She has Academy Award nominations for her performances in 21 Grams and The Impossible and starred in Birdman, which won the Oscar for Best Picture.     She joins me on the podcast today to talk about why she decided to share her own personal menopause experience, despite the risk of being shunned by Hollywood. So far her experience of sharing has only be positive and she uses her platform to amplify the voices of other women so that they don't feel alone and abandoned like she did.    We have a right old natter and it is a fun, uplifting conversation.    ___________________________________________________________   Do you want all your menopause resources in one place? Over the last 50 years, women have made extraordinary advances in athletics, accomplishing incredible feats and smashing long-held beliefs about the limits of their physical capabilities. And yet, the institutions of sport and science have largely ignored the needs of this growing population.     In UP TO SPEED: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes, sports and health journalist Christine Yu disentangles myth and gender bias from real science, making the case for new approaches that can help women athletes excel at every stage of life, from adolescence to adulthood, through pregnancy, menopause, and beyond. She explains the latest research and celebrates the researchers, athletes, and advocates pushing back against the status quo and proposing better solutions to improve the active and athletic lives of women and girls.    Talking about humans and their bodies within the context of sports and science is a tricky endeavor. Both disciplines rely heavily on binary categories that often conflate sex and gender and don't accurately describe the larger spectrum of sex or gender. Ultimately, the systemic injustices and assumptions embedded in sports and science don't just affect women and girls. They affect all people. By examining how women and girls are marginalized and excluded, we can start to uncover ways to make these systems more equitable for everyone.     ___________________________________________________________   Do you want all your menopause resources in one place? This episode is a ride, it is difficult to not enjoy the two amazing brothers Dr Spencer Nadolsky and Dr Karl Nadolsky. They are hilarious together and host their own podcast, Docs Who Lift, where they spend time distilling the complicated science into practical morsels that we can all benefit from. We spend a lot of time during this episode myth busting, dropping knowledge bombs and laughing...a lot.  Enjoy!    In their own podcast, Drs. Spencer and Karl Nadolsky talk about nutrition, medicine, and fitness through the lens of two physicians who lift weights. Both doctors are former NCAA division 1 wrestlers who have gone into medicine. Dr. Spencer Nadolsky is a board certified family physician specialized in obesity medicine and lipidology. Dr. Karl Nadolsky is a board certified endocrinologist also specialized in obesity medicine.    https://open.spotify.com/show/2umc46jxx2i4qyjY0MRbDJ  ___________________________________________________________   Do you want all your menopause resources in one place? This is a must listen to podcast that shows what true grit looks like – so very incredible. Enjoy!!   Meet is Lesley Patterson who won a BAFTA on Sunday for best adapted screenplay but the BBC cut her acceptance speech from the programme . They found time for inane interviews backstage, but not the story of how a 3 x World Champion Triathlete became a BAFTA winning scriptwriter.   Let's start the story after her retiring as an elite sportswoman when she was asked " What's next " she replied " I am going to move half way across the world from my home here in Scotland  become a scriptwriter and win an Oscar .   That was more than 16 years ago when she landed in LA and set out to make a new version of the silent movie ' All Quiet On Thé Western Front' .She bought the rights from the estate of the writer who wrote the best selling book that was made into an Oscar winning film. Over the course of 16 years she pitched the idea to anyone who would listen , listen they did but no one was interested in a German language film about World War 1 , without a famous actor being involved.    She used all he savings and remortgaged her house to keep her dream alive , but the dream was about to become a nightmare when she was told raise $10,000 or lose the rights to the film. She was turned down by everyone she tried to borrow from, but fate played it's hand . There was a triathlon taking place with $10,000 prize money .  Exactly the amount she needed , she entered and began training. The day before the race she fell from her bike and broke her shoulder. She was down but she was not out, she strapped up , cycled, ran and swam a mile using just her legs and one arm .    She WON the race, the film as we know was made with money from Netflix, and now she has won a BAFTA and was awarded multiply Oscars!   So if you didn't know this story, you do now!"    https://braveheartcoach.com/  ___________________________________________________________   Do you want all your menopause resources in one place? By age 40 we should know about the menopause transition — when it starts and what happens in our bodies. Women Living Better empowers those on the path to menopause through knowledge and collective experience. But most women don't and Nina Coslov decided to do something about that.    What started as a "what the heck is going on in my body", to providing women with clear information about menopause, soon turned into research, as Nina knew there were woeful gaps. In 2020 Nina, Dr. Woods and Dr. Richardson conducted the WLB Survey focusing on better characterizing the experience of the path to menopause, beginning while periods are still coming monthly. As a team, this energetic trio has published six papers in peer-reviewed journals and is working on more.    Nina was honored with the North American Menopause Society's Media Award in 2021.    Nina truly believes (as do I) that by our late thirties, we will receive anticipatory guidance about what to expect on the path to menopause.   Head over to the Women Living Better for more information and to take their polls!    https://womenlivingbetter.org/  ___________________________________________________________   Do you want all your menopause resources in one place? Deborah Chambers, better known as Deborah Darling, is a 61-year-old silver model and social media influencer based in Pretoria, South Africa.     She started modelling as a side-hustle in her mid-fifties while working full-time as a technical writer for an IT company. Dr. Maki is best known for her contributions to the field of menopause and cognition. A central focus of her research has been the effects of hormone therapy (HT) and alternative treatments for menopausal symptoms on cognition.    Professor Pauline Maki, co-author of the IMS White Paper, said: "Patients with cognitive complaints at menopause are often concerned about their risk of dementia later in life and it's important to let them know that memory problems are common during the menopause transition and the large majority of women will not develop dementia"    In the show today we discuss:  What do we mean by cognitive function and brain fog?   How does cognitive function change in menopause?  What menopause-related factors appear to influence cognition? What role does MHT play?   What other modifiable risk factors influence cognition at midlife? Can we discuss girls/women's education and how that impacts dementia risk?   Cultural differences    You can read the WHITE PAPER – Brain Fog in Menopause here  https://www.imsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMS-White-Paper-2022-Brain-fog-in-menopause.pdf    ___________________________________________________________   Do you want all your menopause resources in one place? For American women today, working out is as accepted as it is expected, fueling a multibillion-dollar industry. But it wasn't always this way. For much of the 20th century, sweating was considered unladylike, and girls grew up believing physical exertion would cause their uterus to literally fall out. Danielle's book, digs deep into the history of women's fitness and how it has evolved from a beauty tool promoted to "reduce" towards a path of promoting mental, emotional and physical well-being. Imagine finding out in your teenage years that you are menopausal? It would be utterly devastating, even getting that same diagnosis in your 20's or 30's - we consider menopause to be associated with midlife or older. POI and early menopause are more common than you think, and Dr Hannah Short & Dr Mandy Leonhardt have made it their mission to provide as much helpful, evidence-based information as possible for women in this category. The co-authors of the new book, The Complete Guide to POI & Early Menopause, is a must-read and quite frankly a brilliant resource. ___________________________________________________________ Do you want all your menopause resources in one place?
