On September 27th, 2016 Deputy Chief Michael Fahy of the NYC Fire Department tragically lost his life in the line of duty.  Since then the FDNY has held an annual memorial run to honor Chief Fahy and to raise money for the FDNY Foundation.  This year’s event will be held virtually and all proceeds will go toward FDNY families most effected by the Covid-19 pandemic.   Today we speak with Race Director of the #4forFahy, Firefighter Shane Clarke, and President of the FDNY Run Club, Captain Denis Sweeney, about the legacy of Chief Fahy, the history of memorial events in the FDNY and how you can help raise money for first responders suffering most from Covid-19.   Register for the race by donating $10 (suggested) to the FDNY Foundation. 4 for Fahy 4 Mile Run FDNY Foundation
Coronavirus has NYC on lockdown. We sat down with NYC Parks Department Commissioner Mitchell Silver to discuss the ways in which residents can and cannot use the parks. We also discuss Mr. Silver’s love of running and the ways in which the pandemic could affect the NYC Marathon later this year. Special Thanks to Allison Goldstein.
When we first spoke with Allison two years ago she was filled with doubt, but willing to state flatly, “I want to qualify for the Olympic Trials”.  Now, on the eve of the Olympic Trials Marathon, Allison reflects on the long and windy road as she readies herself for the race of her life.
In what ways can CrossFit help your running? In what ways can running help your CrossFit? In our inaugural episode of 2020 we speak with owner and head programmer of Crossfit Island Park, Rob Moloney. He gives us his unique perspective on the physiology behind high intensity interval training and how it can benefit you.

Eric Gelber: 200 Miles

2019-07-1640:39

After helplessly watching his friend, Anita, pass away from Multiple Myeloma (a form of blood cancer), Eric Gelber decided to do something about it. He has raised more than $1.3 million for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation by running numerous ultra-marathons around the country. In 2016 Eric completed his most epic adventure by running 200 miles around NYC’s Central Park. Eric and I discuss his relationship with the MMRF, the “200 Mile” documentary, and how he finds the strength to keep moving forward. Joe DiNoto and David Trimble are the race directors, hosts, and one might even say choreographers of the Midnight Half. This alleycat-style unsanctioned event on the streets of NYC is the talk of the running world. We speak with Joe and Dave about the race’s execution, its relationship to the Red Hook Crit, and how these two are at the forefront of a new sport: Urban Running. Tim Snow, like Bill Murray, is beloved by pretty much everyone. And, like Bill Murray, he is truly a master of his craft. Tim has spent the last 20+ years in the sport of triathlon perfecting what it means to be a coach. He raced professionally for 13 years at a time when not much was known about the Ironman. After a decade of trial, error and engineering he and QT2 Systems founder, Jesse Kropelnicki, put together the most comprehensive coaching protocol in the sport. Listen, laugh and LEARN as Tim explains his experience with, running, triathlon, nutrition and everything in between. In this essay “Such as we are made of”, Sarah delves deep into the struggles she has dealt with, both physically and mentally, in being a professional runner.  Sometimes you see your personal bests just slip away and sometimes they won’t come back for quite a while.  Sarah was in that position earlier this year where she hadn’t run a personal record in a very long time.  So she wrote this.  It’s basically a letter from past Sarah to future Sarah telling herself everything is going to be ok.  It takes a certain kind of person to get through it and it takes a certain kind of person to keep pushing toward that finish line.  And Sarah did just that.  In October of 2018 Sarah finished top American in a staggering time of 2:32 at the Chicago Marathon.  We here at the show are very proud of her and we wish her continued success.   Sarah is a 361 USA sponsored athlete and a contributor to the Personal Record Podcast.    Visit Sarah on her website. Joe DiNoto is the pioneer behind the latest craze in NYC running: unsanctioned racing.  These dangerous events through the streets of New York capture the imagination of runners around the world as some of NYC’s most elite athletes bob and weave through traffic hoping to be the first across the finish line.  Joe, the founder of Orchard Street Runners, explains why racing in general and unsanctioned racing in particular taps into one of the most fundamental aspects of being human.  Check out Personal Record on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and our website.  Email us with any questions, comments or concerns. Justin Wood and I have run the TCS NYC Marathon a combined 9 times.  In this special episode, we break the race down into its most fundamental components.  We discuss race-day logistics as well as execution.  We answer common questions regarding the mysteries behind tapering and the infamous carbo-load.  Whether you're running this race for the 1st time or the 100th, you’ll come away from this episode with a plan to get from your bed to the finish line on November 4th. Justin Wood is an RRCA Level 1 certified running coach and the Founder and Head Coach of Justin's Joggers, a NYC based running team.   Check out Personal Record on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and our website.  Email us with any questions, comments or concerns.
