Spring Pledge Drive is upon us so Dan and Hank begin to explore alternative sources of income in case the drive doesn't go well for them. PLUS it's almost BikeRides 500th show, so get ready from a bunch of "500" related deep bike tracks. Included: Jimmie Rogers, Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash, John Denver, Willie Nelson, Stuck with Green, Against Me, Stevie Wonder, Sleeping at Last and some healthy lifestyle advice from John Wayne, and the Flintstones.
The whole ride this week is dedicated to the music of MOWER COUNTY HOME GROWN MUSIC FEST at the Historic Paramount Theater in Austin This Saturday. Part Time Ex's, Prairie Clamor, Six Mile Grove, Whalen and the Willows and Charlie Freaking Parr, each get at least two tracks today as they prepare to rock Austin this weekend like only the locals can!
Magnolia Electric Company bookends the show this week with chapters from Red Rockers, Velvet Underground, Nico, Iris Dement, Kitten Forever and a snippet or two from Elmo making up the rest of your afternoon read.. I mean RIDE.
A spring theme leads to a slew of tracks on this week's ride that have never been played before on the show. The Flaming Lips, Billie Holiday, Carly Simon, Simon and Garfunkel, The Captain and Tennille and much more included.
Dan makes a Bob Dylan bread sandwich for your lunch on the ride today. The meat: Katy Kirby, Twain, Caroline Rose, Tom Waits, Crystal Gayle and Twain (NOT Shania - you're welcome). Careful eating and riding, it makes it difficult to text!
Austin Texas America artist Mary Gauthier played on the MSU campus this week so we bookend the show with two of our favorite classic MG tracks plus a BIG SURPRISE from Mary herself at the end of the ride. Magnolia Electric Company, Don McLean, new Charlie Parr, The Pretenders, Allison Russell, Sonny Bill Glover and The Hold Steady make up the heart of your afternoon bike ride sandwich.
Hope ya like the Felice Brothers, if not come back next time but some of us want to hear raw, slow rolling, acoustic folk/blues now and then and IANTOWN, the Felice's first and never released 2006 album, is just what the bike doctor ordered.
It's a purging of hard feelings on the ride this week as Dan lays down a whole show of angry songs. Helen MckCookerybook (yep), Elton John, Pink Floyd, John Mellencamp, Jackson Brown, Charlie Parr, The Gear Daddies, Queen and Van-the-angriest-man-man-I-know Morrison all included.
A TALKING HEADS Day sponsor inspires this THs' sandwich bookending the ride, with some interesting and poignant messages in the songs making up the meat and cheese. Now Serving: Kerry Lash, Purple Mountain, Barclay James Harvest, Allison Russell, Elizabeth Cotton and NFL MVP, Taylor Swift (you read that right).
Dan processes a recent traumatic experience with the riders and listeners and follows the story up with related songs. Included: Tom Waits, SarahMcLachlan, Ninah Washington, Charlie Parr, Phil Collins, Pink Floyd, Status Quo, The Talking Heads and an unnerving cut from the score of Damien Omen 2, a movie that made The Exorcist look like Saturday morning cartoons.
Hank drops by for a ride this week to share some diverse song sets as he and Dan make the ride mostly about the music this week. Included: Neko Case, Nathanial Rateliff, Silver Jews, Mazzy Star, Arrogant Worms (ahhhh, what?!) Charlie Parr and more. Did we mention diverse?
For sure: Across all genres/eras there have been an abundance of songs recorded about being alone, and we're going to play 14 of them for you today. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Charley Crockett, Robert Finely, Kim Karnes and Norah Jones are just a few of the amazing and diverse artists expressing their tendencies toward solitude through song on this week's ride.
Donovan, Chris Kerrigan, Future Teens, John Prine, The Zombies, Jolina Carl, Warren Haynes, Derivakat, Otis Redding, Tom Waits, Michael Martin Murphy and Andrew Bird make up this year's New Year's ride..
Hank joins Dan for the annual Christmas ride. Sea Flats, Nick Lowe, Jimmy Buffet, Belle & Sebastian, Michael Martin Murphy, The Cure and the Coffee Hag Choir all make up this variety of "Christmas" mention at a minimum, or even some all out Christmas songs in some cases, holiday special.
Dan tempts fate when he calls winter out for being a chicken $h1t in December, then they make-up when he plays a full show of 'Winter' songs. Included: Be Your Own Pet, Of Monsters and Men, The Head & The Heart, Bright Eyes, Vashti Bunyan, a couple winter bike riding stories and much more.
It's a "December" solo ride featuring The Grey Boy Allstars, Counting Crows Feet, Mazzy North Star, Willie Won't Go Nelson, Merle X-con Haggard, Eddi Brickell & the New Bo He's, George Winston Cigarettes, July London Fog, Norah Mr.Jones, Kate leaving-it-alone Bush, and the Four Pork Chop Seasonings.
Take a soul melting ride on the coldest night of the winter with friends of the show Charlie Parr and Erik Koskinen, live, in studio, for some collaborative musical magic and more. This nearly 2 hour web version contains tons of extra dialogue not heard on the radio, and that always seems to be where the best stories emulate and incubate from. It's a special ride like no other, don't miss this one!
It's a special musical salute to Hank's grandson, Braylon (Captain Ron) and his passion for ships and boats. Included: Pete Seger, Tom Waits, Al Stewart, Bryan Ferry and of course the big freighter standard from old gray whiskers and heavy winter sweater wearing, Canadian Folk God himself, Gordon Lightfoot and the wreck of the EFG.
Dan's Mom posthumously co-hosts the Bike Rides Radio Show (yes, you read that correctly)
Dan guest hosts KMSU's Folk Scene Etc. program in honor of late host Bruce Davis; whom we recently lost to cancer. This is a two hour program that delves deep into Bruce's own material as a key contributor to many Folk bands over the decades, and the musical youtube posts created over the last year of his life..Every Bruce Davis/Folk Music friend or fan should enjoy this therapeutic presentation.
