. In this very enjoyable intervoiew with author Jeremy Dauber we discuss his new blockbuster book American Scary , which is a sweeping and entertaining narrative that details the rise and enduring grip of horror on American culture from the taught, terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe to the sharply chilling folms of Jordan Peele. Along the way we talk about Washington Irving, Arthur Machem. Alfred Hitchcock, the movie 'The Blob', Uncle Tom's Cabin, Frankenstein, and much more, but we probably only cover 1% of the contents of this terrific book, which is really a history of horror genre books and movies. It was the third "Vacation" comedy featuring the Griswald family- Clark. Ellen,Rusty and Audrey- and all Clark wanted to have a simple old-fashioned Christmas with family. His plan: to heavily decorate the house and roof with lights, Santa and reindeer, and to enjoy a simple Christmas dinner before celebrating the real meaning of Christmas. Instead he got uninvited family with their huge slobbering Rottweiler, an uninvited wild squirrel, electrical problems, big sewage problems, fire, and a SWAT team. Halleluyah! This is the story of the bloody battle for Okinawa in 1945- the last stop before the invasion of the island of Japan, which continued to refuse to surrender even though Emperor Hirohito and the top military elite knew they had no chance of winning. The Japanese dug in with 140,000 army regulars and Okinawan conscripts and prepared for an all out suicide war using civilians as human shields. Over 1000 Kamikaze planes were turned loose on the fleet supporting the Okinawa invasion, and for 81 straight days the American forces on land and sea fought a hellish battle against an unyielding enemy. The Battle of Hacksaw Ridge and the role of conscientiousobjector Desmond Doss is an integral part of this story. Get all of our shows at one website: www.bestof1001stories.com CALLING ALL FANS.. The first villager, Sarah Bishop, is chosen to be hung, 19 others follow. Anne Putnam Jr. and others put on courtroom shows, accusing innocent people of witchcraft, and the judges and jury all fall for it. In March of 1692 the little village of Salem Massachusetts became a hotbed of lies, deception, and fear as a group of teenage girls went into convulsions and named selected locals as witches who were possessing them. The judge, the reverends, and most of the townspeople were caught up in the frenzy and fear and those who spoke up faced sure retribution. When the witch hunt started it gained momentum- and was at its worst when a four year old girl whose mother had already been accused was interrogated for two weeks until she finally broke down and admitted she was a witch so she could go to the gallows with her mother. In 1919, 8 Chicago White Sox players either participated directly in or failed to report a plan to sabotage the best of 8 World Series games against the Cincinnati Reds for profit.. The Reds won 5 games to 4 and the matter seemed to drop- until the following season, when a grand jury was convened to get to the truth. One of the gamblers involved testified, and some of the players admitted they had been in on the plot. One of the best players on the team, Shoeless Joe Jackson, ,who had played perfectly throughout the series, was named in the scandal and paid for it by being from pro baseball for the rest of his life. Many people today felt he has been unfairly wronged. This is his story. Support our show and checkout www.simplisafe.com/1001! Only 14.99/mo- no long contracts-no tools required. For days Forsyth's men laid in their shallow holes trying not to get shot, but the doctor was hit badly, Beecher was dying, and qa half dozen others were either dead of wounded, including Forsyth, who was still commanding his men. They had sent scouts but it was 100 miles to the nearest post and the chances the scouts would make it through the Indians was minimal. The rations were gone, and the only option after 4 days was rotting horse meat. Death was staring them in the face. This is their story.
One of the most moving stories we have ever done jhere at 1001 Heroes- This one deserves a movie!

Born in the South to a poor black family, young Eugene Bullard ran away from his family when his only parent, his father, was being pursue for a supposed crime. He made it to France and became a fighter pilot for the French air force in WWI.His incredible story follows.
August, 1868 General Phil Sheridan offers a special commission to his top officer Col. Forsyth to hire 50 good, tough men to bring the fight to the Indians that have been marauding throughout the central and northern West. Armed with Spencer repreating carbines and fast horses, they take the fight to Cheyenne Chief Roman Nose, who has gathered 600 warriors under his command. They meet at Beecher's Island on the Arikara River on Sept. 17th, 1868, in one of the biggest battles of the Indian wars.
This episode tells the story-behind-the story regarding the making of the movie that many critics claim is the greatest movie ever made, including the fact that the movie was filmed while WWII was raging and that many of the people involved in the making of the movie had escaped from Nazi-dominated Europe and had yet to loose family members in German concentration camps. The cast, the creators, and the story outlining the importance of Casablanca as vital link for escaping refugees, are brought to light here, along with movie gaffs listed at the end. For appropriate ages studying World War II, this episode combined with a viewing of the movie, would make an excellent prelude to studies of 1941-1943. This episode briefly and simply explains France's occupation by Germany and its political division between the Vichy Government (pro-Nazi) and the French Resistance government under DeGaulle, drawing similarities between this division and that of America during their revolution. Listen to this episode just before watching the movie and you'll enjoy Casablanca 100% more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

WOW! This quality history podcast is a hidden treasure. Give it a listen & hear for yourself.
So wrong about Hitler & Germany. The man was ahead of his time. The Jews have enslaved the World with debt via the Zionist movement. In Hitler's Germany, there was no debt, no smoking, highest wages in the World, almost everyone owned a home and a car, people's house payments were 1/8 of their monthly income, people had savings for retirements, the elderly were respected and cared for, as well as veterans. Germans weren't forced to love Hitler, they loved him because he showed them the freedom, the love they deserved, and he fulfilled all his promises to his Country. Hitler banned smoking!! A true Patriot. He saw what the Jews were doing to his nation. drugs, homosexuality, laziness, Communism pushing and trying to force their DEBT banking system upon the people of Germany. The first 2 nations to join Hitler & Germany were from the Middle East and Africa!! Look it up! Hitler loved all people and treated them all the same. He wanted what was best for his people and all of Europe. And th
A truly entertaining, enlightening and enjoyable channel! A host tht truly enjoys telling the tales he weaves as he informs us of little known facts and inspiring and heroic stories of tales from our past. I can and do listen to the episodes as the hours fly by. Thank you Jon, for your great narration and the love of storytelling. We all anxiously await your next episode to come!!
This is a great podcast. I find myself continuously listening to each episode as I work at my job through the nights. Every one is greatly informative and entertaining to hear. The wonderful host, Jon Hagedorn fills each tale with enthusiasm and an obvious interest and love for each story he crafts for us. I just finished the inspiring 3 part story about the life story of Eugene Bullard. What a fantastic life he lived!! 5 star channel!! Absolutely!! Jump aboard and tell your friends about this channel! They'll thank you!!
I'm not sure if you're ever seen it but there is a GREAT french film that kind of tells this story. It is called "The Brotherhood Of The Wolf" and came out the same year as Gladiator and Crouching Tiger. In my opinion, it was the best film of the year and should have won the oscar for it. I recommend watching the Director's Cut of the film. Atmospheric and Scary, It is simply fantastic and one of my favorite films. Highly recommended!!!
A truly fantastic series. Full of engrossing tales and wonderful, informative and detailed information about a wide variety of subjects. With great storytelling and narration, iIt will keep you coming back for more. Hours upon hours of listening pleasure awaits!!
Generally I really love this podcast but this episode was really heavy on the eurocentrism. Having worked as an archeologist in Arizona as well as having deep roots in the state form this opinion. Arizona has archeological evidence of complex civilizations with large scale architecture and vast trade networks beginning in at least 900ad. These communities are found across the entire state. In general Arizona is a poor state. There is not money for large scale excavations that are not mandated by HIPA (laws governing cultural resources on public lands) due to construction, generally roadwork. Furthermore, many sites are protected as native sacred sites and therefore it would inappropriate, disrespectful and illegal to excavate those sites. These laws exist to protect Native cultural resources from further pillage by mostly the descendants of their colonizers. Fun fact: Arizona is home to 5 of the 10 largest reservations in the US.
Great show!
You’ve done a really solid job here- a lot of work. Well done.
Review: 5 Stars: A superb family of podcasts, made with real passion for storytelling. The 1001 podcasts have recently become firm favourites of mine. The material used has a wide range and is of consistently high quality. There really is something to interest everyone. The storytelling and narration are excellent, leaning away from over-production and from over-editorialising and instead keeping things pared down and simple, reading the story off the page with a relaxed, engaging tone. The words are allowed room to breath and as a result the authors and the stories can speak for themselves. This enriches the listening experience and it's an approach I have grown to enjoy enormously. I would heartily recommend these podcasts to anyone who likes a good story told well. Anyone looking for a good place to start: 1001 Classic Short Stories and Tales episode... The Wendigo. It's a great story and to my mind Mr Hagadorn captures the suspense and the atmosphere of the wilderness perfectly. PS
This is the ULTIMATE PODCAST for those of us who enjoy history, legends, and factual stories that have been lost through the years. Episode 61 is the best one in my opinion. You make it unambiguously easy for everyone as well as keeping me interested like a book you can’t put down!!! Great commentating as well!!!
