Song Of The Week: Caught Up by ixaras. As per funds mgmt, “Ixaras is a queer Indie Pop Rock artist & songwriter raised in Meanjin/Brisbane who champions her self expression through the art of music and live gigs. Alongside her melodic ear worms and thought provoking lyricism about the complexities of growing up and young love, Ixara epitomises the meaning of youth, inclusivity and accessibility today with her all-ages, DIY event management and record label ‘Anti-Dismal’ – throwing sold out gigs in backyards, skateparks, community halls and houses”. This track from the new EP What Is And What Isn’t is such a full-on catchy track, but then the whole EP is great from the first single, DO YOU LIKE GIRLS to the end, you must listen to this, please?

Song Of The Week: Maybe This Time by Orville Peck. Such an abundance of talent this week, and yes, who hasn’t heard so many versions of this song? But this time it’s done by a gay man, Orville Peck, an American country singer, and all this baggage has produced, in my opinion, a beautiful new version.

Song Of The Week: Where love goes to hide by Star Departures (aka Adam Lloyd Davis) from Perth. Beautiful ballad from the album of the same name. The rest of the album is similarly low-key, and it explores the theme of ‘love that lingers in the shadows after a relationship ends, as well as the reflective process of heartbreak’. Well worth exploring the album.

Song Of The Week: This, Forever by Cry Club. This Melbourne duo made their debut in 2018, and had a great album, God I’m such a mess in 2020. They had some successes in Europe after that and have released a few singles in the last couple of years, and we should expect and album in early 2026. They see themselves as queer electro punk energy, but still remain very pop catchy.

Song Of The Week: ‘Be Honest’ by Junes Jones from the 5-track EP Would That It Were A Fortress. As far as I can tell June has been recording back to at least 2019 and her music is getting better, the songs more mature. I chose this song because it touched something in me. As it says, be honest.

Song Of The Week: No Aphrodisiac by Damien, a Queensland dance artist. It’s sometimes a little difficult to have a cover as single of the week, but as it is unlikely that this Whitlams original song is on the JOY playlist, I thought it was sufficiently good to be included here.
