Kenneth Grant, stylist to the stars, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Jennifer Holiday, and Yolanda Adams: • You have to be a people person, this must be a calling• You are a problem solver• All you need is 5 consistent people that come to you and are willing to tell their friends and family about what you do for them to spread the word• 4 Factors of Giving Good Service• Balance, this business has ups and downs, prepare and save when things are good because surely there will be slow times. • Push yourself out of your comfort zone, learn, and educate yourself• Leadership, you are a leader helping show your client where they need to go and what they need to do• When they see that you truly want the best for them, they will trust you• People want attention, even difficult ones want to be treated well• Purpose - do it more than just for you, genuinely want to make them look better• Give back when you can if someone really needs you but can't afford it• You are not for everybody, and everybody is not for you, be willing to let a bad match client go somewhere else• You must maintain a positive work environment because you work such long hours• When you come to work, be ready to work and look like you are ready to work. How can you expect someone to want you to do their hair when yours is not done well.
• You must know "Why" you are doing hair - a calling, your purpose as opposed to doing it for money which will make it frustrating• Be authentic - no point in trying to put on a facade in order to get business because you can't sustain it forever• Be There - if you're open for business then you must be in your salon when people are looking for you. Many benefits to being available.• Environment - Salon must be clean and reflect the atmosphere you want to project otherwise you will lose clients. • Customer Experience - go out of your way to make it a wonderful experience for your clients, it's more than a hair-do, it's an experience that you are providing• Everybody is Not Your Client - if your personality does not jive with the client, then don't take them on even if you need the money. It's not worth the energy drain and frustration.  Guest Speaker - Linda Franks from Beauty by Design
