"Do you dream of sailing around the world in a sailboat?
Do you have a business or career you don't want to sacrifice for that dream?
Do you have kids in school?
You don't need to quit your job, sell your house, and take the kids out of school to complete a circumnavigation of the globe in a sailboat. You don’t have to wait until you are retired to sail for the South Pacific. This book tells you how you can do it without uprooting your life by taking as little as two months per year off to sail the trade winds.
Circumnavigating the globe in a sailboat is on par with scaling Mount Everest in terms of its rarity. Many potential circumnavigators are hobbled by misconceptions about the journey that mountaineers lack when climbing to the top of the world.
It is said, “I want to circumnavigate to see the world.” Nevertheless, successful trade wind circumnavigators don’t see the world. Instead, they travel on a narrow ribbon around it stopping mostly at a narrow range of countries that are downwind. Lack of focus causes many more failed circumnavigations than storms at sea.
The conventional wisdom is that you need to quit your job, sell your house, and live on the boat year-round. The reality is that even retirees circumnavigating full-time keep their boat in port half of the year because of the demands of cyclone season. There is no good way to elude the November to April cyclone season that dominates 60 percent of the trade-wind circumnavigation route.
The mad rush from the eastern Caribbean to the “safe” ports in New Zealand and Australia in a single calendar year is misguided. It sets cruisers up for hard, upwind ocean passages in future years and saps the resolve of their crews. A better solution is to haul out their boats in the South Pacific and fly back to their homes in the developed world during the cyclone season.
It makes more sense to keep one’s job and home and take annual two-to-six month leaves of absences to move the boat forward during the cruising season. This allows the sailors to earn more outside the cruising season. Further, they can maintain the careers and businesses which they have built over many years. Further, cruisers still have a job or business to come back to if they decide that the cruise is not for them. Pursuing a part-time circumnavigation is likely to be far less costly to cruisers’ long-term earnings than totally severing ties to one’s job or business.
Going back to their homes on land is much more comfortable than living aboard, while waiting for cyclone season to pass. The most modest land-based accommodations are typically more comfortable than the most luxurious sailboat in port. Finally, part-time circumnavigations avoid many problems with educating school age children and obtaining necessary parts.

I wanted to rescue my stranded sailboat in New Caledonia. Falling victim to a COVID-19 visa scam I circumnavigated the globe in 3 expensive days on the fake promises of the New Caledonia government, the airline AirCalin, a greedy official quarantine Hotel Godwana, and my sailboat is still inaccessible. I have not been permitted to get back to my Island Packet sailing yacht since January 2020 because of COVID-19 border restrictions. I have been sailing around the world part-time since 2016 when I left my home port of New Orleans. I wrote this to the "quarantine hotel", Godwana in Noumea, which I never stepped foot in but they have $4,200 of my money: "Dear Marie-Françoise, Yellena et Kika: Thank you for your response on the Google review of the Godwana Hotel. It raises the suspicion that you are part of a quarantine visa fraud ring in Noumea, New Caledonia. I am reporting this to the US State Department and New Caledonia Government. An honest hotel would automatically refund all XFP 420,000 of my booking. You clearly are acting in a predatory manner, and had everything to gain from me not actually coming to your hotel. Indeed, AirCalin which denied my boarding gets to keep my plane ticket without actually flying me anywhere. I was lured to Tokyo Narita airport to AirCalin SB801 on May 7, 2021, with written permission by the New Caledonia government to enter and have a COVID-19 quarantine at my own expense. I was denied boarding by AirCalin for made up reasons and stranded in Tokyo after $3,600 of plane tickets and two days of flying and $4,200 of a pre-paid (COVID-19 jail) hotel stay. My PCR within 72-hours was negative, I was fully vaccinated with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, and I had no exposure or COVID-19 symptoms. I promptly notified you of my misfortune. You only responded after I wrote a Google review of your hotel. You said that that you refused to refund the XFP 420,000 which I pre-paid. Godwana’s official response is below and attached. You wrote on the Google Review on May 9, 2021 (USA time): “Notre prestation de quatorzaine n'est pas remboursable le jour j car la chambre est bloquée pour vous pour 15 jours. Nous comprenons votre désarroi mais vos propos diffamatoires ne nous incitent pas à vous venir en aide. Nous ne savons même pas pourquoi la police aux frontières françaises vous aurait bloqué en chemin ?” Which is translated: “Our fortnight service is not refundable on the day because the room is blocked for you for 15 days. We understand your distress, but your defamatory words do not encourage us to help you. We don't even know why the French border police would have blocked you on the way?” Your predatory billing practices should be investigated and your hotel should be expelled from any COVID-19 quarantine program. A hotel not involved in visa fraud would just refund my money. Unfortunately, the Godwana Hotel has very much resisted that. I think a criminal fraud and conspiracy probe should be opened by the New Caledonia police. Linus Wilson talks about season 4 of his part-time around the world trip where he sails his 31-foot Island Packet from Vava'u, Tonga to Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji. John Martin III sailed across the frigid Bering Sea in a 8-foot Walker Bay sailing dinghy. He landed in Siberia after 14 days at sea when wild currents pushed him wildly off course. He planned to sneak into China after sailing down the Yukon River. First he sailed the Tanana River. He departed his native Anchorage, Alaska in the tiny rowing sailboat. He worked his way up the rivers to the Yukon before departing for his wife and son in China. Martin lacked a passport because of his past brushes with the law. He was forced to land in Siberia to avoid being sucked into the Arctic Ocean. After a dangerous beach landing in Lavrentiya in the remote Chukotka region of Russia on August 1, 2018, after 14 days he was detained by Russian authorities for several months before being deported back to his native Alaska. Did low oil pressure cause the Viking Sky to nearly sink? The Norwegian Maratime Authority (NWA) has issued their findings on why the 2-year old, 749-foot Viking Sky cruise ship lost all diesel engine power on Saturday, March 23, 2019. The engine oil pressure got too low due to up to 26-foot seas on the rocky southern Norway coast. Only anchors hastily deployed saved the 1,379 people onboard from abandoning a sinking ship hundreds of meters from the rocks. 479 people were airlifted off the boat.
1,373 lives were in the balance on the 749-foot cruise ship Viking Sky. After losing all its engines on March 23, 2019, signalling a "Mayday" distress call, and anchoring off a lee shore in 6-to-8-meter waves and gale force conditions, several engines were working on March 24, 2019. The Viking Sky launched in 2017.
The MV Hagland Captain a 300-foot cargo ship had to be abandoned by all 9 crew due to engine failure. The rescue of the Hagland Captain crew by helicopter delayed the air lift of the guests of the MV Viking Sky.
Over half of its 915 passengers were air lifted by CHC Helicopters and the Southern Norway rescue services (Hovedrningssentralen) on March 23 ,to March 24. MV Viking Sky arrived in Molde, Norway at 16:30, on Sunday, March 24, 2019.
Istvan Kopar went from last (13th place) to 4th place from day 27 to day 263 of the 2018 Golden Globe Race. The Hungarian-American solo sailor battled broken steering, busted windvanes, lost log lines, broken radios, and peeling fingernails to best 14 other competitors at the start of the the 2018 Golden Globe Race (GGR). The GGR 2018 is a retro race that bans the use of satellite phones and GPS navigation. Kopar got a 24-hour time penalty added to his 263 days at sea because of an unsanctioned stop and sat phone use. All the first four finishers of the sailboat race for full-keel yachts of 32-to-36 feet long have been penalized for breaking the retro rules of the yacht race.

USS Ashland (LSD 48) renders assistance to two distressed American mariners in the Pacific ocean, Oct. 25, whose sailboat had strayed well of its original course. Ashland was operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region on routine deployment when the received the message to help.

Find out how JLVDH did it from the start to finish of the toughest race in sailing, the GGR2018. Eighteen sailors got to the start line, but only five remained by day 212 of the fiftieth anniversary GGR 2018. Van Den Heede led most of the way as Are Wiig, Abhilash Tomy, Gregor McGucken, Loic Lepage, and Susie Goodall's sailboats were dismasted. This retro race for 32-to-36-foot sailboats runs through the stormy Southern Ocean and even Van Den Heede could not escape unscathed. His boat was pitchpoled a few thousand miles from Cape Horn and he contemplated dropping out. His shrouds were damaged endangering his mast. Vandenheede was able to enact a repair and sailed on more slowly allowing Dutch sailor Mark Slats to almost catch him south of the Azores High. A tactical misstep of motoring though the center of the high instead of sailing more quickly to its west cost Slats any chance of taking the lead short of disaster as Van Den Heede stretched his lead to over 400 nm. This video features commentary from Sunday Time's 1968 race winner English sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who was the only finisher of the original race in 312 days. Van Den Heede says he was inspired by his contemporary sailor Bernard Moitessier. Jean-Luc Van Den Head was the oldest entrant in the 2018 GGR. The race is his 6th circumnavigation of the Globe. Besides holding the GGR race record Van Den Heed still holds the record for the fastest east to west solo-circumnavigation of the globe. His 36-foot Rustler yacht is named Matmut after his main sponsor.

Mabel Stock, her brother Ralph, and their friend buy a 47-foot, gaff-rigged sailboat after World War I and from 1919 to 1920 sail it half-way across the world. They are one of the first cruising yachts to transit the Panama Canal in the Ogre sailboat. They go on to sail the South Pacific. This is one of the earliest accounts of a sailing yacht cruise authored by a woman. Mabel Stock joins the ranks of the Captain J. C. Voss and Joshua Slocum as an earlier pioneer of long-distance cruising in small sailing yachts. Mabel Stock and other crew sail from England to Spain, the Canary Islands, Barbados, Panama, the Galapagos, Nuku Hiva, Marquesas, Tahiti, Palmerston Atoll, and Nukualofa, Tonga.
Mabel M. Stock (b. 1874 d. 1941) was a world traveler, piano player, sailor, and single woman ahead of her time. She is the older sister and travel partner of the famous writer for books and films, Ralph Stock (b. 1881 d. 1962). This is her only book and was originally published in 1923. This is based on the 2019 Oxriver Publishing edition (c) 2019, Linus Wilson.

We hear from Alix Kreder and Stephan Denette who are wooden boat builders and the creators of the YouTube Channel Acorn to Arabella. After almost three years, these college buddies they have built the frame of their 38-foot gaff-rigged ketch made mostly of trees on Stephan's farm in western Massachusettes. They have almost no sailing experience, but they plan to sail the world whenever their wooden boat is finished in 2-to-10 years.
In addition, Linus Wilson releases tape of Susie Goodall's distress call with Slow Boat Sailing Podcast episode 19 guest GGR 2018 founder Don McIntyre. The youngest Golden Globe Race 2018 entrant, and only woman, was pitchpoled 2,000 miles west northwest of Cape Horn in the southern Pacific Ocean. She was ultimately rescued be an 190-meter cargo ship.

Legendary sailor Captain J. C. Voss meets a mysterious man in his hotel in Victoria, British Columbia in 1897. The mystery man says he knows where tons of gold and jewels are buried on the remote Cocos Island. Voss takes a 35-foot sailing sloop seven thousand miles through gales in search of the pirate Treasure of Lima worth seven thousand pounds sterling in 1897 or over $200 million today.
*This is an edited, abridged, and annotated version of the first section of the Venturesome Voyages of Captain Voss concerning the voyage of the XORA sloop. This is the only part of that work focused on treasure hunting.

"My seafaring life commenced in the year 1877, when I was quite a young man. Up to the time that I sailed in the Xora, it was spent in large sailing vessels. During this period, I have filled all sorts of positions from deck boy up to master.
Throughout all those years, I would certainly not have believed that a vessel so small as the Xora could live through a heavy gale at sea. Naturally enough, I should not have thought of attempting a long sea voyage in any small craft if it not been for a gentleman, whose name was George Haffner, an American citizen.
In the summer of 1897, when I was sitting comfortably in an easy chair in the Queen's Hotel, Victoria, British Columbia, a gentleman stepped up to me, saying, “Are you Captain Voss?” I replied in the affirmative. He then introduced himself as Mr. Haffner, handing me at the same time a letter, saying that it was from an old friend of mine, whose death had taken place at sea just fourteen days previously, and with whom he had stayed during his last moments."

Captain Voss is one of the early pioneers of long-distance sailboat cruising. He is the first major author in the genre of the sailing narrative write about his travels under sail after Captain Joshua Slocum. He is more famous for his 40,000-mile voyage in a sailing canoe named TILIKUM, but this treasure hunting adventure under sail is a book that will delight all readers.

Abstract
This study finds that YouTube channels crowdfunding on Patreon have more frequent video creation. The median YouTube channel that crowdfunded on Patreon produced a video every 7.5 days compared to 105 days for the median comparable channel that did not link to Patreon. Crowdfunders have more views per video, are more likely to link to their Facebook pages, and uploaded videos more frequently. While two channels in the sample, each earned over $150,000 in 2016 from Patreon, the typical crowdfunding sailing channel earned $73 per video, per month, or creation. It appears that a little bit of money was associated with a big increase in new video production.

Category 4, 155 mph, Hurricane Micheal made landfall on October 10, 2018, in Mexico Beach, Florida. It devastated the marinas, boats, and sailboats in Panama City, Florida. You'll see the rescue of the crew of the sailing vessel Old School abandoned in 8-foot seas near Boca Grande, Florida, as the yacht was experiencing the outer bands of a major hurricane.

Something happened that I never suspected. The blog surpassed the podcast this year in terms of views v. downloads. The blog at slowboatsailing.wordpress.com has 152K views with 234 posts. The Slow Boat Sailing Podcast has 118K downloads in 52 podcasts. The Slow Boat Sailing YouTube channel has 902K views from 100 public videos. I always expected the YouTube channel to have the greatest growth potential, but I never thought that blog could surpass the podcast. The blog was started as an afterthought, and its traffic was always low until the YouTube channel and thus the blog started focusing on news of interest to cruising sailors in September 2017.

Joy and Jim Carey were 150 miles from their home port in Bellingham Washington when they were struck by violent storm. A rogue wave filled their boat with water, knocked out the electronics, and nearly washed Jim overboard. Getting hypothermic with no other forms of communication, they pulled their EPIRB and abandoned their beloved sailing vessel Kelaerin. This tragic story has a happy ending. Listen to hear it.

Linus talks about the rescue of two Golden Globe Sailors rescued in the Indian Ocean. Abhilash Tomy was in 3rd place in the Golden Globe Race for small yachts on September 21, 2018, when his boat THURIYA was rolled and dismasted in 14-meter seas and 70-knot winds about 1,900 miles SW of Perth, Australia in the Southern Indian Ocean. Tomy had a sever back injury and could not move from his bunk. He set off his EPIRB manually, but was unable to cut away the dangerously dangling mast. This set off an international rescue of the French fisheries patrol vessel Osiris underway on September 24, 2018. 4th place competitor Irish skipper Gregor McGuckin was also rescued 30 miles west of Tomy by the Osiris. Hurricane Florence devastated the sailing community in New Bern, North Carolina with its ten-foot storm surge. You will see the destruction to boats in the historic city. You will see how the storm surge broke up the docks in Bridgepoint Marina and hear from a marina tenants Shawn and Shannon Yale of Sailing Banjo whose boat, SV Banjo, rode out the storm successfully on a Mantus Anchor.
Many boats were overturned in their stands from the rising storm surge in Duck Creek Marina near New Bern, NC. Barry Perrins sailed from England accross the Atlantic and beyond in his sailboat. He talks about his cruise of Portugal, Spain, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Curacao. He was anchored next to the creators of RAN Sailing in Curacao when he was interviewed.
Linus also talks about his second longest offshore passage (900 nm) from Aitutaki, Cook Islands to Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, Tonga. Linus passed up on Beveridge Reef and sailed into a cold front that stoped the Slow Boat's forward progress.The Raymarine and CPT Autopilots failed and the diesel engine got air in the lines and a broken bleed bolt knocked out the Yanmar diesel engine. That forced Linus to sail into anchor at Big Mama's Yacht Club in Tonga where Janna and Sophie will meet Linus in a few days.

This is part 2 of my discussion with John Glennie.
John Glennie's boat was adrift for 119 days upside-down before he and three other men landed on Great Barrier Island in New Zealand. This is the record for the most days adrift in a cold climate and is likely the record for the most days adrift by a sailing yacht crew. His boat the Rose-Noelle capsized in violent storm on the way to Fiji from the South Island of New Zealand. In this podcast, we hear the first 30 minutes of that over 2.5 hour conversation about the ordeal. It contains important lessons about survival at sea. In that long conversation, Glennie said he could not properly tell his story in his co-authored book The Spirit of the Rose Noelle because he was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) when it was being written. The 119 days at sea are the subject of the feature film Abandoned available on Amazon or Netflix.

Nikki Walsh and Tanner Broadwell bought at $5,000 1969 Columbia 28-foot sailboat to sail around the world. Their trip lasted 2 days. In the end the boat sunk to the bottom of the ocean. They departed Tarpon Springs, Florida. By 9PM on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, their boat was at the bottom of the sea. They were able to save their dog, a dinghy, and their IDs before abandoning ship to a SeaTow. See our video of this at

The boat lost its keel when they were motoring 2 miles per hour in the John’s channel off Tampa Bay, Florida. The boat filled with water within 10 minutes as water seeped up from the bottom of the boat and rested on the sea floor in 3-feet of water. The next day the boat turned on its side. Tanner said that someone is offering to give them a new boat, but they have started a $10,000 GoFundMe campaign to pay their salvage expenses and buy a new floating home. They estimate the salvage costs at $6,700 and they have no insurance. The 24-year old woman and 26-year old man lost their life savings. The link to that campaign is below:

The 49-year old boat had plenty of electronic and paper charts for the area. It only had a 6-horse power outboard for power, which worked until the boat sunk. It is somewhat common for old sailboats to have keel bolts give way and for the keel to fall off if they are not inspected regularly.
Nikki and Tanner learned to sail from Tanner’s dad and by sailing on friends’ boats. They bought SV Lagniappe in Fairhope, Alabama near mobile. Tanner and his Dad sailed the boat to Destin, Florida where Nikki sailed the boat to Panama City, Florida. From Panama City, Florida the three people and one dog sailed the 49-year old boat for 3 and a half days offshore to Tarpon Springs, Florida in June 2017. Nikki and Tanner spent $5,000 fixing up the boat until they departed for Key West, Florida in February. They spent one night at anchor before disaster struck and their beloved sailboat sunk, wrecked, and was a total loss. They used to live in Colorado before living aboard their sailboat in Tarpon Springs.
One lesson from this disaster and the wreck of the Tanda Malaika, whose captain Dan Govatos was a guest of the Slow Boat Sailing Podcast, is that entering an unfamiliar harbor at night is a bad idea. More cruisers should heed that rule of thumb.

On May 15, 2017, Lewis Bennett told US Coast Guard rescuers that his wife, Isabella Hellman, fell overboard while he slept in the 37-foot sailing catamaran on their honeymoon trip from St. Marteen to Key West. His boat sank 26-miles from Cay Sal Bahamas, and he evacuated into a life raft where the USCG rescued him. They also found rolls of silver coins. Mr. Bennett was convicted of illegally transporting stolen silver and gold coins. On February 20, 2018, the former newlywed husband, Lewis Bennett faced new charges of second degree murder in the death of his wife, Isabella Hellman, the mother of their daughter, a toddler named Emilia. The FBI alleges that Mr. Bennett a UK and Australian citizen scuttled his boat, Surf into Summer.

Linus finds a jungle of mold on the Slow Boat when he returns after 5 months. He goes to sea unprepared to avoid the bugs, mud, and torrential rains in Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. His sailboat lacks a sail and several things are not tied down as he flees the crowded anchorage of Tahauku Bay near Atuona. Linus has to transport the only potable water one liter at a time in a mad rush to flee the waterlogged French Polynesian island. He also replaces another battery because it became waterlogged. Simon Rumley directed the Crowhurst movie about Donald Crowhurst, who pretended to sail around the world in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. In that race roughly a dozen men competed for two prizes to be the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo and non-stop and the fastest man to sail solo non-stop around the world. He discusses the strange story of Donald Crowhurst who filed false position reports after he believed his boat was not seaworthy enough to sail around the world solo, non-stop in the Southern Ocean and around Cape Horn.
The Crowhurst movie is distributed by StudioCanal UK which is also distributing The Mercy (2018) starring Rachel Weisz and Colin Firth premiering in the UK on February 9, 2018. The Crowhurst Movie is likely to become available in March 2018 in the UK and later worldwide.

Donald Crowhurst was born near Delhi in British colonial India in 1932 to John and Alice Crowhurst. At the age of eight he was sent to an Indian boarding school where he would spend nine months of the year. Two years later, his parents moved to Western Pakistan. After the Second World War, aged fourteen, Donald was sent back to England to board at Loughborough College. His parents returned to England in 1947 when India gained Independence from Britain and the Partition took place. His father ploughed all of his retirement savings into an ill-fated business deal in the new territory of Pakistan. The Crowhurst’s life in post-war England was a far cry from colonial life. The lack of funds forced Donald to leave Loughborough College at the age of sixteen once he passed his School Certificate, and sadly John Crowhurst died in March 1948.
After starting as an apprentice in electronic engineering at the Royal Aircraft Establishment Technical College in Farnborough, Donald went on to join the RAF in 1953; he learned to fly and was commissioned. He enjoyed the life of a young officer and was described by many as charming, warm, wild, brave and a compulsive risk-taker who defied authority and possessed a madcap sense of humour. After he was asked to leave the RAF, he promptly enlisted in the army, was commissioned and took a course in electronic control equipment. He resigned from the army in 1956 and went on to carry out research work at Reading University aged twenty-four.
Crowhurst is remembered as being quite dashing and he caught the attention of his future wife Clare at a party in Reading in 1957. Clare was from Ireland and had been in England for 3 years. Apparently he told her that she would “marry an impossible man”. He said he would never leave her side and took her out the very next evening. Theirs was a romantic, whirlwind courtship that took place over the spring and summer of 1957. They married on 5th October and their first son, James was born the following year. It was at this time that Crowhurst began sailing seriously.
He secured a job with an electronics firm called Mullards but left after a year and aged twenty-six, he became Chief Design Engineer with another electronics company in Bridgwater, Somerset. His real dream was to invent his own electronic devices and he would spend hours of his spare time tinkering with wires and transistors creating gadgets. He also found solace in sailing his small, blue, 20-foot boat, Pot of Gold.
Crowhurst designed the Navicator, a radio direction-finding device for yachting and set up his company Electron Utilisation to manufacture and market the gadget. Donald and Clare’s family expanded with the arrival of Simon in 1960, Roger in 1961 and Rachel in 1962 and they lived happily in the Somerset countryside.
When Electron Utilisation hit financial difficulty, Crowhurst was introduced to Taunton businessman, Stanley Best, who agreed to back the company and Best eventually
sponsored Crowhurst’s attempt to circumnavigate the world in the trimaran Teignmouth Electron.
With the Empire gone, in 1960s Britain there developed a phenomenon where men sought adventure, recognition and heroism. Sending men to the moon was something Britain couldn’t afford, so instead, heroes came in the form of people like Francis Chichester who was the first person to tackle a single-handed circumnavigation of the world, starting and finishing in England with one stop in Sydney. Upon his return in 1967, Chichester was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and instantly became a national hero.
Capitalising on this wave of interest in individual round the world voyages, The Sunday Times sponsored the Golden Globe race, a non-stop, single-handed round the world yacht race. No qualifications were required for entrants but the rule was that they had to depart between 1st June and 31st October 1968 in order to pass through the Southern Ocean in summer. The trophy would be awarded to the first person to complete the race unassisted via the old clipper route, of the great Capes: Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn. The newspaper also offered a cash prize of £5000 for the fastest single-handed navigation.
Nine sailors started the race, four retired before leaving the Atlantic Ocean. Chay Blyth who had no previous sailing experience, retired after passing the Cape of Good Hope. Nigel Tetley was leading the race but sank with 1,100 nautical miles to go. Frenchman Bernard Moitessier rejected the commercial nature of the race, so abandoned it but continued sailing, completing the circumnavigation and carried on half way around the globe again.
Donald Crowhurst’s Teignmouth Electron was discovered mid-Atlantic, 1,800 miles from England at 7.50am on 10th July 1969 by the Royal Mail vessel, Picardy that was en route from London to the Caribbean. On inspection, the trimaran was deserted and a subsequent US Air Force search for Crowhurst followed to no avail.
British sailor Robin Knox-Johnston was the only entrant to complete the race. He was awarded both prizes and subsequently donated his £5000 prize money to Clare Crowhurst and the Crowhurst children.
Director James Marsh carried out painstaking research and delved deep into the heart and soul of what made Donald Crowhurst tick: “If I can speculate on Crowhurst’s background and his experience, he seemed to have a series of failures, if you like, and he escaped the failure by rolling the dice bigger on the next adventure. He was a man of enormous energy and charm and that energy and charm led him into decisions like the ones he made in joining the race, for example. He had enormous self-belief as well, and people around him substantiated that. He managed to fund and build that boat, so there’s a danger of overlooking what he achieved in this story as well as what he didn’t achieve. He achieved enormous amounts”.
“He was a fairly inexperienced sailor but he wasn’t as inexperienced as some people think he was. He hadn’t sailed the ocean properly, yet he built this very fast trimaran, but the boat wasn’t fully tested and finished. He made a pretty good go at sailing round the world – he stayed out in the ocean for the best part of seven months so all in all, he achieved much more than people ever thought he could, he just didn’t achieve what his objective was. It was a case of over-reach, it was hubris and that is what caused the tragedy of his demise”, concludes Marsh.
The research materials available on Crowhurst were “endless” says James Marsh, “there are quite a few books out there and great raw materials that he left behind, his logbooks, his diaries and letters he wrote to his wife”.
In the course of the research, Marsh also read a lot about psychology and about isolation, “You can read about what happens to prisoners who are on their own for six months and what that does to their minds. I made a documentary about a chimpanzee and he went mad within three days. There’s something about us as animals that are entirely social”.
Marsh found Crowhurst’s logbooks to be one of the most fascinating elements of research “because they’re the real thing when they’re not the real thing, he’s disguising the real thing. You can perceive the real story through the disguise”.
“I would drive around the country looking at locations listening to Crowhurst’s tapes” recalls Marsh, “He sings on the tapes, mostly sea shanties and he speculates about the state of the world, about politics, about his own life. It’s extraordinary really, some of that is a persona but some of it also is the truth. That’s the great joy of this kind of film – you get a chance to research and the more you know the more you want to know”.
The public persona Donald Crowhurst created through his tape recordings and the way he talks to his family and people on dry land were, according to James Marsh, “increasingly divorced from what he was feeling and experiencing. In our portrayal, he becomes primitive essentially. He’s stripped of civilisation and becomes much more elemental and that’s shown in his physicality, he loses weight, doesn’t wear as many clothes and starts to look like a vagabond on the boat. The mental journey is much more interesting than the physicality and we just had to bring that to the character”.
“There are entries in the logbooks and in the tape recordings that he became aware of the cosmic reality of where he was.” comments Marsh. “No-one behaved rationally after a certain point in that race. Moitessier lost his mind a bit too – he went round again! Robin Knox-Johnston was perhaps the exception but his boat was in a very strange state when he came back to the British coastline. All in all, no-one was spared by this journey”.
“The sea is like a desert. It’s also mercurial, it has moods, it changes, and it threatens you. But, all you’re seeing is a horizon and a sky. The sea changes colour, it can be stormy and it has this sort of personality that can destroy you,” muses Marsh. “The isolation is a huge part of what goes wrong in Crowhurst’s mind. Your brain chemistry changes when you don’t
