Description

Deathwatch is a monthly podcast which goes into production anytime one of the “greats” from the history of film, television, or other pop culture dies. Matt Brown and Matt Price will convene, each having watched one work from the deceased person's canon that they had not previously seen. They will then place those works in the context of the career as a whole, offering facts and wisdom and occasional bon-mots, in a roughly half-hour audio show, to be posted on the final Friday of every month.

THE MOVIES (1895-2020)

2020-04-03--:--

For the final episode of Deathwatch, we look at the final nail in the coffin of mainstream moviegoing, and how the movies as a popular art form are about to die, transform, and be reborn.
BUCK HENRY (1930-2020)

BUCK HENRY (1930-2020)

2020-02-2846:20

Buck Henry wrote The Graduate, hosted Saturday Night Live, co-directed with Warren Beatty, and never took his pyjamas off. We discuss his career by way of Heaven Can Wait and Town & Country. Plus, a surprising announcement about the future of death, and Deathwatch.
SYD MEAD (1933-2019)

SYD MEAD (1933-2019)

Futurist Syd Mead showed the whole world what 2019 would look like way back in 1982 and then, weirdly enough, ended up dying in 2019. I smell a conspiracy. Meantime, Matthew Price gives us the longest Roll Call of all time. Listen in!
Beloved character actor, voice actor, Star Trek mainstay and all around nice guy Rene Auberjonois passed away earlier this month at the age of 79. We look at Images and Eyes of Laura Mars by way of getting at the shape of this guy’s career.
Robert Forster, a genius character beloved by just about everyone who saw him in anything, passed away in October as we were preparing to record our previous episode. Today Matt Brown looks at his 1969 breakout film, Medium Cool, while Matt Price reviews Alligator. Plus, our longest Roll Call ever!
Groundbreaking actress, singer, and activist Diahann Carroll died at the beginning of this month at the age of 84, and we’re here to talk about some of her work: Carmen Jones (1954), Hurry Sundown (1967), Claudine (1974) and — of course — The Star Wars Holiday Special.
Rutger Hauer was a wild actor with a widely diverse array of roles — some of them all-time great (Blade Runner!), some of them…. not so much. We look at Nighthawks and Flesh + Blood as ways of getting at this weird cat.
Author Toni Morrison leaves a huge shadow behind her as she leaves this world and moves on to the next — and we are ill-equipped to discuss. We give it a crack, though, with talk about Beloved and Tar Baby.
RIP TORN (1931-2019)

RIP TORN (1931-2019)

2019-07-2637:38

Or as we like to say on the podcast, RIP Rip. We look at two wildly different films from the great character actor’s legacy: Coming Apart (1969) and Extreme Prejudice (1987).
This month, death takes a holiday — so we return to an honouree from earlier in the year, B-movie director Larry Cohen, with discussion of his films Black Caesar and God Told Me To.
