Get ready for an explosive and unfiltered look at life as a Black student at BYU! Sebastian takes us on a wild ride as he dishes about the viral rise of his "Black Menaces" group, a provocative movement that fearlessly called out racism within Mormon culture. From protests that sparked national headlines to tense confrontations with horrified church leaders like Brad Wilcox, Sebastian holds nothing back. He delves into the trauma of being constantly stared at and "othered" on BYU's overwhelmingly white campus, receiving vile racist abuse and death threats just for daring to speak truth to power. Sebastian's story is a raw, unsettling wake-up call about the insidious persistence of racism, even in religious communities that preach love and equality. Get ready to have your perceptions shattered by this bold revolutionary's refusal to stay silent in the face of oppression. What happens when a multiracial woman raised in a loving family that valued advocacy, positivity, and education joins the Mormon church? Summur's fascinating journey takes you from her NFL player father desegregating a team, to her mother fiercely protecting her from bullies and racism. Despite nurturing experiences at home, Summur faced harsh judgments and segregationist attitudes at church - a stark contrast that began shaping her doubts. Her path winds through BYU, an African American Studies class that unveiled new perspectives, and a traumatic racist cop incident, before working as a flight attendant and meeting her husband. With a unique multicultural lens, Summur shares the powerful family influences, eye-opening experiences, and pivotal moments like a young girl's innocent "Look mommy, a Lamanite" comment that led her to fundamentally question certain Mormon teachings and toxic cultures like purity culture. Prepare for an insightful, thought-provoking journey through the eyes of a Black Mormon woman. Episode Show Notes YouTube Link   Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors! David Bokovoy delves into Isaiah's significance in Mormon scripture, prophecy, and current events with an emphasis on understanding biblical prophets as social critics, not predictors of distant future events. We discuss scholarly debates on Isaiah's authorship and anachronistic references like brass plates, clarifying that the writings of Isaiah as known today did not exist in Isaiah's time. In a recent broadcast, one of the top female leaders of the Mormon church made the following statement, “There is no other religious organization in the world that I know of, that has so broadly given power and authority to women.” (J. Join us today for a panel discussion on this week's firestorm over J. Anette Dennis's sermon broadcast to women of the church, which was uploaded to the LDS Church's official Instagram account. Panelists include: Julia Sanders, Celeste Davis, Samantha Shelley, and Alyssa Witbeck. This riveting interview takes a deep dive into the church's recent Women's Devotional - an event intended to empower female members but one that generated significant controversy. Hear candid analysis unpacking the mixed messaging around their supposed "power and authority", and the perceived dissonance between leader's rhetoric and the reality of women's restricted roles. No topic is off-limits in this thought-provoking look at how the devotional aimed to honor women's divine roles while still upholding traditional male leadership.  Alyssa Witbeck - Tik Tok Alyssa Witbeck - Instagram Zelph on the Shelf - YouTube Zelph on the Shelf - Instagram Celeste M Davis Substack Celeste Davis - Instagram Episode Show Notes YouTube Link   Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors! Ever wonder what happens when a faithful Mormon Bible scholar has a crisis of faith and steps away from the religion he dedicated his life to? David Bokovoy's candid interview takes you on a riveting personal journey from staunch believer to "spiritual atheist." He pulls no punches in describing how the Church's controversial 2015 LGBTQ+ policy shattered his worldview, leading him to lose his testimony and leave Mormonism behind. With raw honesty and hard-won wisdom, he shares profound insights about the transformative power of education from his work in prison rehabilitation. He grapples with weighty questions of free will, authenticity, and human connection. You'll be captivated by his stories of finding the "Holy Ghost" outside of religion, confronting trauma through therapy, and continually evolving his understanding of truth. Brimming with thought-provoking perspectives on everything from ADHD to patriarchy to psychedelics, Bokovoy's interview is a must-see for anyone on their own journey of self-discovery beyond rigid belief systems. I just wanted to chime in about the comments about John having a "Mormon voice" because he's understanding and not loud or boisterous.. and yet I've regularly heard him read comments of listeners telling him to calm down or quiet down. I know this is not the subject of the episode but I can't help but notice that the advice to "shush" come from mostly or only female guests and listeners. Imagine if a man was to tell a woman host to water herself down a bit. Just be you, John. Don't tone it down.

While this episode was interesting, I realized early on how speedy Julia speaks and I couldn't help but me more fascinated and curious by that than anything else haha. Is her part being sped up to 1.75x speed by chance? Serious question. Great episode and research though.

This podcast episode is so much BS! That's coming from a Nigerian born African American Christian, living in Ca and a daughter-in-law of LDS followers. There's a whole lot of not calling a thing a thing going on (hint: LDS racism & people pleasing). And the revelation that the Nigerians was ignored for years but once the Nigerian-Biafran war broke out, it must have been a revelation which excuses the mormons from evangelizing the "lost" in Nigeria? Yeah whatever!😂🤨

Why is it unfortunate that anyone thinks conspiratorial , John? A conspiracy is simply two or more people plotting to deceive at least one other person. Another word for that is open-minded. Is that not why you parted ways with the LDS Church and why you embarked on a mission to expose their lies; their conspiracy to deceive?

The blood is on the heads of the leaders of the mormon church. They knew these extremists groups are thriving and they stay silent. Shame on them all. if there is a hell, they belong there.

I have had a completely different experience regarding the church and getting financial help. We live in Queen Creek, AZ and my wife broke her leg several years ago literally a week before our new insurance policies set in. We wracked up more than $10,000 in bills. We told the bishop, he made a phone call, and the next week he told us to send him bills totally $5,000. Those were promptly paid without any fuss whatsoever.

I have to say thar I was so impressed with this bishop and the way this episode was handled. It always sounds so mind-blowing when you hear this out loud. I live in Draper Utah and needed assistance when my husband lost his job. The church makes it extremely difficult to get assistance. Also, our area implemented the self-reliance program, and it is very humiliated and dehumanizing to ask for assistance. Last year, I was in an auxiliary presidency and attended a training on self-reliance. I wanted to vomit. In one of the most affluent areas in Utah. So I am so proud of this bishop for speaking out.

I listened to both episodes, and I’m glad they are happy together, but man - so much hurt and pain caused by these two, and not a lot of remorse (or at least it didn’t seem that way to me). Unfortunately I think they both come off a little narcissistic. Just the fact that he worked his feelings out with Elizabeth between the two of them, before approaching his wife. He should have come to HER with those feelings from the beginning. Instead he had the security of having processed it, lived with it, and having made the decision all before including his wife in the process. Really sad and obviously shows the lack of togetherness there. And when you asked what he wanted to say to his kids, it was all “me, me, me” and no sorry, and seemingly no understanding for what his actions put them through. Likewise, Elizabeth seems to be only worried about how everything has affected her. She’s still dealing with the outcome of her decision to lie to his ex wife. The statement was clear that she hurt

Hey John! I love your show, just wanted to say I found your statements about sex addiction a bit dangerous for the uninformed. sex addiction can mirror Kelly's story, or it can be dramatic like sex with multiple partners in a day, or it can be committed monogamous sex in marriage. Sex addiction is about compulsion, coping, shame, and overall mindset. A wife could have sex with her husband and it could seem spontaneous and fun, but could actually be compulsion and shame. A man could be having sex with multiple partners and it could be addiction, but it could also be self esteem or something completely outside of addiction. There are people listening to your podcast who probably heard you calling out sex addiction as needing to masturbate constantly, or having to go into a strip club if you drive by, or having sex with multiple people in a day - and because that's where you set the bar - they will find it easy to say "I'm not that bad, maybe I don't have a problem" when they need real and
