Today I am talking with T.J. Ferrante. T.J. is senior counsel and a board certified health care lawyer with Foley and Lardner. I asked T.J. to come on the show because he is an expert in the legal and compliance issues associated with telemedicine.  The use of telemedicine has exploded over the last few years and I think these issues will be relevant to so many of us in compliance.    T.J. can be reached at: tferrante@foley.com    Podcast website: www.compliancemastermind.com  Rebekah can be reached at: compliancemastermind@gmail.com Remember to subscribe to the show! Today I am talking with Jay Anstine of Bluebird Healthlaw Partners. Jay is a lawyer and compliance officer and we are going to discuss strategies you can use to engage with leadership and be seen as a partner as opposed to an obstacle (or as my colleague described it a few years ago, a myopic obstructionist). Jay has some very practical suggestions for building rapport and building relationships to help remove some of the perception that compliance is a barrier to operations. I will include all of Jay’s contact information in the show notes which you can access through your podcast app or by going to the podcast website, compliancemastermind.com. Jay has a great weekly newsletter that you can sign up for on his website so definitely check that out. Today I am talking with CJ Wolf.  CJ is a physician who now works in compliance full time as a senior compliance executive at Healthicity. Given his background and experience I knew he would be the perfect person to talk about strategies to engage physicians in the work of compliance. Today on the show I am talking with Sharon Peters. Sharon is a partner in the Portland office of Lewis Brisbois and is a member of the firm’s Healthcare and Labor and Employment practices. Sharon and I are talking about the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB).  The NPDB is a web-based repository of reports containing information on medical malpractice payments and certain adverse actions related to health care practitioners, providers, and suppliers. Established by Congress in 1986, it is a workforce tool that prevents practitioners from moving state to state without disclosure or discovery of potentially damaging performance issues. With the increasing focus on quality care and patient safety I think this is a very timely topic and Sharon provides some great insights. Today on the show I am talking with Fran Carroll. Fran is the Corporate Compliance and Privacy Officer for the Joint Commission and we are going to talk about something that was confusing to me as a young compliance officer and is still an area of opportunity for most health care providers, and that is the relationship between compliance and accreditation. Fran provides an interesting perspective about the synergies and potential ways to leverage the expertise of both disciplines and I think our conversation will help identify some possible improvements that may be helpful in your own organization. Today on the show I am talking with Marti Arvin. Marti is the Vice President of audit strategy for CynergisTek and has more than three decades of operational and executive leadership experience in the fields of compliance, research, and regulatory oversight in both academic medical and traditional hospital care settings.   Marti and I are talking about vendor management. This is one of those areas that I think can be very overwhelming and it's hard to know where to start. In our conversation Marti provides some very practical suggestions and tactics to help you evaluate your organization’s vendor relationships and ensure that you have the appropriate controls in place. Today we are talking all about value based care and alternative payment models. The transition from payment for the volume of care provided to payment for the value that care brings, is here to stay and as compliance officers we need to get our arms around these new payment models in order to determine how they impact our organizations and our compliance programs. So today I’m going to talk about where to begin. First we'll discuss how to evaluate the compliance program requirements associated with value based care and alternative payment models, and what steps you need to take to ensure your program addresses the risks and program requirements associated with the programs. And second, I am going to identify ways to help take your compliance program beyond the core components and identify strategies and opportunities for operational integration. Today on the show I am talking with Janet Kennedy about social media. Janet is a social media expert, has over 20 years experience in marketing and is the host of the “Get Social Health” podcast. She is also the founder of the Get Social Health Academy, a coaching and eLearning consultancy producing online courses for Healthcare Associations, Medical Societies, and private practices. I loved my conversation with Janet because we talked about some of the compliance aspects of social media, but also how social media is being used in healthcare. We talk about who is using social media well, what lessons can be learned from social media gone bad, and what we should be communicating with employees about using social media. Today I am talking with Chris Haney about Big Data and data analysis. This is another topic on my 2018 bucket list of areas that have intimidated me in the past. The good news is that Chris is an expert and explains these concepts in a way that non-statisticians can understand.  This episode provides a great overview of data in healthcare and how we can utilize data analysis in our compliance programs. Chris talks about prioritizing our data analysis, proactive versus reactive approaches, and the role of statistical sampling.  Chris Haney is the Managing Director of the Forensus Group specializing in financial investigations, forensic accounting and statistical sampling analysis. Previously, Chris led investigations at a global consulting firm, and was a Forensic Accountant at the Federal Bureau of Investigation specializing in complex white collar and healthcare violations. You can learn more about Chris and find his blog on statistical sampling and analysis on his website: http://forensus.com You can find all of the resources we discuss on the show today on the podcast website: www.compliancemastermind.com  Rebekah can be reached at: compliancemastermind@gmail.com Remember to subscribe to the show! Today I am talking with Jenny O’Brien. Jenny is the Chief Compliance Officer for UnitedHealthcare, including UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. On the show Jenny and I talk about career strategy, and in particular we talk about how she has leveraged mentors in various ways throughout her career. I also ask her about leadership, what that looks like at different stages in a career, and she provides some great leadership strategies that have worked for her. Happy New Year everyone and thanks for joining me for the first episode in 2018. One of my goals for 2018 is to tackle subjects that have intimidated me in the past, see if I can get some clarity, and begin to feel more confident about my knowledge of those topics. Today is one of those episodes, so if you’ve ever been somewhat intimidated by cybersecurity, I think you are really going to enjoy my conversation with Donna Grindle.  Donna is the founder of Kardon Compliance and also the co-host on the Help Me With HIPAA Podcast.  If you haven’t personally been impacted by a cybersecurity breach, I am sure that you know people who have. It seems like every week we hear about another data breach and it’s not just big health systems, physician practices, imaging centers, health insurance companies, and even Medicaid programs. No organization is immune. Cybersecurity is a huge risk for organizations and it makes sense to not only tackle the issue from a technology perspective, but also on a personal level because it only takes one employee to respond to a phishing email to expose an entire organization. Donna knows her stuff and shares some great information and strategies for compliance officers. I am really excited about today’s show. One of the reasons I started this podcast is because I think compliance officers learn so much from listening to other compliance officers share their experiences. Today we are going inside the structure of the ACO compliance programs for two large health systems. We will talk with their compliance officers and each of will respond to the same questions so you’ll get a really good understanding of their organizations, how they have set up their compliance programs and how they interact with governance and operational leadership. We’ll also talk about challenges they’ve encountered, one area of compliance that they are focusing on in 2017, and then their recommendations for anyone either starting or managing an ACO compliance program.  First we’ll hear from Becky Lovelace, she is the Compliance Director for Ascension Care Management Health Partners. Then we will hear from Robert Jagielski, the Compliance Director of Clinical Integration for MedProVideX, a subsidiary of Dignity Health.  This show will be perfect for you if you are just getting involved in ACO compliance and are building a program or you are currently managing an ACO compliance program and are looking for confirmation or new ideas for your program. Today I thought it would be fun to take a break from talking about legal and regulatory obligations and talk about how we can make compliance engaging and maybe even a little fun. Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week is coming up the week of November 5th – 11th. I know a lot of organizations use this week to highlight their compliance program. I also know a lot of other organizations maybe don’t celebrate any particular week, but may do something outside of the box every once in a while to help raise the profile of the compliance function.  Every organization is different and has its own tolerance for fun and innovation, and the activities I talk about today can all be modified to fit the culture of your company. Today we are talking about the Medicare Shared Savings Program. On the show I provide a short overview of the MSSP, we discuss the mandatory compliance plan elements, other regulatory requirements that are important for ACO compliance officers to be aware of and monitor, I talk about the waivers available in the MSSP, and I share my Top 10 Compliance Risks for MSSP ACOs.  This is an episode that I think will be helpful for anyone working with the MSSP, not just compliance officers. Whether you are responsible for quality, care coordination, analytics, governance, or you are the ACO Medical Director or Executive Director, understanding the compliance framework for ACOs, and the risks associated with participating in the MSSP, will help you be a better leader. And if you aren’t familiar with the MSSP compliance requirements, and are looking to find out more, this episode is also for you. Remember to subscribe to the show!
