In 1945 the Chicago Cubs baseball team was trying to end a many years long losing streak and it was game 4 of the playoffs taking place right there in Chicago. Just before that game, which would have clinched it for them, a local bar owner bought a ticket for himself and his pet goat only to discover that the goat, which he had brought for good luck, wasn't allowed. He demanded to talk to the owner, PJ Wrigley, who told him he could come in but the goat could not. Why, asked the owner. because your goat stinks! was the answer. According to legend, the bar owner put a curse on the team , saying they would never win another series as long as he lived. And the curse lasted until 2016, despite all kinds of efforts to break it. This is the story. Voice of Cubs legendary announcer Harry Caray at end. Get all of our shows at one website: WWW.BESTOF1001STORIES.COM REVIEWS NEEDED . A four year-old boy in Oklahoma begins telling his mom all about his other life- that he had had four wives, three brothers and two sisters, and had lived in a big home with a pool, and literally hundreds of other details. He did not know his prior name- but he knew that he was in a movie and had danced on Broadway- so he and his mom began visiting the library looking for old hollywood books with pictures. They finally found his picture- but he was an extra in a 30's movie and in the book the extras were not identified. By this time hiis mom wrote to the University of Virginia to see if they could get some help from the past lives researchers there- and from that point on the story grows. Its an incredible story of reincarnation which has been proved beyond any doubt. For access to ten years of 1001 stories visit us at www.bestof1001stories.com.
New York's Catskill Mountains have long been the place where legends abound. When gangster Dutch Schultz needed a safe place to bury a steel safe with gold, diamonds, and bonds valuing over $150 million, he and his driver Lulu Rosencrantz headed for the little town of Phoenicia, and finding a good spot next to Esopus Creek- that's where he left it. Soon after, he and Lulu were killed in a hit ordered by Lucky Luciano. But a police stenographer was with Dutch as he was dying, and his last words sounded pretty convincing. By the way, if I sound a little out of breath I have good reason. The voice is coming back soon. CALLING ALL FANS.. REVIEWS NEEDED FOR NEW SHOWS! REVIEWS NEEDED FOR NEW SHOWS! On Jan 2, 1932, in a rural area in southwest Missouri, 6 lawmen were shot and killed and two wounded in a shootout as a groupof 11 sheriffs and deputies surrounded a farmhouse in which two or three well-armed fugitives were holedup. They were brothers named Harry and Jennings, and possibly Paul, and they were wanted- Harry for murder of a lawman, the others for operating a multi-state auto theft ring. Just about every rule in modern policing was broken- but this was 1932, it was a rural area, and police forces were basically just peacekeepers in farm towns in those days. They had lots of courage but little training. Inside the house were two brothers who had won area shooting contests for years, they had been in prison, and did not want to go back, Check out all 12 1001 podcasts at www.bestof1001stories.comand catch our latest podcasts 1001 True Crime From Another Time and 1001 Stories From The Gilded Age.

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind: The Incredible Story That Inspired the Spielberg Movie", tells of Project Serpo, a top-secret U.S. government program that arranged an exchange program with aliens that sent 12 astronauts to a planet 40 light years away with hopes of gaining insight to another civilization and their technologies. Inspired largely by a well-known physicist named Dr. Hynek, who had been the head of the classified "UFO Project Blue Book", and was hired by Speilberg and Columbia Pictures to advise the production of the 1977 film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", certain story lines and scenes, such as the one showing 12 astronauts boarding an alien craft near the end of the picture, are said to have been very close to reality. By Christmas of 1914 the war in Europe had been raging for 5 months. A 500 mile long line of trenches stretched from the North Sea, France and Belgium to the Swiss border- the trenches sometimes as close as 100 feet apart. Here we share a number of documented stories of moments of truce beginning on Christmas Eve- when men from opposing armies met in the no man's land between the trenches to exchange tobacco, buttons, and even handshakes before returning to their posts. In some places along the front, men played football (soccer) using whatever was available. "the Mysterious Death of Edgar Allen Poe"-On September 7, 1849, Edgar Allen Poe, at the top of his career, kissed his fiance goodbye at his home in Richmond, VA, and began a business trip to Philadelphia. He then dropped out of sight for a week, he was found in Baltimore on October 3rd, inside a bar-turned-polling place, drunk and disheveled, wearing clothes that did not fit him, and unable to speak clearly. He was rushed to a hospital, where he lingered on the edge of insanity for nearly one week, before dying. Theories as to the cause of his death have abounded for decades. His doctor had ordered him not to drink, fearing that a lesion close to his brain could lead to his death. Others suggested he was forced to drink alcohol at the polling place and was a victim of "cooping", by which innocent bystanders were grabbed off the street and forced to drink, then vote multiple times. Still others suspect a variety of causes, from murder to rabies. Even more mysterious is the fact that until recently, and for 80 years, a cloaked man was seen visiting the original grave of Poe every year on the same date, where he would leave three roses and a half drunk bottle of cognac behind. Will he come back next year? In December of 1914,71 year-old decorated CivilWar Major, accomplished journalist, and famous author Ambrose Bierce wrote his Niece and his secretary to tell them he was going to Mexico to cover the Mexican insurrection led by Pancho Villa and others. He felt likely thathis fate would be probably be that of being lined up against a wall and shot- as these insurrectionists were quick-tempered killers. Not long after, Bierce disappeared completely, and years of searches have not brought any concrete evidence of what happened to him- but the legend told by those who daid they saw him or knew of him in his last days tells the story very much like the one he envisioned. This is his story.

On a sping day in 1986 two people walked into the Cokeville Elementary School in Cokeville Wyoming and held 154 children and adults hostage in a 50' X 50' room for 2 1/2 hours, claiming that this was a revolution, and that they wanted a ransom payment of $2 million dollars for every child in the room. They entered the building with a gas bomb capable of blowing the side of building out easily if it were detonated. The wife of this crazed husband wife team accidentally triggered the bomb in the crowded room. Shrapnel from the blast peppered the walls but miraculously, only one of the four explosive devices ignited despite the gas flames that shot the woman across the room, and most of the blast went straight up through the ceiling. Other than the man and wife, who died, not another person was killed, although one was shot and many were burned. Some said it was an incredible piece of luck. But as the children's stories began to come out in the days and weeks that followed- their lives were saved by much more than luck. On July 4th, 2026, in fact, all that year, America's Liberty Bell and all its brothers and sisters in every state will be ringing out loud and clear to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There are many stories surrounding the original Liberty Bell, its crack, and its many renditions both here and abroad, as well as how it is perceived with love and respect by most Americans. It was first given the name 'The Liberty Bell" by the abolishionist movement as they fought for their freedom, and the women's Liberty Bell, which they called the Justuce Bell, was there when they cheered the passage of the 19th amendment giving them the vote. It was there behind the head of Abraham Lincoln as he lay in an open casket on his final trip home. The story of the Liberty Bell is OUR story, and a big part of what makes America special. The Amber Room was an ornate chamber decorated in custom crafted amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors and located in the Catherine Palace in Tsarke Selo near St. Petersburg. It was a gift from Prussia to Russia in the 18th century in order to promote an alliance against Sweden. It was stolen from the palace by Nazi Germany in WWII and moved to Konigsberg Castle in Germany, where some say it was destroyed by either Soviet or RAF bombing raids which destroyed most of that city. Konigberg was annexed by Russia and is called Kaliningrad. today. Many theories exist regarding the fate of the Amber Room and we cover them here, as well as provide additional research on Swedish and Argentine financing of the Nazi war machine, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gusloff with nearly 9,000 refugees onboard (and possibly the Amber Room in crates), and German theft of many priceless pieces of art, some of which were recovered by the "Monuments Men", and others which are still missing. For a few months back in the summer of 1972, a shaggy beast terrorized the tiny town of Louisiana Missouri, scaring the living bejezuz out of kids and adults and mystifying researchers. He had been spotted at a year previous but forgotten- passed off as a prank, but when he came back, he did so with a vengeance- killing at least one dog, and running one family out of their home. He left genuine three toed footprints, smelled like long dead meat, and had thick black hair covering his face and body. He was witnessed by dozens, He was also accompaniied by very strange lights and objects in the sky, Sometime after 1972, the beast called MoMo (for Missouri Monster) ,like Puff the Magic Dragon, slipped sadly back into his cave. But his legend survives as the monster that time forgot. Moran, Mark & Scheurman, Mark. Weird US Barnes & Noble Books. Place, Marian (1978). Bigfoot All Over the Country. Dodd, Mead. pp. 130–32. WOW! This quality history podcast is a hidden treasure. Give it a listen & hear for yourself.
So wrong about Hitler & Germany. The man was ahead of his time. The Jews have enslaved the World with debt via the Zionist movement. In Hitler's Germany, there was no debt, no smoking, highest wages in the World, almost everyone owned a home and a car, people's house payments were 1/8 of their monthly income, people had savings for retirements, the elderly were respected and cared for, as well as veterans. Germans weren't forced to love Hitler, they loved him because he showed them the freedom, the love they deserved, and he fulfilled all his promises to his Country. Hitler banned smoking!! A true Patriot. He saw what the Jews were doing to his nation. drugs, homosexuality, laziness, Communism pushing and trying to force their DEBT banking system upon the people of Germany. The first 2 nations to join Hitler & Germany were from the Middle East and Africa!! Look it up! Hitler loved all people and treated them all the same. He wanted what was best for his people and all of Europe. And th
A truly entertaining, enlightening and enjoyable channel! A host tht truly enjoys telling the tales he weaves as he informs us of little known facts and inspiring and heroic stories of tales from our past. I can and do listen to the episodes as the hours fly by. Thank you Jon, for your great narration and the love of storytelling. We all anxiously await your next episode to come!!
This is a great podcast. I find myself continuously listening to each episode as I work at my job through the nights. Every one is greatly informative and entertaining to hear. The wonderful host, Jon Hagedorn fills each tale with enthusiasm and an obvious interest and love for each story he crafts for us. I just finished the inspiring 3 part story about the life story of Eugene Bullard. What a fantastic life he lived!! 5 star channel!! Absolutely!! Jump aboard and tell your friends about this channel! They'll thank you!!
I'm not sure if you're ever seen it but there is a GREAT french film that kind of tells this story. It is called "The Brotherhood Of The Wolf" and came out the same year as Gladiator and Crouching Tiger. In my opinion, it was the best film of the year and should have won the oscar for it. I recommend watching the Director's Cut of the film. Atmospheric and Scary, It is simply fantastic and one of my favorite films. Highly recommended!!!
A truly fantastic series. Full of engrossing tales and wonderful, informative and detailed information about a wide variety of subjects. With great storytelling and narration, iIt will keep you coming back for more. Hours upon hours of listening pleasure awaits!!
Generally I really love this podcast but this episode was really heavy on the eurocentrism. Having worked as an archeologist in Arizona as well as having deep roots in the state form this opinion. Arizona has archeological evidence of complex civilizations with large scale architecture and vast trade networks beginning in at least 900ad. These communities are found across the entire state. In general Arizona is a poor state. There is not money for large scale excavations that are not mandated by HIPA (laws governing cultural resources on public lands) due to construction, generally roadwork. Furthermore, many sites are protected as native sacred sites and therefore it would inappropriate, disrespectful and illegal to excavate those sites. These laws exist to protect Native cultural resources from further pillage by mostly the descendants of their colonizers. Fun fact: Arizona is home to 5 of the 10 largest reservations in the US.
Great show!
You’ve done a really solid job here- a lot of work. Well done.
Review: 5 Stars: A superb family of podcasts, made with real passion for storytelling. The 1001 podcasts have recently become firm favourites of mine. The material used has a wide range and is of consistently high quality. There really is something to interest everyone. The storytelling and narration are excellent, leaning away from over-production and from over-editorialising and instead keeping things pared down and simple, reading the story off the page with a relaxed, engaging tone. The words are allowed room to breath and as a result the authors and the stories can speak for themselves. This enriches the listening experience and it's an approach I have grown to enjoy enormously. I would heartily recommend these podcasts to anyone who likes a good story told well. Anyone looking for a good place to start: 1001 Classic Short Stories and Tales episode... The Wendigo. It's a great story and to my mind Mr Hagadorn captures the suspense and the atmosphere of the wilderness perfectly. PS
This is the ULTIMATE PODCAST for those of us who enjoy history, legends, and factual stories that have been lost through the years. Episode 61 is the best one in my opinion. You make it unambiguously easy for everyone as well as keeping me interested like a book you can’t put down!!! Great commentating as well!!!
